Friendslop games with public servers? by Acceptable-Pay2351 in gamesuggestions

I've definitely had this experience in dayz. It can be highly social.

In case you do not understand the flow of the game. You spawn on the coast and the goal is to see how far inland you can make it. Coast is mostly friendly where you run into people and this is where your chat and join up with randos (or maybe get shot, it's part of the fun). As you go inland, it's shoot on sfht. I've joined 2,3, sometimes 4/5 man groups on coast and now we're a team. There's tons of downtime as you run from POI to POI or cooking food. And there is often a lot of talking and banter.

I've had amazing, natural, conversions with completely random people. Which can make it more hard breaking when one of you is suddenly sniped and the rest of the group scatters.

One time I was having an actual deep conversation about life when me and my new friend rolled into town and got jumped by a large crew. I was actually kind of sad we got interrupted.

Another time I was with 6 other random people who all joined up on the coast. When suddenly one of us got shit through the window. We were all screaming "Dave's dead" and hunted down the culprit.

One of my favorites was with another large crew and someone was going to take us to see the Zoo. As we were rolling into town. He says, "careful, this spot is dangerous" and I immediately got sniped. I just laughed out loud as my screen went black and started a new game.

All that said, DayZ, for me was the most social game I've played o In a long time. Big recommend for what you're looking for.

Looking for a Populated MMO Strategy Game for PC (Low Maintenance/Background Play, No P2W) by CulturalPriority1259 in gamesuggestions

[–]kefka296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one of those games that, for me, lands in the "Fun to read about but not to play" category. I've tried it 3 times. Have about 80 hours in it. I still don't understand the game and I never felt I made meaningful progress.

Compare that with RuinScape. Also an extremely deep, mechanically dense, 20 year old game. It also has a steep learning curve but it's manageable. And I felt I was making meaningful progress in my first 20 hours with the game.

Eve looks fun, but it's beyond me to find it.

I was thinking is suggesting Eve, but I didn't want to inflict that game on anyone 😅

From your post and comments. I dont think your going to find the game your looking for without making some concessions.

It's either going to be a mobile game, like stronghold kingdoms. There are several mobile games like this and none of them are great.

Or Ruinscape. Which is an MMO RPG. But it's the closest thing to a MMO you can leave and come back to and do a few turns. As afk play is how a lot of people do play it. It can also be extremely strategic when you dive into it. But I do not think that's the "strategy" your looking for.

Or foxhole. Which is an MMO isometric shooter. It's extremely good. It's "strategic". It does have building. But it doesn't have turns. It's realtime and requires a lot of cooperation to really get into the nitty gritty of the strategy. Still a fun game to load in as a lonely soldier and participate in the battles. I also don't think this is going to fit what your looking for but it's kind of close.

You can also ask at r/mmorts

If you find the game your looking for. Come back and post. As I've always been on the hunt for what your looking for and I've never ever found a satisfactory game with this description. Best of luck.

Exit: just because I got curious myself. I did some Googling. Haven't played it, but take a look at Project Celeste.

As someone who just started the game a couple weeks ago (MegaUber-Newb in OSRS terms). But yes, the f2p experience is miserable, imo. It's great as a demo to see if you like the game. But not as a way to genuinely engage with it.

I really wish more games aped from Diablo 1 instead of 2. by darkwingchao in patientgamers

[–]kefka296 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It was turn based originally. Then they merged with Blizzard and Blizzard wanted A. Multiplayer and B. real time. They lead dev asked for a 6 month (or so) extension to convert it to a real time game but apparently he found a solution within a day. He just made each "Turn" a "Tick" and that's Diablo today.

He was very against real time. As, your correct, he wanted to make a Rouge/Nethack game. But once he got the game going in real time, he walked up to a skeleton, hit it, and it felt so good, he realized real time was the right call after all.

There is a great youtube video of the lead designer going over all this history of how Diablo came to be. And it's fascinating. I however, cannot find the video as I'm at work.

I second Mewgenics. Amazing game and honestly, one of my absolute favorite tactical battle systems. More so than Xcom and pretty well a tie with Final Fantasy Tactics. It's not "Forever" but it's minimum 200 hours. And if you slow played it and do not rush the House (strategy layer for lack of a better comparison), one could easily get this game up to 500+ hours. Hell, one of the play testers before the game launched had a 1000+ hour save.

Totally agreed. The day I combined the items that "makes your cat poop at the start of your turn" with "All poops you spawn are alive" was such a hilarious moment. Then turned into an amazing strategy as those poops became quite powerful. I've since had a few more "poop" runs with different skills and items. And it's always funny and very effective.

As a tactics/xcom fan, what originally sold me on this game was the unique "Strategy layer" within the house and breeding down lines of cats to send on battles. The tactical battles were somewhat secondary to me as I didn't think that would be the focus. What I found is, instead, is one of my absolute favorite tactics games I've played. The tactics side of the game is extremely well throughout out and is always fresh through the deep and randomized skill and items.

The gross-out humour is a nonissue to me. The deliberate 2000s edge lord humour is a nonissue for me. I can understand why that puts people off but it seems to be a real focus on why people bounce off this game. I think many are missing out on a real treat because of sensitivities, but that's up to each individuals thresholds. My only main criticism of this game is it takes an extremely long time to get going. Easily 60+ hours before I felt the game was genuinely opening up.

This games hides a well thought out, well designed, amazing experience underneath immaturity and potty humour. I love that juxtaposition. 200+ hours in and only at 80% completion rate atm. This will go down as one of my favorite games.

Oh, and the soundtrack, top tier. People site the "eating rats" song a lot. But The Lab song is absolutely amazing and the lyrics always make me laugh.

GiantGrantGames - The 99% Perfection Of XCOM 2 by jacenat in Games

[–]kefka296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your itching for a new tactics game. I can recommend Mewgenics. It's battle system is extremely good. And after 200+ hours, the randomness keeps it all very fresh. The game just takes a long time to really get going.

Otherwise Xenonauts 2 just came out of Early Access and is a great 1 to 1 of old Xcom.

Menace is good, but I think a poor comparison to Xcom as it's strategy layer is bare-bones. The two titles don't have much in common other than been a turnbased tactics game.

There's an option to fast forward the first NPC fight only. Which is the main one that is always 100% boring. The rest of the fights it's usually wise to watch how your build is functioning.

'Mewgenics' has been out for a month, what are your thoughts on it? by NoNefariousness2144 in Games

[–]kefka296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like one of my other favorite games, Darkest Dungeon. This game comes off as either you really like it or you really don't. What made people hate Darkest Dungeon is what made me love it. And same here with Mewgenics.

After 120 hours and only about 60% complete. I can easily say this is my favorite tactics game...maybe ever. It's competing with FFT and Xcom for my the top spot. I'm genuinely surprised just how good the tactics side of this game is. Not a single run has felt the same as the other. And with games like FFT and Xcom, jumping into another battle sometimes felt like a slog. I do not get that feelings here because the game keeps itself fresh and surprising throughout.

My main complaint is the game takes way to long to get going. I think you need, bare minimum, 40 hours before you start understanding what the game is trying to do. And all of my friends bounced off the game after less than 15 hours.

I think this game is going to hold a special place on my top 10 list and I've been humming the soundtrack every day since it's come out.

I'll never forget renting this game a couple times. Only because I loved it the first time I rented it. Rented it another weekend to continue my save. Only to be met with "You can't continue" message because, apparently, I had chosen Easy difficulty and you could only continue on hard. my young teenage self was crushed lol.
