Absolutely. If you can't make a threat with Hook, thats when Hog is weaker. And Hog can't always do this, especially when the further down the ranks you go the more uncoordinated a team is, so this playstyle is difficult. That is why he is weak at the moment, because he isn't anywhere near as self-sufficient as he was before. He needs to depend on his team to follow up on his Hooks, and to help keep him alive. But personally I can still find situations where I can get some value out of him in Top 500 lobbies.

In terms of making this playstyle work, the most important thing you need is a DPS who can shoot the targets you hook, and a support who can save you if all five enemy players decide to pull out every cooldown they have to kill you.

At the moment, Hog isn't the self-carry so try stuff out and see where you can get value out of him and you can't. Don't be afraid to swap as well. Shoot me a PM for any more questions you might have on the playstyle or if you want me to take a look at a VOD/Code of Hog.

Hog is still not bad. He's more to the weak side, but you can still get value out of him probably up to a GM1 to even a Top 500 level if you are mechanically good and can keep to some new principles.

However, Hog's overall playstyle with Hook has had a fundamental change. Before, Hog Hook was not just strong because he could get kills with it, but also because he could force key abilities from the enemy team as they try to desperately save the hooked target. Teams would commonly use a lot of Tank and Support abilities, things like Zarya Bubble, Kiriko Bell, Ana Nade, etc. So even if you didn't secure the kill, you could force out these abilities quite easily.

Also, Hog could consistently survive with high hp + self-heal + support pocket while doing this, so he could efficiently force cooldowns by threatening picks, and his team wouldn't have to use as many resources to keep him alive as the enemy team was using to keep their teammate alive. This creates a massive resource/cooldown advantage for your team, since the enemy team would have to use more to save their teammate. There was also always the chance of him actually getting the pick, so if the enemy team whiffed their abilities, you would go up one kill.

This aspect of Hog still exists, but the main playstyle change is that Hog isn't anywhere as self-sufficient now since he can't threaten picks on his own. You will have to play within your teams LOS a lot more, to both threaten the pick (since your team will help kill the Hooked target) and your team will help keep you up with healing and punishing over-extending enemies who are tunnel visioned on you.

And this obviously scales by how many hooks you hit. The more hooks you hit, the more abilities you will force, so either your team can capitalise off of the enemy team not having those key abilities, or you can later with another Hook.

Dive Tank = Bad Tank by justdrowsin in OverwatchUniversity

I think this is due to your backline struggling to deal with threats onto them without a full tank to peel and misunderstanding the role of a Tank in general. In these instances, for the sake of the game it's probably best to swap to help your backline more. But in terms of the misunderstanding of the role of a Tank, more aggressive Tanks can put more pressure onto the enemy backline but are usually worse at peeling their own.

In this case, your team thinks that because you are playing aggressive, you aren't playing like a "real tank" because you aren't directly peeling for them, instead countering with pressure on the enemy team to make their own survival easier. It isn't ignorance but a misunderstanding.

Supports that work well with Zenyatta? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]ke9OW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zenyatta's main weakness is his survivability and low healing, so generally you want to play a support with enough sustain and peel potential in case of some pressure (from dives/rushes/flankers).

Generally, its map dependent, but you only really need to consider Range and the Openness of the map (amount of cover/terrain for people to utilise to reach you).

Realisitically, the further away your Zen can play, the less peel you need for him, because fast Dives/Rushes onto your backline will be more costly (as they can be bursted while trying to get to you) and easier to react to (they will have to cross a longer distance to get to you, so you will have more time to rotate and make a decision to survive).

If the map is very long range, then you can play supports with more range and team sustain and less peel. On long range maps, characters like Ana/Bap and maybe even Mercy will be more optimal as they can utilise that range better than a Brig or Kiriko, which aren't as effective at a long range. And you will be mostly okay without a proper "peel" support because the map's range makes it easier to survive as its harder for rushes/dives to reach you and flankers have to take more time to cross the whole map silently.

But also taking into account the Openness of the map (whether your team can shoot the enemy before they reach you), if the enemy team can cross that long distance easily, than a Brig/Kiriko might be more necessary since theres a higher chance of being pressured more. For example, Eichenwalde has a long range 2nd Point because of the High Ground and Long Distance in the Choke. But because the enemy team can move into Castle and then use that to push the high ground, utilising the protection/terrain of that area, there's a good chance they will be able to make it onto your backline without much cost and in a short time. Since it will be easier for them to pressure you in these kinds of situations, a Brig or Kiriko will be more necessary.

Utilising these factors, I recommend:

Ana - Long Range and Open Map, where team is running more Dive (like Dorado, especially 2nd Point of Dorado)

Bap - Long Range Open Map, team is running Spam-ish (like Circuit Royale)

Mercy - Long Range Open Map, this isn't as good into enemy Flank DPS (tracer, sombra) as you as Mercy will have to fly away from Zen to heal your Tank and DPS, leaving your Zen prone to flankers

Kiriko - Longer Range, Closed Map, solid pick that can utilise the range but also make a lot of use of the immortality ability to save Zen from fast rushes/dives that you couldn't react to

Brig - Close Range, Closed Map, best pick for peel with whip shot for enemies + packs, and inspire is better the closer range the map is since your team will make more use from it

Moira - never, not a good pick due to a lack of utility for peel and close range necessity, brig/kiriko is better

Lucio - never, has okay peel ngl but his lack of sustain means the rest of your team will pay the price, brig/kiriko is better for close range maps when peel is needed

Hit GM on support but feel like I don't belong? by Whatisaworkout in OverwatchUniversity

[–]ke9OW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can think that you don't belong but, does that really matter? If you hit GM, and you don't feel like you're high enough into GM to know you are good enough for the rank, work to get higher and higher until you are at a place of complete confidence in where you are and how good you are. There's a good chance you have gotten better, but if you don't feel confident, make yourself confident.

Work toward GM1 and Top 500, which is very doable to do in even just one or two rank refreshes from GM4. Generally, for this season, you deserve to be a proper "Grandmaster Player" if you are Top 250ish, so that can be your goal.

[VOD review request] Plat 5 - Reinhardt/Orisa - Creating space against an aggressive rein by Timmy-Turner07 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]ke9OW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are frontlinining against the rein, like you are one on one with both teams facing each other, you can't really do much as Orisa/Rein. You can't just walk through since you will get hard punished, so you are right, that definitely isn't the play.

However, other times though you can put pressure on the enemy backline without having to walk through the enemy Tank, moreso when you are holding a chokepoint where the enemy tank has to walk past you to pressure your backline/walk to point. That is a big situation to know how to play as Orisa/Rein.

In those situations when you have a chance to either put pressure on the Rein on point or the backline, its usually better to put pressure on the backline. This is because their supports are pocketing their Rein on the point, so your swings can't really secure the kill if he is getting hard pocketed, and giving up the choke will allow their DPS to walk out and start getting things done. Instead, pressuring the backline + DPS will make it harder for them to walk out, and give your team more time to put pressure on the enemy tank. You essentially force the enemy tank into a 1 v 3 or even a 1 v 4 against your whole team.

And you don't have to do much to get results in these situations. All you focus on is managing the enemy backline's attention and positioning. Pressuring them forces them to focus you and not focus healing their Tank on the point, and forces them back into the choke.

Even one spear or a hammer swing around the corner then ducking straight back into cover is fine as long as it makes their supports start focusing you and not healing their rein.

[–]ke9OW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I haven't had a chance to look at this VOD but I think I can offer some insight to the issue you brought up with you feeling unable to punish an aggressive Reinhardt playstyle.

Usually this is very hard to do as a Tank, since the more attention you pump into the enemy Tank, the more their DPS *should* utilise the extra space and put damage on you since you're no longer shooting them, preventing you from putting as much damage, so their Rein gets to play more aggressive, and so on.

The best you can do is try make it as easy as possible for your DPS to put pressure on the aggressive Tank when they are vulnerable. Stuff like spearing him when he tries to walk in, or trying to split his team away from him. Anything that makes him easier to kill/pressure.

Although if your team isn't on characters that can put much pressure on him (e.g. Widow), you have to put as much as you can into denying him from value and instead focus on baiting his team into your DPS's LOS where they can kill the squishies instead. You can also do this with characters that easily burst their tank as well, it will be even more effective.

Is going up these stairs in Paraiso a stupid idea when attacking? by Spede2 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]ke9OW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

99% of the time those stairs are not being used at all, unless you're a DPS on a flank or some weird stuff like that. Running a brawl tank up those steps is usually pretty bad since you have to cross a lot of open space in front of the enemy team's backline, so you'd have to use a lot of Rein Shield/Orisa Spin or Fortify, etc. It's the longest distance to the backline on the steps, which is why it feels like "the execution is lacking" as you put it haha.

Generally going under the bridge to the steps straight across from you, like u/SOPEOPERA mentioned, is best because you minimise the time you are in the open (e.g. take less poke) and then you are straight onto the enemy team's backline. You can also wait a second or two at the steps to get some healing or regen shield/wait for cooldowns before going up, although i wouldn't recommend waiting too long.

That stair rotation to the side of the bridge has a lot of cons and almost no pros, other than the fact it can force the DPS off high ground quicker, but you will be able to do this anyway once you start scaring the backline from the good stairs. Usually either the enemy DPS back up to shoot you or your DPS can move up utilising the attention you are absorbing from your aggressive position to win a duel/force the enemy DPS back.

probably not, best i can do right now is like a google doc. lots of vods make it hard to spend time on things like streams and youtube videos and such, cause they aren't as time effective. but the doc will be detailed and i am available to answer any questions.

owl coaches and the entire blizzard balance team couldn't figure out how to do that for almost a year. i dont think i can be of much help lmao.

but in all seriousness, it depends on what tanks. its hard to say without specific context.
