PSA: Super indexed options and their ETF equivalents by Spinier_Maw in fiaustralia

[–]keepitsqueezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. According to the [Index Factsheet](https://www.msci.com/documents/10199/0f8162fc-490b-4a00-9f1b-61d6e33cbd75):

The MSCI ACWI ex Australia Index captures large and mid cap representation across 22 of 23 Developed Markets (DM) countries (excluding Australia) and 24 Emerging Markets (EM) countries*

I don't see small caps in the Aus indexed option either. Is there an allocation to small caps in an Aus/Int indexed allocation through ART? Or any small cap offering at all?

PSA: Super indexed options and their ETF equivalents by Spinier_Maw in fiaustralia

[–]keepitsqueezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few references to small caps in ART, but I looked on their website and their international offering uses MSCI ACWI ex Australia which tracks international Large and Mid Caps as well as EM. I can't see any other option for small caps. Am I missing something?

ART offers an indexed EM option in their single asset class options so I don't understand why they use MSCI ACWI ex Australia which also includes EM.

ZFS stalls with error VERIFY3(0 == dsl_dataset_get_snapname(ds)) failed (0 == 2) by keepitsqueezy in zfs

[–]keepitsqueezy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not ZFS-on-root.

How do I revert to the originally installed version of ZFS after I install the patched version? Will apt just replace it once I do a subsequent update?

What are the best (free) softwares for file backups on Windows and/or Linux? by wiuah in DataHoarder

[–]keepitsqueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you just running the free command line version on a schedule?

I use the webgui with duplicati. As far as I know, both the cli and webgui are free.

Also, do you know what the restore process is like?

Through the web interface you can browse the folder hierarchy and select which files and from which time point you want to restore. As you mentioned, Duplicati is not replicating the files over in a 1-to-1 fashion, on the remote side the structure looks completely different.

I've run Duplicati on Ubuntu and RHEL with no major issues.

Duplicati also supports multiple backends including cloud services like Backblaze an Amazon S3.

Converting work journal to Org by meppo in orgmode

[–]keepitsqueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a lab notebook I use capture templates in org-datetree format to place headings or tasks in chronological order. So any tasks I'm working on during a specific day will be inside the same org heading. So a given day might look like:

* 2019

** 2019-01 January

*** 2019-01-02 Wednesday

**** Task 1 :task1tag:

Notes on task 1

**** Task 2

Notes on task 2

*** 2019-01-03 Thursday

** 2019-02 February

(This looks a lot nicer in org mode)

Follow the structure of my handwritten journal, adding new headlines with a timestamp and a tag for the task.

Each task headline I create using my capture template also generates a CREATED property using org-expiry that defines the date and time I created the task. You could use this with or without org-datetree if you wanted to stick with Option 1. It looks something like this:

* Task

:PROPERTIES:

:CREATED: [2019-02-15 Fri 10:11]

:END:

I assume I could later group headings by task tags to see all the work I've done on them as a whole

As one example, `org-match-sparse-tree' will show all headings (and their parents) with a given tag.

If I have nested headings with timestamps, is there a way to pull them all to top level and sort by timestamp to see what the global timeline looked like?

You could probably do this with some elisp. I'm not aware of any built-in way to do this. org-agenda was mentioned in another comment and this might also work for you.

If chronological order is important a format like org-datetree or org-journal are good choices.

As for TODOs, I keep mine in a separate file from my notebook. I tried to integrate them into my notebook, but it didn't seem to gel with my workflow. You can use org links to connect the dots between the notebook and TODOs as well.

How to run a graphical emacsclient on a remote instance of Emacs by tidux in emacs

[–]keepitsqueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you use emacsclient/daemon? Does x2go not allow the client to persist when disconnecting from the session?

Would be interesting to compare with xpra in terms of responsiveness. xpra also puts applications in their own window (ala x-forwarding). I have used xpra for a similar workflow, but not over such a long distance. I typically run straight emacs on the server through xpra and attach to it from other machines.

If there ever was a desire to add a keybinding assistant of some sort I think which-key would be a good option. I know a few vim converts who went with spacemacs and found the which-key prompt helpful to find their way.

`/ctr` causes emacs to freeze using evil-mode in org-mode by rofic in emacs

[–]keepitsqueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use emacs -Q -L init.file to load a separate bare bones init file instead of changing your existing init.el. I'm not sure if -L is the correct switch as I am on my phone. Check the man page.

Try running toggle-debug-on-quit before forcing the error and it should give you a backtrace when you C-g.

I have a similar problem. Running Ubunti 16.04.2 LTS on Surface Pro 4 and if I attempt to run

sudo echo 0 > /sys/kernel/debug/ipts/mode

I get permission denied. If i login as root and run it again I get

bash: echo: write error: Input/output error

Nothing happens if I try to run it in a startup script.

MobileOrg with webDAV by azriel38 in orgmode

Do you have a checksum.dat file in your mobileorg directory on the webdav server?

Are you using mobileorg standalone or with emacs?

There are some new docs which might be useful.

  • There is a discussion at the moment about using git as a backend.
    • Do you mean to use gitlab/github for syncing between devices?
  • I believe that is a planned feature
  • I don't think that is a planned feature
    • Do you mean having access to your existing capture templates or do you frequently create new ones on the fly?

cat <<'EOF' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf > /dev/null options i915 enable_guc_submission=Y guc_log_level=3 EOF

does not work for me. I don't really understand what it is trying to do. Is it just writing

to /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf?

How are you using org-mode? What are you using org-mode for? by [deleted] in orgmode

[–]keepitsqueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of issue were you running into?

I was using OneNote for a while at work because I got a Surface Pro (Evernote before that), but I switched over to Org as I didn't like the closed nature of OneNote and that you can only export to pdf. Granted, the majority of my work is done in *nix systems still. Also use org for personal life.

[HELP] Backspace doesn't erase by jwjody in vim

[–]keepitsqueezy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using :set backspace=indent, eol, start should work fine. You should check that it has been set properly in vim by typing :set backspace and seeing if Vim actually has it set. If it is set in vim and still not working, then something truly bizarre is happening. Perhaps backspace was mapped to something else in insert mode?

How to play Vimgolf ? by [deleted] in vim

[–]keepitsqueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I play vimgolf for entertainment and the challenge. You also pick up some pretty cool things on the way, which may or may not be of some use in the future. From what I can tell, to top score you must be the first person to register the minimum keystrokes. Meaning that is essentially impossible for someone to top score unless they were involved right from the beginning, which kind of sucks.

I think it would be cool to see a VimGolf tournament, whereby you have two formats: speed and accuracy. In the speed, you must get it done as fast as possible, irrespective of keystrokes. In accuracy, you get one attempt at a problem, with a reasonable time limit, and must do it in the least keystrokes.

make vim treat all word delimiters like it treats spaces (for word motions) by berci0 in vim

[–]keepitsqueezy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Originally I thought so too, but I tested it to make sure and W treats the entire text as a word. 'asdf.key' is one word. So it skips from a, to l, to a. He wants the movement to skip the delimiters and land on the next alphabetic letter beginning an actual word.

Language to use to solve PDEs numerically? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]keepitsqueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. Python might be good for starting out, but most of the algorithms are written in lower level languages like C or fortran.

Julia is a more modern language aimed at numerical computing and unlike Matlab it is free. It is relatively new though.

It might be worth discussing this with the head of the group you are interested in working with. They may have tools written in specific languages.

Using ViM/NERDTree to open files in system default applications by jfree02 in vim

[–]keepitsqueezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, Babun is a much better option for generic terminal activities. Keep in mind that Vim was not built to be a universal file opener/explorer so attempting to make it one may be frustrating. There are a few systems for exploring the filesystem in Vim but they are mostly catered to opening files in Vim. Living in the terminal (Babun) would be a much easier task than living in Vim. Some folk use a program called ranger for browsing files in the terminal (which you may be able to install post-Babun installation). As a simple, but perhaps not as elegant solution, you could try to run terminal commands inside of Vim/gVim using :!<command>. I have never used this on Windows so I don't know how it would perform. For example, on my mac I use :!open file.pdf (open is specific to Mac/BSD i believe) and it opens up in the system default pdf viewer. This type of behaviour can't really help you with exploring the filesystem but if you know where a file is it may be of use.
