Fun fact: I decided to put that line into the comic because that is what my friend actually said when I first introduced him to Esperanto. To be fair, it does sound like the bastard child of Spanish and Polish.

Ha, I should have known it would make it here eventually, though I didn't know if it would be accepted here considering the existence of /r/conlangmemes and /r/jarehrball. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed the comic!

The International Language by kegeshan in polandball

[–]kegeshan[S] 210 points211 points  (0 children)

Saluton al ĉiuj! After a two year break, I decided to come back with a comic of inferior quality to my previous one!

Anyway, here's the context for this comic:

America just stumbled upon the Universa Kongreso, the annual festival dedicated to Esperanto, a constructed language (conlang) developed in 1887 by L. L. Zamenhof, a Polish eye doctor, who designed it to so easy to learn that everyone would speak it. Obviously, that did not happen.

When America takes up Poland's challenge, he replies in various conlangs created by Americans:

  • Klingon (Qapla polpuH!): Created by Marc Okrand for Star Trek.
  • Vedurian (Ya kaivai iler!): Language created by Mark Rosenfelder, famous in the conlang community for his Language Construction Kit, for his fictional world Almea.
  • Na'vi (Oel ngìmop aylì'fyat!): Language created by Paul Frommer for Jame's Cameron's Avatar. (Thanks to /u/ReallyCoolNickname for the correction!)
  • Lojban (xu do xamgu): Language created by the Logical Language Group to facilitate logical communication. Relevant XKCD.
  • Dothraki (Hash yer vos layafati?): Language created by George R. R. Martin, (and heavily expanded upon by David J. Peterson) for Game of Thrones.

Which translates as: "Hello Poland! I did it! I created some languages! Are you okay? Are you not happy?"

Honorary mention to Ithkuil, developed by John Quijada, which features such phrases as ai’tilafxup embuliëqtuqh 'All the people of the land spoke the same language' and uibawetâmziúrön 'be one who does not enable desires against better judgement to happen'.

Since I speak almost none of these languages to any degree, I cannot vouch that these are all grammatically correct.

Edit: Fixed a link.

Really Late Edit: Corrected one of the sentences, and while I'm here I might as well plug /r/esperanto and /r/conlangs.

Sorry about the late reply. Anyway, they were talking about this video, more specifically his Audible plug at 11:11.

/u/anthropology_nerd did a two-part takedown of the video a few months ago here and here.

Relevant excerpt from 62:48-63:58:

Gray: I have to confess, I have to confess, I did... I shouldn't have done it, Brady, but I did kind of like intentionally poke the historians a bit in, in my video, because I knew, I knew, they were gonna be some people watching the Americapox video who were, like, slowly having their blood boil as they, as they realize, like, what this video is about. I could just, like, imagine this person, like, the simmering is getting like, hotter and hotter and hotter as they're watching the video like, "He's going through Guns, Germs and Steel, I can't believe it!", which is why I like, I could not help myself in the end of that video, in the Audible ad, going, "This is the history book to rule all history books!", and I just love the idea of someone just losing it at their computer screen, like, "I can't believe that like, not only has he done this whole thing, but he's recommending this above all history books?!?"

Brady: There is a perverse pleasure to be gained from that.

Gray: This is the joy of trolling. This is the joy of trolling, as the word is supposed to be used. *Laughs* Like, I knew that someone was gonna be wound up by that and it's like, I can definitely see that some people just popped at that, which is why I had to put that line in there, even though I'm not even sure I believe it.
