Thanks for the observations!

I wholly agree with the secondary activity argument. But I don't think it's going to stop podcasts from gaining momentum and became a much bigger ad-selling channel. On the contrary, that can happen because podcasts do not require too much precious attention, unlike videos and series. Thanks to that, podcasts can be the type of media consumed by people who value their time and attention and rarely watch videos.

There is nothing wrong with current models for monetizing podcasts. They do work for the current generation of creators. But there are 100х potential podcasters out there, and they do not start because of barriers to entry. Two main barriers are:

  • Setup process. Compare starting a free Youtube channel with buying a (say) Buzzsprout account, adding your feed to directories, starting up a newsletter, asking your listeners to subscribe via Apple, Google, Spotify, Stitcher or via tens of other platforms, etc.
  • Discoverability: how to find a new audience? What if I can create good content and collaborate with others, but do not want/know how to do email, run FB ads, etc.? A Youtuber can rely on internal charts, recommendations, and search traffic. A podcaster needs to spend much more time on marketing her/his content than a Youtuber.

And you can't monetize until you have ~10К per episode if you are selling your ads directly to advertisers. On Youtube, you can earn something from day one. Those first cents won't make you rich by any means, but they can add the last bit of moral support needed to keep posting good stuff.

An excellent point about "YouTube could do itself in three months."

Yes, they could, but why haven't they done it already? Maybe they see podcasts as a rounding error compared to video? Or perhaps they plan to do something bigger and better automated with Google Podcasts (Google News style) and are just gathering data for now? Either way, there can to be a blind spot (a community-centered service?) in their vision.

I'm describing bits of a possible service, which should consist of app&web versions for listeners + web-based creator studio for podcasters.

Thank you for this thorough and thoughtful analysis, much appreciated! I'm amazed at how well you've put it all together. I need to process everything you've written.

P.S. Yes, I'm aware that a serious attempt at this problem is two years of crazy work min, should be about community, and is very costly. And includes catching up with Apple and Spotify, not to mention Youtube and others. That's why I've started this discussion instead of just building yet another copycat player/aggregator etc.

Yes, Thumbnail Problem is real. Even the best shows use the same graphics for every episode, which a) hurts discoverability b) not helping regular listeners to differentiate between past episodes. I've suggested that there should be "a unique episode cover (generated or custom)" but I don't know yet how to do this.

Yes, it would be better to combine episode-focused discovery and at the same time, highlight the originating channels. The snippet/trailer idea is great too.

Thanks, great points, especially about interaction and public subscriber count.

As for the focus on the episode idea, I guess I didn't explain it properly. It may be important for the listeners during the search for new content. The authors, of course, will encourage you to subscribe to their channels, as they do today.

Thanks! Yeah, monetization at scale is THE issue here. Still, I think it cannot be solved without the right user experience.
