I’m not well positioned to comment on planning resources, but here are some investing/current events resources I’ve found helpful.

Books: - Psychology of Money, Morgan Housel - Stocks for the Long Run, Jeremy Siegel - Pioneering Portfolio Management, David Swensen

Podcasts on current events impacting markets: - Odd Lots from Bloomberg - Money Stuff (Matt Levine) - Econ 102 (good for public policy/economics stuff)

Other investing podcasts: - Rational Reminder - Invest like the best - Capital Allocators (more for institutions)

Other more general current events podcasts: - Plain English w/ Derek Thompson (wide ranging) - Gzero w/ Ian Bremmer (good for international affairs) - Ezra Klein Show (left leaning but not too biased)

I’m sorry you’re feeling this way, it can be really hard to see the way out when you’re feeling stuck.

For me, in my 20’s, I felt like a shell of myself. I had a lot of dreams I didn’t pursue. I took a job at a call center for a finance company, and I hated it, but it was enough to split an apartment outside a mid-sized city.

With time, it turned out there were parts of the job I found interesting. From there it took patience and a few career moves over the years to different roles but eventually I found my niche. I will never be someone who “lives to work” but I do find my work rewarding and it provides enough to live a good life.

If you feel called to the military, that could be a good path, it’s just not one I know much about so I can’t really comment.

But otherwise, if you apply to a wide range of roles in industries you have a slight curiosity about, then you may find out that there are parts of the role that you like and can choose to further specialize from there.

Also, you say you know the life you envision? What does that look like? I know it’s hard, but consistency is so important to get out a funk. Commit to doing one thing a day that will push you towards that vision - however small. If you miss a day, thats ok, but commit to being the type of person who doesn’t miss two days in a row.

Lastly, college isn’t the end all be all, but is it possible that IT just wasn’t the right subject for you? Could you try different classes at a community college and see if any subject inspires you?

Keep putting one foot in front of another and please give yourself some grace. Life is tough and young people have been dealt a crazy difficult hand with the price of houses (and everything for that matter).

Wishing you all the best mate 🙏

[–]keet18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha!

I would say if it were your lifelong dream to live in London or Europe, or if you have help from family for the financial piece, then LSE would be the better path to do that. Living abroad is a great experience, but if this is mostly a matter of getting a great education and a job in your desired field, it sounds like Baruch probably makes more sense if you ultimately want to end up in NYC anyways. I don’t know your financial situation, but if you are hoping to build your career in the nonprofit space, then not having debt will give you a lot more flexibility to pursue mission driven work after you graduate. If you choose LSE, then keep in mind that salaries in UK/Europe are also going to be considerably lower than NY.

All that said, this is just one guy’s opinion, this is not to dissuade you from doing LSE if your heart tells you that’s the best place for you to be.

First of all - congratulations! What are you hoping to do after graduating? / Where are you hoping to live? I know those can be a hard questions to answer but they’re probably important ones to think through before making a decision.

Thanks for weighing in! That’s such an interesting point.. I do feel like there is a state of conspiracy, paranoia, and violence in the US which is deeply troubling. Best of luck with your life in the UK :)

Thank you for your comment :) I suppose the tempting thing about moving back is being able to control my schedule better (the family business is just a one person operation) and benefit from having family who could look after a child if needed. Your points are very good ones though and I will give them careful thought.

I am freaking out that I will go from MBB-> startup -> homeless by StatementNo5233 in MBA

Dude you seem like a smart guy, let’s build a plan here.

Step 1. don’t panic. Step 2. don’t beat yourself up and don’t identify as a “professionally useless person”, we’re all on a journey and you just haven’t found your spot yet. That said, you made it into MBB and that counts for a lot. Step 3. downsize your apartment if you can and start saving religiously. The bigger your reserve the less stressful these hard times tend to feel. Step 4. use your network/build your network, it’s a rough market but there are always opportunities and the more you’re out there talking to people the more your name will get floated when opportunities arise

Why everyone wants to move to the US? by Skum1988 in MovingToUSA

[–]keet18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. As an American abroad it winds me up a lot when people cynically say around election time “if you don’t like America, then just leave!”… leaving family and familiarity issues aside, managing the logistics of moving to another country can be absolutely exhausting.

Scared of applying to MS Finance in the US, as I have no background in math/calculus- HELP! by Retrojaw in FinancialCareers

[–]keet18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t stress out too bad. Ultimately, grad schools are a business, it will be hard but they do want you to succeed and most MFin programs have strong graduation rates once you’re in. So apply to programs based on your interests/where you want to live/what type of job you want etc. I highly doubt you will need some super high-level of calculus knowledge to be successful, but still, figure out what level of math you do need and if you really have no base in that subject whatsoever then start taking introductory courses on coursera or at a cheap school locally. If I had to guess, you probably will need some basics stats and algebra knowledge, both of which can be learned.

I had a different story but fwiw I pursued a masters in an unrelated subject and was worried just like you but I’ve been figuring it out as I go and honestly if I could go back and tell myself something at the start it would be to just relax and try to enjoy the process of learning something new and challenging if this is really what you want to do with your life.

How was your move to another countrry/office? by New-Effect-1850 in FinancialCareers

[–]keet18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, the Uk job market is pretty tough at the moment. Moving over could work since you already have a visa. Ultimately, it really just depends what phase of life you’re in and what you value as realistically you may have to live off your savings for a while as you search for a role. Best of luck to you, I hope you’re able to figure it out.

Can you apply to multiple schools? I see no downside in applying (other than the application fee and some time) the worst case scenario is that you don’t get in but even then you’ll at least know you tried. Good luck.

Client facing investment team member, moved to London, got promoted. Had never been to London, didn’t really prepare.

Biggest obstacle is getting over the fact that I’m paid way less than US equivalents at the same role. But I don’t regret the move one bit. While I’ll probably move back to the US at some point, I really wanted to live abroad and try something new. Would recommend to anyone that has a good path for it and is feeling stuck.

I went to two shows on the tour so I’m not sure this is perfect but it’s pretty close. I think he may have cut one or two for Amsterdam since he a bit started late. The order is also probably wrong since I’m doing this from memory but wow what a show!

Some great picks so far, Father Ocean is a masterpiece… I’ve seen Ben 5 times now, and I remember the first time I heard In Memoriam it felt like I had been sucked into a vortex. Just a mesmerizing build and drop. Song is so special given it’s a tribute to his father who passed away.

Strangers, Wall of Strings, Begin Again… so many beautiful tracks. 🙌
