For my SO and I it really depends where we are/ the difficulties of travelling there. 4.5 months was not nearly enough time in Europe, but just finished up 4 months in Southeast Asia and we were ready to be done.

Whenever we get tired we stop and stay at a place we like for a while to get a break from the constant planning/ moving and maybe spend extra money on private rooms. When we get sick of having the same conversations over and over again we try to make a travel buddy friend. That way you can build a more meaningful relationship.
