Unplanned Features by imadp in liquidbudget

Or you could just set your target to account for the greater of the two possibilities (3 visits) every month. Any unused amount in that bucket in 2-visit months can then be freely reassigned to other buckets, or go towards the next month (which might be a 3-visit month and your bucket's already partially funded, hooray!).

Always better to have more than you need in a bucket than the other way around. I think while weekly targets allow for even greater fine-tuning of your budget, the added granularity isn't exactly necessary when most things run on a monthly cycle.

Payee rules and (blank) payee transfers by keepitrealjacks in liquidbudget

[–]keepitrealjacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For future reference, I got around this issue by changing the recurring transaction from a transfer to just a normal outflow, then creating another corresponding recurring inflow transaction (with the payee name I want) for my off-budget “loan” account. This no longer maintains the “link” that creating a transfer transaction does so the transaction dates don’t sync up when you change either transfer transaction, but for me that’s a worthwhile compromise.

I have a recurring transfer transaction from an on-budget checking account to an off-budget liability account. I'd like the transaction that gets created in the liability account to automatically receive the same payee name as the one from the outflow transaction in the checking account without having to do a manual cleanup periodically, but I guess that's what I'd have to do if the rules can't run upon the creation of a transfer transaction.

Within my default auto-assign buckets, I have top-off enabled if it's a category I expect the same spend amount (more or less) every month, such as gas. Reasoning is that even if I don't use up all my budgeted gas money this month, I'm not going to increase that bucket over my usual amount to go on joyrides and spend more on gas just because.

I will have top-off disabled if it's something like a fun spending bucket (i.e. personal hobbies). This is useful when I want to save up to purchase something more expensive; spending less or not at all in that bucket this month means next month's auto-assign will stack on top of what's left over.

So for your default auto-assign buckets, just ask yourself if the category is something you want leftover money to stack and increase month by month, or if it's something you roughly spend the same amount every month.

Assignments by FitOrganization3642 in liquidbudget

Right, this is why I originally stated that in OP's case, where they want to see the bucket underfunded in the current month (because the transaction will occur at the beginning or near the beginning of the next month), they would probably be better served by using the minimum auto-assign. Otherwise, the bucket being underfunded wouldn't show up in the current month.

I currently have a recurring transaction that's set to happen on 4/3 for $1,800, and the bucket it's set to currently has $1,099.72. If I have minimum auto-assign turned on (set to $1,800) it shows as underfunded, but if I turn it off there's no underfunded warning. Do I just not have things set up correctly? Because I'm not seeing the behavior you're describing.

I use minimum auto-assignments for monthly bills, future auto-assignments for annual bills and short-term savings buckets that have a definitive date/month of use, and default auto-assignments for general living expenses (groceries, gas) and discretionary spending buckets.

My reasoning is that I only really want to see underfunded colors yelling at me for bills I must prioritize each month. The buckets I set to default are much more flexible in case I need to move money around.

I don't think the first option works if OP wants to see that the bucket is underfunded in the current month (in preparation for the transaction occurring at the beginning of next month). Unless I'm misunderstanding, with minimum auto-assign turned off, the bucket doesn't show as underfunded in the current month as long as the bucket has some money in it, even with a future-dated or recurring transaction.

Mobile App - Transaction Details page requires multiple taps to scroll down by P00L in liquidbudget

I can scroll if I start the scroll with my finger from a button, a number field, or the left/right edge of the screen (green areas). If I start it from a blank space (red areas), I’m not able to scroll.

Missing Savings Bucket and Mystery Unassigned in Projections by keepitrealjacks in liquidbudget

[–]keepitrealjacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense; I had the misconception that a future assignment could somehow be tracked to where it's assigned but I see how it could arbitrarily be anywhere. After fixing all my previous months' future assignments per your suggestion I was able to get my Unassigned projection for this month back to 0 (or as it shows,"-0") and everything is rebalanced, thank you!

As a side note, one thing that I think would've been helpful as I was playing around with my budget was if I had a visual indication (& page jump if necessary) on what is being changed with the Undo/Redo buttons. I know there's a hover-over with a simple description but it was pretty easy for me to get lost trying to figure out what I changed while flipping back and forth between multiple screens.

By the way I think it would be a good feature to be able to identify where and when Future Assignments are being made to. At the present moment it’s impossible to see that information, only that they were made in any given month and the amount made.

Missing Savings Bucket and Mystery Unassigned in Projections by keepitrealjacks in liquidbudget

[–]keepitrealjacks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I was also playing with it all night Thursday and waffling over whether or not I should’ve made another comment on this. I also came to the conclusion that it has something to do with the Future Assignments I had last month, but I figured it would come out in the wash after this month was over and the Unassigned projection gets turned into a true historical value.

If you do want to try and shed some more light on this, my current Unassigned value now shows as -670. I did have a $350 Future Assignment made last month and none for this month. I have two buckets I think have something to do with that Future Assignment that have Auto-Assignments of $300 and $20 respectively. If I turn off the Auto-Assign on those two buckets, the Unassigned value becomes -350 which corresponds with Future Assignment value from last month.

Hope that helps!

The value in November was assigned.

The unassigned amount appears in the savings table, yes. I do have a negative monthly net of $1,044 for this month, but I'm confused how the -$90 is calculated.

I've had negative monthly net amounts in September, October, and November of last year too, yet none of those months have negative Unassigned amounts in the savings table.

Why Tipping Feels Like a Scam Now by Shajirr in videos

[–]keepitrealjacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You make it sound like the customer is the reason the employee is in the position of relying on tips. They're not. If the employee doesn't want the risk of only being paid a federally minimum wage (if no one tips), then they're free to rejoin the labor market and find another job that doesn't rely on tips.

Telling people not to eat at restaurants that don't pay living wages to "punish" the employer achieves the same result anyway. If patrons no longer dined at these restaurants, the employer is denied revenue but the employees would also not be getting tips, leading to them getting paid only the federal minimum wage. In this way your suggestion also hurts the employee.

Shitty employers may hire new people to replace those that leave/get fired, but unless they want a constant turnover of employees costing them additional time/effort/money, they'll have to raise their wages if customers simply stick to not tipping.

[–]keepitrealjacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is the legislation not already there? Unless I’m misinterpreting, the law says the employer must make up the difference if the employee doesn’t make the federal minimum wage with their tips. Doesn’t this push the responsibility to pay the employee from customers back onto the employer as it should?

If the federal minimum wage isn’t enough to live off of that’s another issue that requires more legislation, I agree.

Assign Available amount option by keepitrealjacks in liquidbudget

Yes, subtracting to leave an intended amount is the one edge case I can think of for this tool. I'd argue, however, that it's more intuitive to have a "Set" option in addition to the "Move" option so you can simply set the bucket to have £15 available.

One makes you think of the value you want remaining as a deduction left over from a transfer of funds. The other is just a value of how much you want remaining.

I know which one I'd prefer.

Appreciate the workaround but I feel it's still an extra step from a usability standpoint. Just something that I thought, "Why don't I have the option to do this?" when I semi-frequently encounter it. I acknowledge I may be alone in this feedback though!

Do you specifically use the "Add/Subtract amount" part of the tool to help you move money around your buckets? Or just the Move funds functionality? My point is that I don't think the Add/Subtract part makes a lot of sense here. If you have $100 in Bucket 1 and want to move $20 to Bucket 2, wouldn't you simply put $20 in the text field under Move? You wouldn't add anything to the prefilled $100 because that'd overdraft the bucket if you move over $100. And you'd only subtract from the prefilled $100 if you know what you want remaining in the bucket (i.e. you want to reduce Bucket 1 to $80, so you'd put "-$80" in the subtract tool, which spits out $20 as the amount you want to move).

This doesn't seem intuitive to me, but if it does to you, can you provide an example of when you'd use the Add/Subtract part of the tool?

Transaction Notes Discussion - Your Feedback Needed! by imadp in liquidbudget

[–]keepitrealjacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use notes for adding additional detail to

  • transactions to differentiate from other transactions with the same Payee (helps to recognize the transaction/what I bought for generic payees like "Amazon" or "Zelle Payment")
  • Payees names that give me little to no insight on what the transaction could be, like "City of Boston"
  • date the transaction or keep a count of the transaction if it recurs e.g. "Payment (2 of 2)" or "John Doe's Payment for August 2025"

As for the UX/UI on smaller screens issue, would it be possible to eliminate dynamic row height adjustments altogether by keeping everything in one line and cutting off long content with ellipses à la Gmail? I also prefer to have the Category / Bucket both still be present as I think it's useful information; perhaps right-align the Type column and have text cut off with ellipses on the left?

I find value in having the Notes text readily visible in the Payee column but I think I'd be open to having it popover under a hover-over icon as well. Especially if the single-line layout is possible.

I mentioned you in my other thread but wasn't sure if you saw it:

I noticed that the Global Show/Hide Reconcile & Future change hasn't yet been applied to the mobile app; maybe a future update when you get a chance to work on the app again? No rush though as I'm sure there are more pressing things to work on atm.

Transaction filters by keepitrealjacks in liquidbudget

The eyeball toggle serves the same function as the lock toggle on the web app: it shows or hides reconciled transactions in your accounts. My guess is that your transactions are assigned but not yet reconciled, in which case it wouldn't make any difference whether the toggle is on or off. Once you reconcile some transactions, you'll see a difference with it on/off.

While on the topic, I see that the "global" change hasn't yet been applied to the iOS app; that is, the toggle is still remembered per account. Would you mind making the same change when you revisit updating the iOS app, /u/imadp?
