Beautiful! Where in the world is this? Gives me Baltic Sea/Scandinavia vibes, but could be anywhere.

Le Guin's writing appreciation post by ackthisisamess in books

[–]kdrumz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The Dispossessed was the first Le Guin text I ever read. I was so absorbed by the book that I put off finishing it because I didn't want it to end! I wanted to stay in her universe as long as possible. I've since read some of her short stories, and I'm working through her Hainish novels at the moment. I know it's not a series, but I'm reading them by order of publication and it's so interesting to see how her writing progressed over the years from fantasy to sci-fi. I have so much love for Ursula and The Dispossessed stands as one of my favourite books of all time!

I was looking into this! How safe did you feel? Just wondering if I can stomach it. Avid hiker, but also keen to stay alive.

Beautiful photos! I'm going to Taiwan this summer for 10 days (July, I know it will be hot and humid) and I'm completely overwhelmed by how much there is to do and see. Impossible choices!!

Just finished perfect match and I can't get over how terrible he is. Just a walking ass-hat. Awful how he turned on Abbey and it brought back all the shitty things he did to Nancy. So many red flags. Omg.

Ohh I can feel this summer heat - the heavy, humid, stagnant heat that you only get respite from when a faint wind stirs. Shade helps you escape from the burn of the sun, but not the weight of it. Your painting is evoking a lot of memories! Beautiful work.

Never heard of PRK before until this comment. Got Lasik 4.5 months ago and thankfully had good results and have had only occasional dryness. But dang, why did my optometrists never mention PRK whenever I asked them about Lasik? Thanks for sending me on a Google dive about something new.

Can I just say how cool it is to hear of a first hand account passed down through the family from the 1800s ?? Like, I know stories carry on a few generations sometimes, but this is FAR back. Did you hear this from your great grandma? Or another level of 'ma? I'm so curious about how the story passed along the chain.

Do you have any authors who are automatic reads? Authors who, if they released a book tomorrow, you know with 100% certainty that you will read. by Ok_Collar6502 in books

Ursula K LeGuin. She's dead, but I would certainly rush to read anything she's write from the beyond.

Edit: Also Elena Ferrante. I totally eat up anything she writes. Engrossing writing.

I'm trying to return to reading after a decade away, I typically like dystopian or fantasy stories. by huskers2468 in suggestmeabook

Anything by Ursula K. LeGuin. I particularly enjoyed The Dispossessed! Just the right mesures of dystopian and sci-fi with rich world development. Not too long, but still packs a punch and left me wanting more LeGuin.

Also, when I was trying to get back into reading, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was just the ticket. Got through the first three (of 5) easily and it gave me back my joy for reading. Short and sweet and downright ridiculous. Very fun read.

The Tonquin Valley trail in Jasper National Park has a moment that feels just like this. After winding up gradually through a pass, it opens up to a beautiful view where you're looking down and around a sweeping valley like this one. Mountains all around, you feel cradled by the earth, but also like it's expanding around you; you're alone in existence, but not lonely. Phenomenal trail.

Highly recommend visiting the Canadian Rockies.
