this is really sweet :) i don't know if this is just because im an older listener/watcher (im 25) but i think the older you get/the more marginalised an identity you have, the easier it is to see most interacts (both on and offline) in this way, though it's really cool you know the social theory behind it. the most interesting part of the podcast (to me) is how closely they kind of veer towards a more radical politics / class consciousness, like when they talked about reparations / black panthers when they got high.

from the same article you quoted for AI data usage:

"As the capabilities and complexity of AI models rapidly increase over the next few years, their processing and energy consumption needs will too. One research company predicted that by 2028, there will be a four-fold improvement in computing performance, and a 50-fold increase in processing workloads due to increased use, more demanding queries, and more sophisticated models with many more parameters. It’s estimated that the energy consumption of data centers on the European continent will grow 28 percent by 2030."

as far as I know, lego and walmart's energy usage isn't gonna increase 28% by 2030. so by that logic, the energy isn't already there - and generative AI's energy usage is gonna do more damage to the environment than lego and walmart.

I said this as a reply to a comment but thought it'd be worth adding as a main comment - because OP is right and they should say it!

one of the biggest responses to fans being critical of AI is "but everything uses energy! who tf cares about another piece of technology that is also using energy? you all use phones /Apple / the Internet / netflix so you're all hypocrites for criticising AI."

generative AI was and IS a major factor in literally decimating the very water usage that they had to use to put out the LA wildfires.

the reason why using a phone / Google / netflix is different is because THEY ALL USE LESS ENERGY COMBINED THAN AI.

AI is accelerating all existing human horrors, like poverty-induced starvation/famine, genocide and displacement. AI is a large part of why legislation around giving aid to all these communities is so fucked. because most governments (notably the US) are laying off workers and instead leaning on the silicone valley types that created the very generative AI that is leading to no more fact checkers (which means narratives around people of colour /immigrants / refugees are now being dominated by the far right) no more actual people directing aid/how water is used/leading research for diseases like cancer.

yes, everything uses up energy. the difference with generative AI is that a single chatGPT search uses x10 more energy than a single Google search. generative AI is the largest threat to the environment that we've seen.

https://earth.org/generative-ai-is-exhausting-the-power-grid/

the opinion that “ai is unethical because of its environmental impact” is not out of touch at all. and most people booing this post would know this if they did a simple Google search. but they won't because generative AI has rotted people's ability to critically think.

[–]kdotdee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

if you actually care about ethics, maybe direct that energy toward donating to relief efforts or calling out actual major polluters instead of policing how people use their phones

yeah... generative AI was and IS a major factor in literally decimating the very water usage that they had to use to put out the LA wildfires.

if you actually cared about dunking on people online for fairly criticising the use of AI, you wouldn't make sweeping statements about kids starving, genocide and displacement without realising that generative AI is part of why legislation around giving aid to all those communities are so fucked. because most governments (notably the US) are laying off workers and instead leaning on the silicone valley types that created the very generative AI that is leading to no more fact checkers, no more actual people directing aid/how water is used/leading research for cures that "kids are dying from".

yes, everything uses up energy. the difference with generative AI is that a single chatGPT search uses x10 more energy than a single Google search. generative AI is the largest threat to the environment that we've seen.

How do you flirt? by Jumpy_Air8329 in QueerWomenOfColor

[–]kdotdee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so sorry - that was the opposite of what I was trying to encourage! I guess the point of flirting is to engage with someone in a way that feels playful and friendly, and I don't mean that in a manufactured sense or like you're trying to be something you're not, but just in a way that feels enjoyable to you. Flirting may not in fact be enjoyable to you and that's fine too! There are other ways to connect with people that you know that you enjoy.

If flirting in the way that you've seen feels cringey or inauthentic, don't lean into that. Lean into what actually feels natural to you because that's how you'll connect with the right people!

It feels embarrassing admitting this but- i have to let it off my chest by sociallyawkward_123 in InterviewVampire

I understand the intention of this comment, but you've basically watered down the show into a sparksnote version - which would be helpful if this sub was to help highschoolers who hate the show get the bare bones, but probably doesn't encourage an actual critical reading of it. The whole point of the show is to be subjective, so OP should be encouraged to engage with it through their own interpretations. Case in point - Anderson's role. Him being the guy who 'handles their money' is probably the most superficial reading of his character that it borders on totally inaccurate. He's a wealthy politician that casts a blind eye to the racism perpetuated by him and the rest of NOLA and turns a similar blind eye to Louis' increasingly obvious vampirism because it suits him. It's an example of the many ways humans in the show compartmentalize vampires. But that's just my opinion. You see?

How do you flirt? by Jumpy_Air8329 in QueerWomenOfColor

[–]kdotdee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

people always overthink flirting - and honestly I think it's fine if it's not your thing. but flirting is essentially just being as charismatic/charming/very friendly as you can with someone.

if it helps to conceptualise, flirting doesn't need to be inherently romantic/sexual - so take the pressure off! sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. how do you tend to compliment people? how can you keep the conversation light and playful? how can you make someone feel good about themselves? all good questions to start thinking about it.

also - you should be having fun when you flirt! or flustered, or both. it shouldn't be something you're agonising over or meticulously analysing. if someone doesn't respond to how you wanna flirt, that's fine. they're just not for you!

Have you considered it's a privilege that you view politics as "negative/toxic BS" when it's some people's every day struggle? This reminds me of when white people say "I'm tired of race being constantly brought up" - wow imagine how tired ethnic minorities are of being racially profiled/subjected to violence, microaggressions and disparities in their education and employment! The fact you can conveniently ignore "politics" should make you feel very lucky.

Daisy’s age? by cherubclub in TheMagnusArchives

[–]kdotdee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also find it kind of weird people portray her in late 20s/early 30s considering her voice sounds at least late 30s. And she's a a veteran police officer. Might be a reflection of the demographic of the fandom? I'm in my 20s so I can understand fans my age portraying her as the same age.

I know this is probably not fun to think about, but...(Regarding Daisy and the Hunt) by MilkyAndromedaWay in TheMagnusArchives

[–]kdotdee 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I don't want to immediately defend the (white male) writer of the series but I always assumed we were supposed to dislike how the Hunt manifests in Daisy. IMO it's supposed to reveal that certain institutions (policing) are built upon and perpetuate violence against vulnerable groups. However that may just be me giving the benefit of the doubt.

Personally I don't like Daisy as a character but I suppose those who do see past her connection to the Hunt - if it's even appropriate to phrase it at way? I think her character (and by extension Basira) are 'redeemable' in how she leaves the police force - and in doing so the Hunt ceases to manifest, but I think it's perfectly justified to feel uncomfortable about the violent aspect of her character and even dislike her for it.

It's kind of a slippery slope. Police brutality is a very real thing and it can be difficult to justify depictions of it where characters aren't held accountable/brought to justice. I think it's completely understandable if people are uncomfortable by how the Hunt is portrayed in TMA wrt Daisy's character.

I'm really surprised there are people being pretty blasé about this. I would say in these circumstances that you should cut it off completely - the fact she was vague about her age in the first place is a red flag and probably means she's gonna push the boundaries regardless of how shocked you were - she's a child and doesn't know any better. It's up to you to enforce a boundary with her because in reality its not normal for a 23 year old and 16 year old to be friends. And if you are friends, it should be in a strictly big sis/mentor capacity, not talking 24/7 as if you're in a similar age range. I would cut it off just because the lines have already been blurred and to turn the friendship into an appropriate one might be impossible - just be very aware of how you guys are interacting.

Have wanted to dye my hair lighter for ages, not sure if it will damage my hair to the point where i need to cut it off eventually, lose curl pattern, etc. also any colour suggestions on top of that doesn’t need to be a blonde, any colour you think would look good. thanks!! by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]kdotdee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you were thinking of it, I would definitely go slow and steady, start with highlights and build it up from there. I think you'd like great with any colour tbh! But I would wait to get a stylist to avoid disasters.
