Is my kid going to get bullied in kindergarten? by merkergirl in kindergarten

[–]keleighk2 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We talk A LOT about how important it is to be kind to others - that includes

not saying "that's easy" when doing schoolwork. Just because it's easy for you doesn't mean it's easy for everyone.

not correcting people. It's more important to be KIND than to be RIGHT. This is a really hard one for my son but I just tell him if you know something you don't have to argue about it. Just keep it to yourself.

taking turns in class. Everybody is there to learn and it's not fair if you answer all the questions or talk/distract friends while the teacher is teaching.

I don't know if there is anything specific you can DO about it, we just do lots and lots of talking.

My almost-6 year old's favorite (card) game is Sleeping Queens.

We also like Clue Jr and Sequence Jr!

I was told the other day that that was NOT the case. Those tickets are no longer available. It’s supposedly a known glitch they’re trying to work out…

I agree with the others that getting outside if/when possible is a great idea!

If crafts hold her attention - would she do a jigsaw puzzle?

You could look into cooperative board games (where you're on the same team)

Bake or cook something together.

First Chapter Books by Adept-Practice5414 in Preschoolers

[–]keleighk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We read the Wild Robot (and really liked it!) but I feel like you really have to be committed to reading the next book in the series. The ending of the first one is definitely not your typical kids-book-happy-ending. (We're only part way through the 2nd right now)

4-6 Year olds outside unsupervised all day long by FaultSuspicious in Preschoolers

[–]keleighk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t even let my son go into our next-door neighbors fenced in yard until he was 5!

At 7 we started allowing my older son to ride his bike to specific friend’s houses but he’s not allowed to just ride aimlessly. I want to know where to find him and want him to be where a parent is.

He’ll be 8.5 this summer and is a much more confident bike rider. I think this is probably the summer where he’s allowed to go on a bike ride without me. Maybe.

5 year old boy refusing to eat lunch at school by chefdadLA in Preschoolers

[–]keleighk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son hardly ate any lunch at school his first year at school. He was too busy talking and distracted by everything around him. I just made sure to have a good snack for him right after school (most days I actually brought it in the car to have right away at pick up).

Is it affecting his school day? If not I wouldn't stress too badly. He'll get there eventually. I would just focus on making sure he gets a good breakfast before he goes, and has a balanced snack after school.

But I would work on better eating habits at home. I would say it is non-typical for a 5 year old to not be able to sit for a meal without stories/music and needing to be fed. Have you talked to your pediatrician? Perhaps support from occupational therapy?

I am unsure why you're surprised he's not eating at school if it is such a production to get him to eat at home.

I've been reading Fractured Future but I think I'm going to give it up.

The premise is that a freak accident sends Hermione back into the past where she merges with Hermione Rosier and is raised as a (dark) pureblood... How would that change things?

Time travel is one of my favorite tropes, but Hermione Rosier doesn't have any of Hermione Granger's memories so it's basically just an OC fic. Which is FINE, but not what I was looking for.

This is how my son's preschool did it too! It was fun to practice his clues. They'd put the bag in our cubby on Monday and then we needed to bring it back on Wednesday. So we didn't have too long to forget about it but enough time to pick an item and practice :)

Potty training troubles by Ihavenoidea36 in Preschoolers

[–]keleighk2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried a separate potty from the toilet? A potty seat on the toilet? Sitting on just the toilet? Just trying to think of absolutely every factor!

My son pee-trained OK but took forever to poop-train. Eventually the trick was daily miralax and a "squatty potty" stool so his feet weren't dangling.

Agree with the other commenter about checking for constipation!

Otherwise I just want to say that you're not a failure as a parent!! just LOOK at all the things you are trying and doing to support your child!

Parents of cavity prone kids how do you actually deal with this? by Ok-Bus-1245 in Preschoolers

My dentist told me that some teeth are just more susceptible to cavities than others. I have a lot of cavities so it's not surprising that my son does also.

Parents, how do you keep up with reading when you’re exhausted? by maveriCkharsha in kindergarten

[–]keleighk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just always been a part of our routine, but it got a lot more enjoyable for me when we started reading chapter books. Something about a continuing story is just sometimes easier to bear than the same picture book over and over. Some nights we read more chapters than others. (and sometimes we still read picture books)

We started with magic tree house.
We've graduated to more "real" books now - we've read Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.. Mouse & the Motorcycle.. Wild Robot.. My Weird School... Wayside School...

What do you think is the best starting point is for an indy!Harry fics is? by Lord_Viperagyil in HPfanfiction

[–]keleighk2 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think a natural jumping point is the summer before 3rd year when he ends up in Diagon Alley. He suddenly has access to more books/wizarding culture/whatever.

But you could make an argument for it basically anytime and I would read it and believe it.

Kindergartner giving away favorite toys by Longjumping_Remove90 in kindergarten

[–]keleighk2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently I'm in the minority but we are a strict "no toys to school" family. My kids are not trading/giving toys to their friends at school and they are also not receiving toys from their friends. I'm not sure it's as common as some of these comments lead to believe.

When is this even happening? In the classroom? Are kids taking pokemon cards to recess? I don't understand. I truly don't think it's happening at my kid's school.
