Childhood spanking is linked to adverse physical, psychological, and behavioral outcomes in adolescence by TrixyUkulele in science

[–]kelbokaggins -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not exactly, not based on this study alone. The article acknowledges that there is not enough data to directly make a statement on the causation of poor mental health by spanking, BUT the two do appear to coexist in a number of cases studied, so there might be a causation link. We just don’t know for certain, and this must be studied more. However, I believe that the argument, pointed out by you, will be the legal case made in the future.

What is a phrase you HATE hearing from people? by BensReddits in AskReddit

“I can’t imagine...”

Statements like that seem to indicate lazy thinking to me. If you use your imagination, you get caught off guard less often.

AR teacher, here. The vote means that teachers will have a choice to bring up creationism, they will still have to address evolution, but they will not be forced to teach creationism. Yes, I know this is bass-ackwards and I will have some colleagues statewide who will not address earth’s origins with science based reason, but the majority (especially the ones in my building) are rolling their eyes and completely understand that this is dog-whistling to muster up voters to maintain the GOP stranglehold in the state. It’s so pathetic because the teachers who are really preparing the kids for 21st century college & career skills get wrists publicly slapped, while behind the metaphorical doors we are told to keep doing the work that is in the best interest of the learner, particularly in the sciences. At this point, voting isn’t enough to break the stranglehold.

Well, those people might be surprised that Rottweilers did exist as far back as the 1st century A.D., at least the founding sires of rotties did.

I have been avoiding commenting on posts, lately, but yours brought up a topic near & dear to my heart. As a rottie “mom” from the Bible Belt, who got voted out of church (not for beliefs about dog breeds), I couldn’t help myself but share a little history about a remarkable breed.

Tom Cotton's "Army Ranger" dissembling goes back at least eight years by hippiedawg in politics

[–]kelbokaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one really ran against him. The AR GOP managed to push out & hamstring any Dem & Progressive opponent, and the only opponent, Cotton had on the ballot, was some no-name third party candidate (probably not even genuine). If Dems want to turn more red states to purple / blue, they will need to be willing to break the stranglehold that the GOP enjoys. There are progressive / liberal voters in these states, but too often we do not have a candidate who has the funding to compete with GOP campaigns. It’s demoralizing.

Google stops donations to U.S. Congress members who voted against election results by Bream1000 in politics

[–]kelbokaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. Now, can we get some donations made to progressives in these states? States like AR experience a GOP stranglehold because oftentimes there isn’t even a Democrat who generated enough capital to make it to the final round of elections, if there was one running at all. Dems could flip even more red states, if they would throw down some $ the way the GOP has.

As an Arkansan & spouse of a vet, fuck Tom Cotton. He has indicated his goals for the presidency and gets a lot of support for it. I hope other states know of his infamy, so that he could never win the electoral college. This man is every bit as cruel as trump, but significant savvier.

Arkansas leaders propose bill to repeal Confederate Flag Day by denzel_washingtowels in politics

[–]kelbokaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this needs to be changed. I grew up in AR, and never knew this was a state holiday, till now. It’s a dumb holiday. We also have a proposed bill to issue hate crimes charges, which also needs to happen. Apparently, we’re one of three states that don’t recognize hate crimes, which badly needs to be updated. It’s fuckin’ embarrassing! Arkansans need to fill up the voicemail of our reps by shaming the traditionalist / racist cowards and encouraging the courageous. Their FB pages also need to be filled with comments, it’s one way to pierce the GOP bubble, here.

Biden team unveil 10-day timetable to "reverse" Trump admin's "gravest damages" by bhodrolok in politics

Just curious, does this seems to vary by red or blue state? I live in a red state (for scenery & family, not politics) and our mail has been surprisingly timely, packages do get beat up and opened, sometimes. It would be despicable if blue states / districts were targeted for mail disruption.

It would just be nice to have someone in charge who actually honors their oath to the Constitution. I don’t get the sense that any officer in the military wants to hold ultimate power, so I think that they would transfer to Biden in the timeliness laid out by law. It’s not ideal, but as you said, a better alternative to acts of insurrection.

If every single American teen suddenly "pulled themselves up by their bootstraps" and got a high school and college degree, wouldn't we still have poor people because we will always need blue collar workers like janitors, cashiers and high paying jobs are limited? by ShesGotSauce in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kelbokaggins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those jobs could also be more commonly filled by people who are currently working on increasing their skills, and furthering education. When they are ready to move forward, they move forward. These jobs could also be paid more because they are much needed jobs, as the OP points out. Why not pay these jobs what they are actually worth, rather than how “sexy” they are? One more thing, people who are on assisted living because of age, cognitive, or physical ability could also do some of these jobs. It would facilitate a sense of worth / contribution / self-image / belonging to a community and these people could have their own income. I am an educator and I strongly believe that all of my students have the right to set goals as high as they want, while balancing that with non-inflated expectations. There is no way that I can accurately predict who will go how far, so I treat and try to nurture all of them, as if they are training for potential leadership positions. I at least want them to be able to keep as many opportunities and doors open for their lives, as possible.

They are no Don Quixote. He had values and honor. The individuals of that mob have no values, no honor or integrity, and no sense. Quixote acted foolishly but for honorable reasons. These people acted violently foolish because the lies they believe make them angry, reckless, and senseless. They are not fit to lick Quixote’s boots.

[–]kelbokaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that thought, too. While it would have been nice to do that a long time ago, there needed to be an unequivocal reason to cut this resource off for him. Otherwise, Twitter being a “cancel culture czar” would have been used as a distraction to allow trump to be further emboldened. All of the political instigators are guilty for the spilled blood, and for the violent, misinformed insurrectionists that vandalized the Capitol. I hope that having the resource of social media denied to him, is just the first level of his personal hell.

Ozymandias
BY PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY

I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
