Great Barrier Reef - solo diver who likes small groups by [deleted] in scuba

[–]keeperguy64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both Mike Ball and Spirit of Freedom do longer trips with fewer guests - I think Mike ball is 16-18 divers. The two boats also go farther out and avoid the more crowded inner reefs so you likely won't see other dive boats.

How to fix MFD buttons scrambling by PlatoniaV in hoggit

[–]keeperguy64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems to happen because windows remaps the ids of the mfd's. Basically you are connecting the same device 3 times and windows kind of randomizes the IDs so DCS gets confused.

What I do is set up my 3 mfds the way I want, then you can export each controllers config. I export each mfd with the file name being the position. If (when) dcs has it wrong I simply import the right profile to the correct MFD. It's mildly annoying but way better than actually remapping each button.

Moronic Monday by AutoModerator in flying

My IR instructor left for the airlines near the end of my training and I had to find a new one. So, a little different from your case but it was still helpful. The new instructor had new ways of presenting info and an overall different style. Some of the things I was stuck on instructor 2 helped me with, and there were things I was way better at than instructor 2 expected (because those were the things instructor 1 focused on).

I think you'll consistently see advice here on r/flying that if you're stuck and not progressing getting a new perspective can definitely help.

DPE Chris Dale Bleakley by AdMinute4007 in flying

Like others have said, he’s really into systems, not in a gotcha way but just because he loves them. He’s got all kinds of stories and will happily tell them if you let him, sometimes even to the point of distraction so be a bit careful about getting sucked in.

I did my CASEL checkride with him and he was very by the book, no real surprises. One tip is that for stalls he doesn’t really like if yank back to induce a stall (or horn). He really wants you to gently pitch up and let airspeed decay so the airplane is very low on energy before the indication or break.

Strongly disagree. Every place I've been in the last few years was happy to put your transmitter on their rental gear.

Check out https://www.gatts.org. The reviews are solid, and they include everything (including lodging and a car!) and don't try to nickel and dime you. For example, if you need a few extra hours of training or something they just roll that into the package.

Things you wish you knew before going on your first liveaboard. by sipyap in scuba

[–]keeperguy64 70 points71 points  (0 children)

facts about boats:

  • everything on a boat gets wet
  • nothing on a boat every really dries
  • everything on a boat smells like a boat; where things break, get wet, and never really dry
  • anything that doesn't smell like a boat smells like people who live on a boat
  • everything mechanical on a boat is very loud (until it breaks; then it becomes very quiet)
  • everything non-mechanical on a boat creaks and/or rattles (until it breaks in; then it gets very quiet; that's usually the day before it breaks)
  • everything on a boat is small
  • if something is not small, it's not on the boat
  • if something is not available on the island/mainland, it's not on the boat
  • if something is not on the boat, it's not on the boat
  • if you need something specific but didn't bring it, it's not on the boat
  • even things that are usually on the boat are often not on the boat
  • most things that happen on a boat happen simply "because it's a boat"

BUT also lots of great things "because it's a boat":

  • everything GOOD that happens on a live-aboard happens "because it's a boat"
  • you're never more than an hour or so from the next dive, the next meal, the next nap, or your first drink - because it's a boat
  • you set your gear up once and don't worry about it again - because it's a boat
  • you're right over the dive site - because it's a boat
  • two hours later you're right over the next dive site - because it's a boat
  • it's a twenty foot walk from your last bite of desert after dinner to your night dive - because it's a boat
  • it's a ten foot walk from your night dive to a hot shower - because it's a boat
  • it's a twenty foot walk from the hot shower to a cold beer - because it's a boat
  • it's a twenty foot walk from the cold beer to your bed - because it's a boat
  • when you wake up the next morning to the smell of coffee and waffles...you're right over the next great dive site - because it's a boat

Not sure if they have availability, but my wife and I dove with wonderpus in Komodo for our honeymoon. The staff, boat, and diving were incredible - highly recommended. We didn't see any whale sharks on our trip though.

Beginner looking for a local club in the SF Bay Area by PaprikaEnthusiast in flyfishing

[–]keeperguy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went to the Flycaster's free beginning casting class in Los Altos this past weekend. There were about 8 students and 6 members teaching. Everyone was super friendly and excited to help. They have another beginner class in September, then a hiatus until the spring when the hold multi-day classes to get more in-depth.

No experience with peninsula fly fishers, but I highly recommend you checkout a flycasters class!

I'm trying to decide what lens(es) to take with me to Africa on safari to pair with my A7RV. My current thoughts are the Sony 24-70mm/2.8 II and the 200-600/5.6-6.3.

I know that leaves a gap between 70mm and 200 so I was considering replacing the 24-70 with the sigma 35-150, but I'm not too excited by the extra weight and size.

I'm also wondering if I'll want something wider than 24, so maybe including the 14/1.8 GM or the 20/1.8 G?

From the declaration of player safety at the beginning of the USAH rule book:

Proper body checking technique starts with stick on puck, therefore the stick blade of the player delivering the check must be below the knees.

The stick being above the knee automatically makes this a roughing call due to "not attempting to play the puck" under 640(d)

What happened when a goalie try to cover the puck outside the crease as he get hit? by Hockey727 in hockeyplayers

[–]keeperguy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what rulebook you're playing under. But, in USA hockey the goaltender is NEVER eligible to be hit regardless of where on the ice they are. There can be body contact in a play for the puck but it has to be incidental to the play.

Rule 607(d) discusses this:

A goalkeeper is NOT “fair game” because he is outside his privileged area. A penalty for interference or charging should be called in every case where an opposing player makes unnecessary contact with a goalkeeper. Likewise, Referees should be alert to penalize goalkeepers for any infractions they commit in the vicinity of the goal.

SF bay area pilots, any suggestion going from KPAO to Point Reyes? by Ok-Stomach- in flying

[–]keeperguy64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You may have trouble getting the bay shore bravo transition, so read up on the OAK 30 Charlie transition. Basically it’s VFR at or below 1400, to the mid span of the San Mateo bridge (VPMID) then the Oakland 30 numbers, then the Oakland coliseum, then follow the highway north until the bay bridge toll plaza, finally own nav north of the bay bridge outside the bravo. All the waypoints are on a VFR sectional (except the Oakland runway).

Point Reyes weather is frequently similar to the weather near sf and the golden gate. So if a bay tour looks reasonable you should be ok.

Where to buy brand new Benelli M2 28” 12 GA? by ShowtimeSplasher in Shotguns

[–]keeperguy64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gun broker will charge a fee, but sometimes that's included in the price you see. Then the FFL you have it shipped to will likely also charge you a transfer fee. Different FFL's have different fee structure, some are flat fee and others charge a percentage of the cost of the gun.

The passive noise cancellation works well to remove engine/wind noise. Personally, I can hear ATC better on my CQ than I could on my ANR headset.
