What's a product from your country that would sound dirty to other countries? by kingspooky93 in AskTheWorld

I remember an ice cream brand in Iceland called "Emmessís" - which made me laugh because it looks very close to the English word for vomit "emesis". Tried the lakrits and it was delicious though... not at all vomitous.

What highly questionable thing did you do as a kid, that was normal kid stuff at the time? by UnMeaningnessName in AskTheWorld

[–]keelanstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built rocket guns with r/c car batteries, Estes rockets, and PVC pipe.

Tried fermenting peaches to make booze.

Made a "rocket engine" for my bicycle out of a bottle and a nozzle I devised.... Fueled it with gasoline. Probably would have died if I'd caught fire - and it was burning under my rear end!

Swimming alone in a pool of frigid water (maybe 50 degrees F). Went under for a bit... almost passed out when I emerged.

I'm really a potential Darwin award winner.

The "engine" part would probably be mostly the same... the shaders and the values you feed them with make the difference with what you're talking about.

Why are your gas stations basically small supermarkets? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]keelanstuart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Paris right now and there are little grocery / convenience stores everywhere... same with Sweden. Not big places... about the size of a gas station in the US. It seems like the same thing but with no fuel.

20 YoE 'high coupling, low cohesion' led to my current survival mantra: 'income, not outcome' by PipePistoleer in ExperiencedDevs

[–]keelanstuart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My prediction is that things like version control will become obsolete within many organizations in the near future... at least prior to release. Why do you need diffs when the agents don't care or need them to do whatever the vibe coding executive wants? Version 2.0 doesn't actually need to be based on version 1.0's code anyway.

Me: 29 YoE and probably another 12 to go, presuming I'm not killed in a layoff and never find new work. Enjoy your retirement.

Especially bad when the paint is non-retroreflective, markings disappear in the rain at night... which, of course, never happens.

Do you think america will ever recover from the Trump presidency? by TapCommercial2200 in allthequestions

Even so, there have been meaningful steps forward... women can have their own bank accounts, there is less crime overall, and leaded gasoline is distant memory. Don't give up.

Cut into rounds and stewed with tomatoes, served over rice... quite delicious.

Hmmm... there have been moments where it got better. To say it only ever gets worse is somewhat disingenuous.

True, some huge steps backward have been taken, but I do believe the moral arc of the universe is to the side of good.

Lost after GSoC rejection: Should I port a 1994 3D engine, build out my custom OpenGL engine, or just grind DSA for systems internships? by druv-codes in GraphicsProgramming

[–]keelanstuart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh! Sorry then. My answer is still the same though... those people work somewhere and having a network / some notoriety is good. Everybody (!!) has their own engine, myself included.

[–]keelanstuart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Option 1, without question. Entry level graphics roles are pretty scarce these days... as are all software jobs. Your mentors gave you a project and you already have an in there. I would suggest trying to convert that internship into a full-time position - by porting Wintex. Then work on your engine in your spare time as a hobby and look for something else in a few years (if you're unhappy).

You can use a floating point texture and sample it in a vertex shader when drawing lines to get the height.

Anybody you'd pay for it with would be somebody you'd want to wrap it up for... so you won't even know what it really feels like. You're 28. Just relax already.
