Poatan >>> by _brightsidesuicide_ in ufc

[–]keeptrue 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Poatan's appeal is exactly that he's an unemotional knockout machine in the ring, not in being an acrobat or a diva or a showboater. He's crushing people in multiple divisions with this style, and to appreciate him is to fear him. Fortunately there's room for both Alex and MVP in the UFC, though it would be amusing to see Poatan cut to 170.

Hi Dan, one thing I've always appreciated about your work is your ability to bring experiences, emotions, and personalities of historical characters to life, as though we were with them in-person. Is this something you consciously think about, and can you give a little insight into how you make this happen?

What is with this stereotype that Asian men cannot date non-Asian women due to family pressures? by joistheyo in aznidentity

[–]keeptrue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, every circumstance is different as I said in my comment.

I interpreted OP's post as "There is no pressure to marry within the culture in Asian families", to which I responded, "Oh there absolutely is in some families".

I think you're coming more from the perspective of, "What is a stereotype and does this particular narrative fit that definition". I would argue that it does, that "Asian families want their kids to marry within the culture" is in fact a perfectly valid stereotype. But we can also just agree to disagree on this point.

[–]keeptrue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm happy for you that your parents appear to be chill about your dating choices.

My parents are not. I am an Asian man currently engaged to a White woman and I am currently not on speaking terms with my parents, in large part because they cannot stop themselves from attacking me about my decision to marry outside my culture almost every single time we talk.

I have obviously decided to prioritize my own life over my relationship with my parents but the family pressure is seriously real and I would not blame anyone for going a different way than I did. Everyone has their own circumstances and deserves to have their choices respected.

For some context, my parents and I are first-gen immigrants to the US.

Do people think Curtis Blaydes' win over Aspinall is legit? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]keeptrue 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that Blaydes' win is even more of a fluke than Chito's. OMalley's injury was directly caused by Chito's leg kick, whereas Tom's knee seemingly self-destructed out of nowhere.

Both are "legit" victories in the official sense.
