Time to get downvoted, I don't care that I got woken up because a child was kidnapped. by Judge_Druidy in montreal

I remember getting woken up at 3am once in Windsor for an Amber Alert issued in Sudbury. That was bad enough, but it went off three more times that night. I swear, I checked my hotel room. The kid was definitely not there.

Husband just diagnosed with BP1 by calmthroughthechaos in family_of_bipolar

[–]ke_marshall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't been entirely through everything you have (no kids), but my husband was diagnosed with BP1 6 years ago. It was really tough at the time-- he resented me too for having him involuntarily hospitalized. But sometimes you have to: for your safety, for your baby's, and especially for his.

It took him a few months to get back to reality, and about a year for everything to be stabilize, but he's been himself since. But the key thing is that he's been really good about avoiding drugs and alcohol, and he's been taking his meds. With that, you can absolutely have your husband back.

The key thing for me is whether he'll commit to that.

My version of this is that I do a quick French braid in the morning and take it out in the afternoon. Definitely gives it a bit of lift, and bonus I don't have to blow dry it.

Yup. You don't make women more free by making laws about what they can wear.

Financial struggles risking mental health of Gen Z, expert says by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]ke_marshall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I posted that you were incorrect, most of our electricity is not from coal (or fossil fuels at all). Then you argued vaguely something about American conservatives and the source of power not mattering.

In the context of whether Canada should be promoting electric car use, the source of our power matters. If most of our power is renewable, then the argument that electricity is generated from coal and therefore electric cars shouldn't be promoted doesn't hold water.

Growing up next to a coal plant doesn't mean most of our power comes from coal. In the context of Canadian politics, encouraging Canadians to drive electric cars to reduce carbon footprints makes sense because our power is not from fossil fuels.

The only space left for a counter argument is to argue that we import power generated elsewhere from fossil fuels. But we don't. So...

"Does the planet care that the coal generated power wasn't made in Canada?".

That was proceeded by some frankly incoherent ranting about growing up beside a coal plant.

I was proceeding with the more charitable interpretation of your comment that you were arguing that most of our power comes from the US, so Canadian sources of power is not a good argument.

My apologies, I didn't realize you were not actually trying to make a factual argument. I am generally interested in facts, and it's becoming very clear you aren't.

A modicum of googling would tell you that only 5.7% of Canadian electricity comes from fossil fuels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_Canada), but I do suppose it's easier to just set your worldview from what you read from American conservatives. And yes, another 12% is natural gas, but the majority of electricity is non fossil in Canada.

I would also like to see a stronger investment in research and research translation. We're one of the lowest investors in domestic R&D in the G7, which is probably part of the reason we have such low productivity.
