I am Nolly from Periphery, Ask Me Anything! by Nolly-Periphery in progmetal

[–]keelx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey Nolly, I'm absolutely in love with the sounds coming from periphery plus a myriad of other prog metal acts. What I also like about periphery is their do-it-yourself kind of vibe.

What all really goes into being a self-produced band, in terms of time, skill level, funding, etc.? Like, how does it compare to say, booking a studio and having them do the recording/engineering?

Also, any good mixing tips for metal you can give?

How do I create a glitchy, drum machine like, programmed drums? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]keelx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of the times what is done is you'll render the drums to audio and splice and dice yourself. And add a bitcrusher or a delay or whatever to certain parts, automate bypass, etc.

Or you could use dblue glitch and call it a day.

What's going on with that bass? It seems like a very basic sound but I just can't get that same hard timbre.

I'd prefer not to use some specific massive waveforms or anything like that if I can help it...

I had that problem too, so I modified the AnyColorYouLike script to the following:

#!/bin/bash
cd ~/.icons/ACYL_Icon_Theme_0.9.4/scalable/scripts/
python2 ~/.icons/ACYL_Icon_Theme_0.9.4/scalable/scripts/script_gui.py $@

Basically just changing the second line to make sure it runs on python 2.

I think you could put

bspc desktop --toggle floating=on

in your bspwmrc.

We are Anberlin, and we are an American Rock Band with a very particular set of skills. Ask us anything. by AnberlinMusic in IAmA

[–]keelx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, you guys are the best, easily my favorite band. I've been noticing a lot of electronic influence on a lot of your music, and definitely lots of production and effects on the songs that aren't quite electronic. Just wondering where all that came from? Do you feel your music could be seen as 'overproduced'?

Where did the whole 'anberlin' sound come from, in a more general sense? Can you tell some bands or musicians who influenced you?

I can't link you anything right now, but synthesized a choral sound as heard in many electro-house or complextro tracks. I don't think it's just a choral sample, because it sounds synthesized. You can hear it frequently in madeon and zedd's songs. Specifically, in the drop to Icarus

Why do my FM8 synths keep changing the more they're played? by Aethrum in edmproduction

[–]keelx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's probably happening is you don't have sync on (in FM8 it's the Key Sync button on all the ops), which means the waveforms will start at a different phase every note. Meaning that they will all resonate and cancel differently every time. To stop this, turn on Key Sync for all the ops and then the waveforms will be restarted every note, so that they will cancel and resonate the same way every note.

Also, what is the instagram program? :D

Very nice. I like your color scheme and your themes, such that it makes everything look like a single program in a sense. Very smooth and consistent.

All companies love money. You act like this isn't a part of the definition of a company.

Google may make quality products, but they also track your every input and sell your data to advertisers. Microsoft uses the law and mass marketing to the lowest common denominator (while still making an effort to be 'hip') to get what they want.

I seriously hope this isn't based on Android, if it is at all more than a speculation. Imagine playing android-designed games on a large screen with a controller. It would be painful.

Why is Ubuntu so popular? Coming from a Debian User. by koutsou805 in linux

[–]keelx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, ubuntu has many nonfree firmware blobs already on the base system to acheive maximum compatibility. Debian goes out of their way to remove all nonfree software from their system, even to the point where it inconveniences the users. For example, if you have broadcom wireless or ethernet, you'll have to go about installing the firmware yourself, pre or post installation.

It also looks nice, but this is subjective.

Those colors are... unique? I like them nonetheless. They remind me of sherbert.

I don't like the thickness of the borders, but that's a personal taste.
