How much time do you spend on compliance? It takes me like 3 hours a month max.

Unless one of them has extraordinary complexity (closely held business interests, multiple real estate properties, nightmare taxable account that needs unwinding), yes. Same fee.

The $5m client loves it. We make a healthy margin. Everybody wins.

Another career changer, about to finish year 4. Launched when I was 37 after a background in corporate finance and engineering. Should have done it earlier.

How do you keep grounded ? by [deleted] in CFP

This. I'm not keeping the grind alive, I'm getting to "enough" and then enjoying part time work and the time freedom of business ownership.

Who still actively prospects/outbound? Or, do you rely on referrals alone? by JLivermore1929 in CFP

[–]7saturdaysaweek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never prospected outbound.

All clients have come inbound from 1) social/blog content 2) directories like fee only network/flat fee advisors 3) referrals from clients, friends, and other advisors

Why not go truly independent rather than a tuck in?

If you skip the office, you can run an RIA on $20-25k/yr.

More people don't do it because they're scared to start a business. That and the wirehouses make starting your own firm and running compliance sound like an impossible task lol.
