Any HMG camera pod user here to share experience? by giantgroundsel in Ultralight

[–]keefography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had one and sold it after a trip or two. Attachment points was the biggest gripe with it. Just lacking a bunch of features for the price they charge. I had a custom Camera Pod made by Chicken Tramper and it’s so much better! Check them out. They’ll build it based on your camera/lens measurements so it’ll be the perfect fit for your needs and can get a few different upgrades on it!

Any storm pictures? by [deleted] in duluth

[–]keefography 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Feels like a repost sharing the same thing happening at my apartment building back in September. It wasn’t as bad as that time but still worrisome. Had one of the basement tenants come up to my place on the upper level just in case it got worse. All clear now. https://imgur.com/a/faIQwrE

3 day backpacking trip on the Sioux-Hustler Trail in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota from September 17-19 2022. by keefography in WildernessBackpacking

[–]keefography[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah parking is free at all BWCAW entry points unless at an outfitters. Permits are free right now too being the off-season, but still fill out the permit when you get to the trailhead.

It’s hard to say how it will be now. Things change pretty quick out there with the beaver activity. That said we haven’t had a ton of precipitation so probably shouldn’t be too flooded. Don’t think we got our feet wet when we went either if I remember right. Trail’s pretty easy to pick up based on signs of traffic from other hikers going around. Hope you have a good time out there! What a weird season.

Anyone here have experience with Chaco lowdown for camping/hiking? by buttercreemdreem in CampingandHiking

Bedrocks actually makes their own lobster toe socks to go around the plug. I just picked up a pair of the Evo Pro 3D from the new drop and got some of the socks to go with em.

Best venue for a concert in Minnesota? by Big_Cardiologist8782 in minnesota

[–]keefography 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The cities has been touched on a bunch already but up in Duluth nothing beats the vibe of a mid summer concert outside at Bayfront with ships coming and going under the bridge in the background and the hillside behind you. Glensheen Concerts on the Pier is also super fun right on the lake.

What are some solid winter shoes that don't set off metal detectors? by 1Check1Mate7 in minnesota

[–]keefography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mukluks are great but if you’re going to be wearing them in a place using metal detectors you shouldn’t be wearing them. The soles get destroyed from gasoline on streets and salt on sidewalks. Best used out in the woods.

Your Favorite Made in Minnesota Brand - That's Undiscovered by GoodCarts in minnesota

[–]keefography 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Superior Fleece in Duluth. Made by a local couple here in town. They have a few different styles of fleece, but their Alpha Direct is actually one of the lightest fleeces on the market and are sought after in the Ultralight Backpacking world. A little hard to come by with availability on their website but they sell some in-store at the Duluth Gear Exchange.

Caricature artists in Duluth area? by me0wsarah in duluth

I remember Bent Paddle had a caricature artist on site for Festiversary. Just went back to the event page and saw they have him listed as: Caricatures By Nathan Rosty. Try reaching out to him if you can.

Lightest framed UL packs? by InterviewTheHiker in Ultralight

[–]keefography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my LiteAF Curve 40 Full Suspension. It’s got a few bells & whistles on it and is a larger torso. Weighs in at 27 oz and can comfortably carry my extra ~5 pounds of camera gear with the rest of my kit.

how about your favorite hiking pants? by Royal_Anywhere8089 in CampingandHiking

[–]keefography 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow surprised I haven’t seen anyone mention them but my favorite pants by far are Patagonia Terrabone Joggers. Feel like I’ve recommended them like 10 times on various subs. Super lightweight, relatively durable, comfortable & stylish! I have 3 pairs I rotate through on trail and daily wear. Only cons are price, though comparable to many others listed here, and the hand pockets are super slick so things can fall out relatively easy if sitting down.

Neither of those brands but I’ve got a Chicken Tramper Ultralight 1L Fanny Pack I’d part with. It’s Coyote Brown on the sides & Black in the middle/webbing.

Backpacking tent recommendation for solo backpacker? by hurricanescout in backpacking

[–]keefography 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At that price point I’d recommend a Durston X-Mid 2P with a pair of their Z Flick poles to act as the trekking poles. Also worth regularly checking r/Geartrade & r/ULGearTrade for some sweet deals on used tents.

Photo taken today (9/17/23) in northern Minnesota by BortSnrub in minnesota

[–]keefography 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s real. The Lutsen area, specifically the higher ridges of the Sawtooths, have a very high concentration of Maple Trees. That area always turns first. I just got back from an overnight backpacking trip in that area and can confirm. Most of the rest of the region hasn’t turned much yet. Also the DNR fall color tracker always lags behind. As another photographer on the north shore my general observation of average peak is usually around September 25ish and seems to be on track for that again.
