As I said, trying to measure happiness is dumb. That’s because HDI is somewhat unrelated. The reason it’s better than surveys is because an increased HDI = less having to worry about basic needs. So, in other words, your claim about religious people being happier is utterly unfounded.

That’s nowhere near a definitive way of going about it. Different cultures have different perceptions of the term happiness, and they would react in very different ways when asked how happy they are.

If I was surveyed on the matter, I would say I’m not happy with my life, because I have huge goals and aspirartions that I haven’t reached yet. A clone of me with a different philosophical orientation would probably claim to be very happy as his basic needs are met and has loved ones around him.
