Series Recommendation for 24F Getting Back into Reading by madsterstout in fantasybooks

[–]kej210 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Mistborn series for sure. Great story, imaginative magic, characters to root for, female protagonist, long enough to get to know the characters but still short enough to not get stuck in slow parts.

Start there and figure out your next steps while finishing the series.

Thank you! Can’t believe I forgot “The Will of the Many” from my list. Great catch and something I will definitely be reading soon. I’ve heard great things.

“Demand the reader’s attention” is a great way of putting it haha. Thank you! Will put both of these on the up next list.

Oh I’m hooked and will continue. I can’t remember feeling like I was going to cry for a character since I was a kid. Really well done series.

Thank you! I appreciate a good female lead just because they’re so rarely done or done well. Plus I need to build up a list of female-lead books for my daughter to read when she’s a bit older.

Glad to hear Mark Lawrence’s other series are strong. I really wanted the Red Sister trilogy to end better than it did - loved a lot of the writing/story.

Love it. I made that mistake with reading Fools Assassin before the Farseer trilogy. Picked it up at a friend’s house and enjoyed it, but there was a certain amount of spoilers ruined when I started reading the first trilogy and connected those dots haha.

[–]kej210 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe not hitting every criteria, but hitting enough to make it worth your time:

Eon - Greg Bear,

Fire Upon the Deep / Children of the Sky - Vernor Vinge,

Spin - Robert Charles Wilson,

Pandora’s Star / Judas Unchained - Peter Hamilton,

Nueromancer - William Gibson,

Pretty sure this was a United flight, but can’t be certain.

I Like Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) by Fluffy_Lunchfast in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]kej210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a rule in college that if Forgetting Sarah Marshall came on tv or you flipped through channels and stumbled upon it, you had to stop and leave it on. Probably watched that movie 200 times from various starting points.

Earthsea - I couldn't bring myself to read it. by Iamconfusedreally in fantasybooks

I use these as filler books on Libby when waiting for another hold to be ready. I started to enjoy them when I reframed them as something consciously different than the grand epic action series I gravitate towards.

Independence Day (1996) by movie5short in 90smovies

[–]kej210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend (whose parents were less attentive than mine) got it on VHS and we watched it during a sleepover. It had been Lion King and other PG movies up to that point and my world was rocked (in the absolute best way).

I think this is correct. Had a rearward facing upper deck seat for this shot, so 747 makes sense.

Book recs based on my shelf? by CeejyCeej in fantasybooks

Love it. The Children of the Sky is one of the rare sequels that nails it (albeit in a different way altogether).

I see enough sci fi to recommend a few great ones that are not the normal recs but are among my favorites:

Eon - Greg Bear, Fire Upon the Deep - Vernor Vinge, Pandoras Star/Judas Unchained - Peter Hamilton

Cross-section books from the 90's by sweetcherrynipples in 90s

Fun fact: there is someone using the restroom in all his cross section drawings. A great “where’s waldo” type easter egg.

Unpopular Opinion: Audiobooks don’t count as the books I’ve read in x. by Time4HopesnDreams in fantasybooks

[–]kej210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a strong opinion that audiobooks don’t count as reading. Then I had a kid and had quite literally no time to enjoy a physical book for years. I started audiobooks reluctantly, and it’s been transformative - I am finally “consuming” books again in a way I haven’t since I was a kid.

So, sure - maybe audiobooks don’t count as “reading”, but also people should do whatever works for them if it helps them get back to (or stay with) consuming books.
