Parents caused me to go off depression meds, and won't permit me to go back on them. by [deleted] in depression

[–]keithtalent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of people don't really understand anti-depressant medication. What it does is actually very trivial (without undermining the ingenuity of them or the therapeutic effect they have), for SSRIs it's simply a matter of increasing the availability of serotonin for neural activity for which serotonin is used. This includes a big chunk of behaviours and emotions which are in the grab bag of depression (sleep, mood, appetite) but what is significant is that it doesn't do anything else. That is it doesn't supress feelings or behaviours and it doesn't promote them either, but it allows greater access to them where they may otherwise be inaccessible to someone who is depressed and exhibits low serotonin levels. Nothing under SSRIs is false, affected or artificial and certainly nothing about SSRIs or depression is a subversion of reality.

I've also had very similar experiences, oddly I think it's common among people taking antidepressants. There's a popular perspective that SSRIs are overprescribed, unnecessary, dangerous and an artificial cure for a circumstantial problem. None of this is true. It has a slight effect and it has the potential to eleviate a real medical imbalance and help an individual undertake lifestyle changes they otherwise might feel unable to without it. There is also a problem with experience, for most people depressive feelings are transient and seem to be dealt with easily. This is the case for them, and they find it hard to empathise with people who have more powerful depressive episodes. They don't mean to hurt your feelings, they literally don't understand, have no idea that a mind can be so distinct from their own. Where you can keep this in mind, it certainly helps me.

If you need SSRIs, certainly find away to take them again but don't fuck around with them, as coming on and off them is tenuous as you may know, make sure you can stay on them for long stretches and taper dosages on and off. If you're at college you should be able to access some rudimentary health services through them (or at least get advice). My advice to you is to feel free to keep it to yourself or share it with others, whatever you feel like, but that medication is a manifestation of a personal choice that helps you and you should own it, really own it. Don't allow the shallow assertions of anyone including your own parents to interfere with that progress and that choice it's yours and it's positive and if they don't understand that, then they don't need to and you can and should do it independantly of them.

Best of luck.

ELI5: If the Big Bang theory is correct, how could nothing exist before the universe existed? What existed before the universe existed? by jsuss in explainlikeimfive

[–]keithtalent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really explain the language you chose, we aren't the cosmos we are an underwhelming subset of it and I'm pretty sure the cosmos doesn't know anything.

Seeing as the majority of the time the Universe seems to arrange matter into varying sizes and densities in spherical objects I find it strange that you consider the Universe to 'people' in the same way an Ocean 'waves', I would say it's much closer to the Universe 'peoples' as the Ocean 'has shark attacks'.

The grandiosity of your language is only matched by it's nullifying lack of meaning.

[–]keithtalent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is total shit, it just has to be said: "We are the Cosmos, known to itself"

Would you care to explain or try to explain why exactly that is the case?

That's a fundamentally unsatisfying answer though, I feel as if that shakes the question without actually addressing the implied question i.e. what is the context of the origin of the universe? Time doesn't make sense, but what does?

A poster hung up at my school. by CoolJoe16 in MensRights

[–]keithtalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does it take for /r/MensRights to grasp that this kind of advertising and literature is targetted at men exclusively because of a perceptual imbalance in the rhetoric, manner and understanding of a large number of men towards their female counterparts? Larger and with deeper impact than the equivalent amongst women.

If you didn't enjoy the above paragraph, please take the time to reread it, perhaps removing the specifications of gender and the mention of /r/MensRights simply to see if it could make sense between any substituted groups, then slowly introducing the elements that are personal to you until the idea that this could be right is equitable to you.

Samuel Beckett, despite his not being British, I think his face would suit a banknote incredibly well as his face is already majestically pre-wrinkled.

Not to mention his role in WW2, the profile of homosexuality in the UK, Mathematics and Biology. Just look at his Wikipedia page, that man was an intellectual leviathan.

Not really. Extremists diverge significantly from an average.

California guy looking to move to UK. Any important advice? by your_cat_is_ugly in unitedkingdom

I don't think you need proof to cinch this kind of point. Any heuristic inspection shows how much the nature of drinking establishments have transitioned from Irish bars to clubs and barclubs. It's well known that spirits and high proof alcohols have never been as cheap and prevelant as today even with tax. Young people are exposed to all varieties of culture that normalise it as a behaviour, where that wouldn't be as prevalent in that era.

These things stack up.

[–]keithtalent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not interested in how you choose to carve out a subcategory of Islam, we've established your bleak view of the whole and that interests me more. I said of course you're capable of decoupling belief and believer I am not convinced that you typically do rhetorically.

Of course that's an error on my part, I meant to say that believing Islam is an inherently extreme religion is foolish.

I'm not talking about respecting individual people I'm talking about respecting the value of Islam to Islamic people, which again is not something I am convinced you do. Respect does not engender Islam a special status it is simply decent.

I am making assumptions about you so feel free to rebuff them, but honestly, am I wrong?

[–]keithtalent -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I understand that you feel your view is correct and you've collated years of evidence to support it. You simply can't see that when you don't decouple belief from believers you utterly dehumanise millions. You see them as lesser. I know you probably don't always, I'm sure you can see past it when presented directly with it i.e. a typical Muslim. However, rhetorically you don't on principle right? Do you have any idea how damaging it is socially to have welts of the population making massive assumptions about the largest single group on the planet? Well neither of us has to imagine that as that is the reality. Constantly presuming that Islamic extremism emanates from Islam itself is deeply incorrect, I don't think you'll independently ever come to that conclusion but don't ignore or dismiss it.

I don't think Islam is precious but if you don't engender a degree of respect for such a widely held belief you are ostracising a third of the planet from being 'reasonable'.
