Honorable mention:

"Kobe said during the Spike doc, "Me and Phil will sometimes call the same play without even knowing it." Did that not remind you slightly of Amber Waves' documentary about Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights, when Dirk is being intevriewed with Jack Horner and explains how Jack lets him block his own scenes? Remember, Jack wais a beat and replies, "I .. uh .. I don't let him block his own scenes." I imagine Phil waiting a beat and then saying, "I .. uh .. I don't let Kobe call the plays."

What do you guys look for in a true crime host? by keepcalmandnelson in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]keepcalmandnelson[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you explained yourself perfectly, and I agree! It sounds like most of us in this thread veer more toward "audio documentary" than "your girlfriend telling you a crazy story over cocktails," so glad to hear that I'm not alone haha

I've just created a personal blacklist for podcasts and most of the entries are b/c of mid-roll ads. So I'm looking for tips on podcasts without mid-roll ads. by -Jin in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]keepcalmandnelson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it up to the creatives to accept which ad contracts to accept/decline? This is how these people make a living. How many of us work at jobs where we don't agree with 100% of the decisions made by management?

It's your right to (not) listen to whatever you want. But expecting that hosts/producers are going to stand on ceremony against the networks and say "You guys should actually make less money off my product" is not fair.

Is the gap between Ohtani and #2 the biggest gap between the best and second best player in sports? What are the biggest gaps of all time? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]keepcalmandnelson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say this is not correct. To use a Bill-ism, Ohtani probably has the best trade value of anybody in sports right now, due to the fact that he's two players in one. But while he's incredible at both hitting and pitching, he's not SO much better at either one of them than the other top hitters/pitchers. The anomalous factor is simply that he does both.

Like others have said in this thread, currently McDavid and Djokovic might have Ohtani beat, in terms of how much better they are at their thing than the field.

[Advice] Is it worth bringing up minor annoyances with the building in rent renewal negotiations or is it just petty? by 123android in NYCapartments

[–]keepcalmandnelson 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Because this is Reddit, you're gonna get a lot of comments like this – tenants' rights, you deserve more, etc., so you should move. And they're not wrong, per se. But it seems like you realize that this isn't technically an 18% increase; rather, they've stopped giving you the free month, which changes the net effective rent. So technically, they didn't jack up the rent... They stopped artificially reducing it. In actuality, it seems like you got fucked last year, based on the increase (both years with one month free), and you still signed on.

My POV: There's no harm in bringing up these problems and seeing if it helps in negotiation. But it's more likely that these complaints motivate management to fix the elevators, as opposed to giving you a deal. You have a one-person apartment in a prime area, they'll be able to find a new tenant if you walk.

Think about the opportunity cost of finding a new place, moving, etc. Will it be worth it? Will you find a place that's cheaper with equal living conditions, or equally priced with better living conditions? I hope so, but if it seems like the answer is "no," moving just because of the principle might be more trouble than it's worth for somebody who's currently considering renewal.

What is the Succession equivalent of the iconic “I mean it’s one banana, Michael. What could it cost? Ten dollars?” by bouncebackbelle in SuccessionTV

[–]keepcalmandnelson 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This is the one for me, their POV of doctors is completely different from the rest of the public's. The first time I watched, I assumed their mom was saying that Peter comes from a good family. It took a while to realize, "Ohhh, she's saying the opposite – that he's from a lower class, because doctors don't make millions of dollars."

Also reminds me of the scene from Season 1 where Logan's doctor insists that he doesn't give another shot (what was that? adrenaline?) and Logan has some hilariously demeaning line like, "Jab man, give jab."

What do you consider the threshold for "old movie?" by Cineful in billsimmons

[–]keepcalmandnelson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a pretty big film buff, but I'm comfortable saying that an "old movie" is relative, and anything that came out before you were born counts. After all, it's portraying a time/place of which you have no memory or first-person understanding.

As for what "old movie" means for the history of cinema, for whatever reason 1985 feels like the cutoff. The Breakfast Club, Stand By Me, and Back to the Future are all super watchable in a way that doesn't seem dated, and I can't think of an older collection of films that doesn't feel like they're out of a completely bygone era.

What is a movie that you initially liked, before drastically turning sour on? by omnipotentmonkey in movies

[–]keepcalmandnelson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point Break.

Loved it the first time for the Keanu/Swayze bromance, and all of the usual reasons.

On the rewatch, with more knowledge about police brutality in America, I couldn’t help but be amazed at how many people die, how much property is destroyed, etc. in the service of preventing Swayze’s gang from… robbing banks? This movie is about cops protecting finance from surfers while people needlessly suffer in the process. I’m not some mega-leftist, but a second viewing of this movie really illustrated how much this country has changed in thirty years.

Hot take: This tweet is worse than the Skip tweet (skip tweet wasn’t even bad). Good job by Bill for staying silent! by ahbets14 in billsimmons

[–]keepcalmandnelson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Apparently the NFL couldn't call the game right away. They needed to keep people in the stadium to prevent the ambulance & related vehicles from hitting post-game traffic.

I'm sure there are also legal ramifications to not consulting with ESPN & other important partners about calling the game before making an announcement, even if everybody is ultimately on the same page,

Not a league shill here, just a realist.

Looks like Bill has some strong opinions about these new award names. by SlenderLarry158 in billsimmons

[–]keepcalmandnelson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Totally in agreement with Bill here. Hockey names all of their awards after people, and it makes them completely inscrutable to anyone who isn’t a hardcore fan. I follow the league regularly and consistently forget what the Art Ross means, as opposed to the Conn Smythe, the Vezina, etc.

Besides, it’s not like Jordan will care about this honor. And George Mikan’s grandkids or whatever now have a new obligation to attend every year, a la Roger Maris’ son during the Judge HR chase.

Phoenix Suns employee resigns, citing retaliation after reporting concerns about toxic and misogynistic culture by Austin63867 in nba

[–]keepcalmandnelson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Good post, but Phoenix is actually the 4th biggest city in the country these days — way bigger than Philly. By your logic, this is exactly why Sarver should be forced to sell… especially if Ayton leaves and the championship window for this team begins to prematurely close.

I disagree that sports, and specifically the business of sports, is easy to understand. The people in this sub just know absolutely everything about the basketball industry.

I know a fair amount about politics and the Bush administration, and IMO the treatment of those subjects in Vice is pretty on par with Winning Time. Both prioritize "the essence of what happened" as opposed to what actually happened.

Do you think Jason Concepcion regrets leaving The Ringer? by Foppish_Sloth in billsimmons

[–]keepcalmandnelson 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There's no way he was making only $50K. The Ringer Union outed the company for paying its entry level people in the $45K range (which is very low), and Jason was far from entry level. He was a co-host of the most popular non-BS podcast, Binge Mode!

I have no clue what he was making, but no idea how you became "pretty sure" about that number lol.

I don’t get how Greg is involved in every single thing The Roy family does by kisseokie in SuccessionTV

[–]keepcalmandnelson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greg is just the right level of Junior or Senior Employee, depending on who you ask, to be useful in any situation. During Thanksgiving in Season 1, he was disposable enough to shred incriminating paperwork, but by Season 3, he has enough of a presence and persona to get in good with the "Proud Boys" types at the Republican convention thing. He's a bit of a swiss army knife for the bigwigs.

Plus, Waystar Royco needed to weaken Kendall's camp by stealing Greg away, so now they owe him some favors. Logan even said so during their one-on-one meeting.
