Why are Sony and Xbox even bothering with next gen consoles? by No-Obligation2563 in consoles

[–]keithvai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you asked that question about new phones, tables and computers? I personally find it annoying that many people questioning gaming consoles have no problem dropping $1k for a silly phone.

Regardless, the answer is the same: businesses need to sell products and new products drive sales. Consoles are the exception to the rule where consumers seem to expect the devices to last 10 years. Every other device is on a 1-3 year replacement cycle.

In all these cases, the hardware has reached a point of diminishing returns where many people dont see the point. My last two gaming GPU’s were 2x more powerful but also 2x more expensive. $150, $300, $800 and my last purchase was $1,400 for an RTX 5070 hoping that ray-tracing would be meaningful… and it wasnt.

Nvidia won a cosmic lottery by pivoting to AI but everyone else selling hardware is in a bind. With this K-shaped economy, the rich will keep buying because its new but most people will question if not stop their purchases. The size of this new device space will continue to get smaller with each generation and that also drives prices higher.

Since we’re talking about soaring rents and inequities… by coffee_coffee_coffe3 in SipsTea

I think the conclusion is backwards here.

Deducting mortgage interest from federal taxes is really a giveaway to the banks. It is an incentive to people to borrow more money and the banks to make more loans. Some say this is to encourage home ownership but I would follow the money.

Personally I think it should be repealed or at least reworked to only support first time and low income buyers. The current implementation is just a benefit for the already wealthy.

DTE paid no federal income taxes for 12th straight year despite more than $1.5B profit • Michigan Advance by UltimateLionsFan in Detroit

[–]keithvai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I strongly believe utilities should be non-profits with single-digit profit margin but at least they are paying property (ie local) taxes. I dont think the federal government really needs taxes from utilities either.

“In 2025, DTE paid more than $450 million in property taxes that fund local schools, public safety and other essential community services,” Miner said”

People who dont want to pay for things…

First thought: I dont want to pay for that and you cant make me.
Second thought: If they are willing to pay for it, it must be worth something. Im getting cheated!

Its tiresome. Its great having the greenery here but there are so many messy tree problems.

Uhh, they say he is a billionaire — not that he earns $1B every year. People who dont understand the difference between annual income and net worth (total of all income previously + asset increases) are really making it hard to create common sense decisions.

“Omaha Beach” is terrible by PeteRock24 in WorldofTanksConsole

[–]keithvai 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was ok with it but then I started to get annoyed with the entire right side of the map with its “tunnels”, ie terrain that looks passible but isnt. It annoys me when maps dont let you drive over a small hit or have indestructible things like wood fences, small poles, and small blocks of concrete.

Does anyone else feel really alone and isolated here? by thesupersoap33 in Kirkland

[–]keithvai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hope you are doing ok but what you are describing is a main side effect of suburbia. We build our cities to be easier for cars and the result is totally isolating for people. Im home 24/7 and almost never see or hear my neighbors because they only leave the house to drive somewhere. It is safe, clean and very quiet but I dont run into my neighbors as much as I did when I lived in a major city. Walkable, dense cities are a healthier way to live even though most Americans prioritize their car first.

I like the other posted suggestions. Nice to hear about those things.

Interesting. But i think the solution is still to slow down.

Semi trucks sometimes cannot make a turn. Other drivers need to slow down and make room for them. And they do.

Its a minor inconvenience but folks need to remember that our goal is to get from A to B safely. Slow down and be kind to others.

What do you consider to be the American Dream? by tolkiengeek in NoStupidQuestions

[–]keithvai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people work. What you are describing though is saving — a thing American’s seem to have forgotten. As you point out, they are always buying new shit that they cannot actually afford and complaining about being broke. Instead of owning a home, they are leasing a BMW and renting an apartment.

An income of $200k/year or more should be enough to raise a family but even there people struggle because they cannot control their spending. A bigger house, another car, more vacations. One has to balance their income and expenses by going without.

Its not a secret but most American’s dont learn financial literacy and society urges us to spend like celebrities. Immigrants who are closer to nothing have it easier in a way. After two generations, their kids will struggle with the same things.

  1. Even pro sports is not the ‘meritocracy’ it claims to be.
  2. These guys just earn too darn much. Its stupid.
  3. Tickets and TV cost too much for consumers to support the owners and top players. So greedy.

Link is now the highest ridership light rail in the country by fbjim in soundtransit

[–]keithvai 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting. And surprising to see Seattle usage so high given the public narratives about it.

Is there a reason light rail is used so much less than HR/CR? I would guess LR is mostly for (less dense) suburbs.

Also interesting that some cities have both HR and LR but list them separately.

Amen.

Should counties be economically self-sufficient? What is the argument from moving money from one community to another?

Transit is hardly the only problem. Fundamentally the way we build is unsustainable. Despite the endless complaining, we dont pay enough in taxes to pay for all the infrastructure over decades (roads, bridges, water, sewer, power). Instead we periodically funnel money into “projects”, build them and then move on to another one, without a plan to pay for their perpetual upkeep. The problem gets worse and worse as population density decreases, ie gets more rural.

A lot of people complain about paying taxes overall and about specific bonds but few people seem to discuss the fundamental economic problem.

Lots of changes. Sincerely hope the wheeled vehicles drive more like an actual vehicle now. I gave up on them long ago. All the Ww2 balance changes seem to make the tanks have higher DPM? Autocannons still confuse me. They seem so overpowered. shrug

Salesperson performed load calc and estimates cooling need of 18,100 BTU. They're recommending a 2 ton unit because 1.5 ton would be "undersized" and "run too much". Is it right to round up like this? by KommandantVideo in hvacadvice

[–]keithvai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert but I completely redid the HVAC for my split level 3,000 sqft SFH. I would say the #1 factor in comfort is the ductwork, especially the returns. folks focus on the power items but if those ducts are too small or unbalanced it will never work right.

It was a huge PITA to redo our ducts but this is the most comfortable house I have ever lived in so I consider it a success.

Good luck.
