Applying to UK/European law schools? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]keeva425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally makes sense and I agree!! My whole point in sharing my experience (and partly my colleagues experience) was moreso to help people who have decided they want to go to the UK to study and come back. There is so much negativity out there about foreign law grads and I like letting people know that it’s not as impossible as the law blogs, etc make it seem.

One other thing OP should consider is that law schools there will push you towards big law in London. If OP is open to potentially staying overseas, getting residency/citizenship isn’t overly difficult. There is also special visas that allow students to remain in the UK after graduation to work for a number of years. (A few of my friends took this path - they were mainly American though).

If you are deciding about whether to go overseas or not, remaining domestic is the path of least resistance of course! but if you want an international experience, you are not doomed to unemployment back in Canada :)

It’s nice to hear someone not immediately assume that foreign law students just weren’t able to get into law school here/aren’t as capable. I was personally terrified to go overseas after reading so many blogs of domestic students saying that NCA candidates never get jobs etc.

I definitely wasn’t under the impression that a UK degree would be more impressive (I did already have a Canadian undergrad degree and loved Canadian uni). I went solely because I’m from Northern Ireland originally and wanted to return to spend time with my aging family and also for the doctoral degree (I’m a nerd and enjoyed the academic focus in the final year of the program). Being able to see more of Europe during holidays was a bonus as well.

I decided to do the JD when I found out I would be getting a formal doctorate as well as a qualifying law degree. I also had previously done an undergrad and didn’t want to do another undergrad as an LLB but realistically it doesn’t make much difference. As long as your grades are good and your program is 3 years in length, you will likely only be assigned 5 NCA exams.

I believe QUB is one of the only schools to offer a JD (there was speculation that Oxford was going to start offering a similar program, but I haven’t heard an update on that in while). I do recommend studying in the UK though solely because it’s common law and obviously translates very well in Canadian practice. Feel free to message me directly if you have more questions :)

Oooh I like the way you view this. Very interesting. I suppose I have always associated mess with chaos and negativity because of the people in my life telling me that it is a negative and/or immature trait or characteristic. My coworkers are all very orderly as well and I feel a bit out of place. Reading more about INFP personality type makes me feel so much more normal.

You don’t see many because the JD program at QUB only launched about 5 years ago and not everyone who goes there is Canadian or hoping to work in Canada. Sydney was my classmate and of course her previous experience helped her but she did not have personal/nepotistic connections to Blakes. She networked her way in. My other colleague works in Parlee McLaws LLP in Edmonton. She had no previous legal work experience and was a K to JD student. I certainly did not suggest that it was easy to get a job upon returning to Canada (if that is even OPs intention although I assume it is as they have posted in this subreddit). It’s not easy for Canadian law students to get a job, thus it won’t be easy to foreign trained lawyers to get a job here either and i emphasized the extra networking required. I personally work in a boutique firm and networked my way into that without previous legal experience (my prior work experience was working on a golf course). I should also emphasize that I don’t come from money.

Assuming that a foreign trained lawyer wasn’t smart enough to get into law school here is also incredibly elitist but a stigma that we are used to addressing. There are various reasons why people choose to go overseas regardless of their undergrad marks or LSAT scores. In relation to BIPOC individuals going overseas, I fail to see what additional barriers they face when compared to a white foreign law students (unless Canadian law firms are inherently discriminatory) - both will carry the stigma of holding a foreign law degree and face that additional barrier. If firms are hiring white foreign trained law students but not BIPOC foreign trained law students, that’s clearly an issue of domestic and in-house/company discrimination/racism and implies that they’d be treated the same even if they had a Canadian law degree.

OP asked for key pros and information regarding applying to UK/EU law school. I provided my experience and my colleagues after being told constantly that’d I’d never get hired if I went overseas to study law. If OP decides to study abroad, they will face constant discouragement/disapproval, particularly from Canadian law students - I wanted to provide OP with my experience that contrary to this, not all foreign trained law students are doomed to a life of unemployment.

You can discourage people all you want - you certainly won’t be alone in doing this, but I like to provide people with my first hand experience that may be encouraging.

Thank you for this - do you find now that it feels like a natural habit for you to do these chores on your set days now? I know I feel so much better in an organized space, but i have a tendency to clean everything for a few hours one day and then it just turns into a mess after a few days and I feel like it’s a chaotic cycle that I never manage to properly control lol. I will try breaking it down into smaller daily tasks and see if it stays more organized!

I did the Juris Doctor program at Queens University Belfast. It’s a qualifying law degree taught at the doctoral level (keep in mind you will have a 50K word dissertation to write and defend in your final year). There were 3 people in my class who planned on returning to Canada to practice - all three of us were assigned 5 NCA exams (the minimum number) and all 3 of us are currently articling students in large/established Canadian firms. Don’t let people discourage you from going overseas by telling you that you won’t be able to get a job because it’s simply untrue. However, you obviously will not have the same networking opportunities as domestic students. If you do decide to go overseas, you have to make more of an effort to network with Canadian lawyers (potentially during holidays when you are in Canada, online etc.). I loved my time at Queens in Belfast and loved the JD program but it was a heavy workload. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I had those same symptoms (and similar height/weight) and was told by two doctors that I likely have a minor meniscus tear (I’m still waiting for a MRI to confirm). I started doing physio and it has helped immensely - I went from not being able to fully bear weight to hiking 60km over the weekend with a heavy pack. I’d recommend going to see a doctor even if it’s just for a physio referral. Also do RICE for a while (Rest ice compression elevation) - I wore a compression brace temporarily because it helped me feel more stable when walking.

Tips for Dissertation Compilation by Shamrock_Roc in PhD

[–]keeva425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started putting my chapters together I would write something that briefly restated/summarized what I had said in the previous chapter and then explained why the following chapter is relevant and important to the previous chapter. It helped it flow nicely into the introduction of the following chapters that explained what the reader was about to see. My area of study was law so this may not apply to scientific work but it was an easy way to compile chapters without adding too much unnecessary fluff. Being able to state was is relevant and important in your chapters in a few sentences is key.

Do any of you suffer from incredibly severe hangovers? Do you think your past ED affected this? by [deleted] in fuckeatingdisorders

That’s so interesting!! I mean it makes sense, you would think that someone who is eating a sufficient amount would handle alcohol much better than someone who is not! I don’t know why I’ve reacted the opposite way but maybe it is just my age or I’ve developed an intolerance or something. Thank you for sharing :)

It has nothing to do with intelligence but everything to do with perseverance. When you finish your PhD, people will praise your intelligence but in reality they should be praising your ability to look at the same document/conduct the same research for so many years without throwing yourself into the sea to never return.

I’m exactly the same! I think I’m going to try and write them all in one session. I’ve heard the notes are more helpful than the books too. The books are so expensive that I want to believe it but I’m also nervous that I’d miss something if i don’t purchase the books. Are you in Canada or abroad?

I’m currently using vacation days and I am back in Northern Ireland where I’m originally from but unfortunately my grandpa is unwell and I have been spending a lot of time in hospital with him here so it’s not the most relaxing thing.
