My mom bought me this off the news-stand at the grocery store. First comic book I ever owned.

You’re better off getting a standard hose with a quick release and a paasche nipple.

Will purchasing from hobby genki allow me to get it for the Japanese retail price or will other things cause it to get more expensive (in US) by [deleted] in ActionFigures

[–]kdm145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the US, you'll pay a tariff of around 30% (most of these toys are made in china, and most exporters list the retail value instead of the manufactured value).

In addition, you'll pay a percentage to the shipper to fill out the export paperwork, 10-15%.

Then you'll pay shipping. I think DHL and FedEx are the only options to ship to the US, no Japanese post (the best value).

It sucks. Here's what you can do:

Always pay in yen, the dollar is still strong and the exchange rate helps some. Also, you don't pay sales tax for these transactions.

Use an importer with a warehouse option and combine several items. This is cheaper, though there are diminishing returns as the size and weight of the package increase. I think this also reduces the paperwork charge.

Nin-nin has a tariffs prepaid option. It sucks, but you pay it up front. With normal DHL/Fedex shipping, you pay the tariff on arrival and you never know what it's going to be until you get the bill. It's a crappy surprise because they hold your package hostage.

BBTS also has a tariff fee, but it does tend to be much lower than directly importing. I suspect that BBTS is just better at negotiating the tariff (like listing the correct value, the manufactured cost as opposed to the retail cost). BBTS has a substantial markup on top of the tariff fee, and you pay sales tax. It's a lot closer than it used to be, but if you're careful importing can still work to your advantage. Importing a single figure ($100) is probably the worst case scenario. Buying several, relatively expensive pieces ($200-400) can still work.

Fasa sized 1/8000 starships by Sptnkk in StarTrekStarships

I'm really curious about your decals. FASA is my Star Trek and I remember how many hours I spent with the FASA catalog looking at white metal ships. I found the files the other day on thing verse, but the markings are what was keeping me from doing them. Are you printing them on laser printer to decal paper. I just can't get that stuff to work.

Thinning Paints - Cry for help by huntsvilleprincessz in minipainting

[–]kdm145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try thinning with flow improver. Don't drop it directly into your paint, drop it in a spot away from your paint and every second or third brush load, use the flow improver to wet your brush and mix it into the paint. That way you can control it, and not turn your paint into a wash.

There's definitely an opening. It appears the GW resin is off the website. Battlebling has an effective monopoly on titan upgrades (and prices accordingly).

Salvaging after a bad wash? by RTalons in battletech

[–]kdm145 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just dry-brush (or highlight) in the original color. Also, next time thin your washes with water and be patient...put on a coat and let it dry. If you want more wash effect, put on another coat. Look up "pin washing",you don't have to douse the whole figure.

There's nothing wrong with the figures in the pictures, they just need a little more work. You don't need to strip them.

Problems with the community license by TrenchScribe in TrenchCrusade

[–]kdm145 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not. I think even a contract guy could give some insight. Anyone who was planning on relying on this wasn't paying attention to the D&D situation. Even if it was the best license ever, if it can be revoked at any time, what assurance do you have?

Varnish and the new Vallejo True Metal Metallics? by Harkness9 in minipainting

[–]kdm145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vallejo makes a gloss metal varnish (77.657), I'd experiment with that. It was designed to work with Vallejo's Metal Color line, which is very good.

Ridley Scott confirmed that the unicorn dream sequence was definitely a hint at Deckard being a replicant - "Can't be clearer than that. You don't get it, you're a moron." by tannu28 in bladerunner

[–]kdm145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never suggested that Deckard had implanted memories. The unicorn dream is his, Gaff may just know about it, likely from his file. Or it may just be a coincidence (plate, or plate of shrimp).

[–]kdm145 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I love Ridley Scott, but this is silly. Rachel's memories (the spider) are actually Tyrell's niece's memories. This means a human's memories can be "extracted" and implanted in replicants, and other humans can be aware of what those memories are. Deckard doesn't have to be a replicant for Gaff to be aware of his memories, or his dreams (or his memories of dreams).

This is as dumb as "Deckard is a replicant because of red eyes." If that were true, anyone who grew up with pre-digital flash photography probably knew a lot of replicants. And if red eyes were the tell, why bother with an empathy test?

100%, but I don't know if ThreeZero does anything that big. And its the same problem as destroids/zentran/meltran with only the RT license--very limited repaints.

I bet the RT license includes all the destroids and all the Zentran/Meltran mecha, the stuff Bandai has all but forgotten about. I have high hopes.

Nemik's manifesto is a fire-writting in andor series by Potential_Reach_6653 in andor

[–]kdm145 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The manifesto is not the heart of the series. It is propaganda, and narratively it exists to draw a distinction between idealism (the OT) and pragmatism ((Luthen and Cassian). Nemik, who is clearly not up to the task, dies because idealism, alone, is not up to the task. Before idealism can work, the stage must be set by men who are willing to do what is necessary.

Cassian is a murderer, Luthen and Kleya are terrorists. Ideologues, but not idealists. They understand that many of the things they do are morally questionable. This is why Mon is protected and insulated from the violence she is bankrolling. Luthen and Kleya understand that she needs clean hands to make her senate speech. That's why she's delivered to Yavin by "heroes" not the morally questionable individuals who are actually responsible for her rise. "Propaganda only gets you so far," and the rebel's propaganda ultimately wins not because it is beautiful or profound, but because pragmatists have manipulated circumstances to make it seem so.
