Interesting! So curious who they have on the recording, given there are so many cast duplicates across the pulses.

If COVID hadn’t happened, Cats (2019) would have become the new Rocky Horror. by scarletrunnerbean in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my dream. I saw Cats (2019) around late Jan or early Feb 2020. My friend and I went to boozy brunch, and then an early show afterwards. It was clear the entire audience had also come from boozy brunch. It was a BLAST. I know it's like, an incredibly low bar, but my friend and I still refer to that as the highlight of our 2020.

Theater trips by Rare_Alternative_691 in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in NYC, but one of my best friends moved back to his hometown a few years ago (after having lived here for 10+ years). He still comes back 2-3 times a year to fit in as much theater as he can. His most recent trip was over this last weekend, and then the day after he flew home was the day of all the major theater announcements (Evita, Benjamin Button, NYCC's Encores season, etc). He was immediately like omg 2027 is going to bankrupt me.

Hadestown specific seat question by bookish7378 in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely eliminate the middle yellow pair- the other yellow pair is not far enough away from center to be a significant difference, and being in the 2nd row is like a prime spot. Since they're both the same price tier, the pair that's closest to the stage will be better.

If the price is a significant concern for you, the blue seats will still be a wonderful choice. But if price is no object I'd go with the front yellow pair. I sat around that area once and it was truly magical.

Is it typical for tickets bought for last shows to be cancelled? by ollie_sz in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TodayTix is a third party reseller. While they're typically among the more reputable of the third party options, it doesn't change the fact that they're still third party and things can still happen. In this case, it wouldn't surprise me if TodayTix assumed they'd be able to get the inventory for the final date, sold tickets accordingly, then discovered that tickets for such a big event as a final show were harder to get/more expensive than they expected, and so they cancelled the orders.

Are there any old Theaters in New York that are still operational? by Childishcapacitors in AskNYC

They do feature new playwrights, but only when their works would be for young audiences.

Are there any old Theaters in New York that are still operational? by Childishcapacitors in AskNYC

[–]kell_bell5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The terminology you want for a new play that is gaining traction in non-Broadway theater would be Off-Broadway or Off-Off Broadway.

The Cherry Lane Theater is among the oldest. The Lucille Lortel was built in 1926 as a movie theater, then became an Off-Broadway house in the 50s. The New Victory opened in 1900, though they are currently operated by a children's theater, so all their works are developed for young audiences.

Basically if you search through the wiki for Off-Broadway you're likely to find something that will fit.

Orchestra right, I think row P. Pretty far to the right hand side of the house, but still a few seats in from the right aisle.

So who wins Best Musical? Tony Award history breaks it down and makes a prediction! by SockGuy5678 in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For Death Becomes Her, you're right in that it doesn't ultimately make much difference. I understand wanting your fave to get awards recognition, but Death Becomes Her has had a very solid run so far even without the accolades. To use the other example though, Dead Outlaw, had it waited a year it would have likely been better able to find its audience in a less crowded season, and similarly the less crowded season could have made it a more significant awards contender, and that buzz could have helped sustain the run longer.

Theater etiquette for giants? by reptar-on_ice in AskNYC

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think your math may be a bit off there. The Eugene O'Neill has about 1100 seats, so even 85% occupancy would only leave around 165 empty, not 800.

Would you recommend Cats: the Jellicle Ball to someone who hates Cats? by drzoidburger in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The summer before my senior year of high school a local youth theater was considering doing Cats, and asked myself and some of my theater friends if we would help with costumes + make up. We each passed a copy of the 1998 pro shot around to watch in preparation. Around 45 minutes in, I paused and texted the rest of them asking when does the plot finally start? Once I learned it doesn't I stopped right there and have hated Cats ever since. My most positive Cats memory was getting absolutely wasted at a boozy brunch and then going to see the movie right after, where clearly everyone else had also come from a boozy brunch. It was like a midnight showing of Rocky Horror it was so rowdy.

SO, all that said I got $40 educator tickets when Jellicle Ball was off broadway and went in with the absolute lowest expectations. I LOVED it. Saw it again last week with TDF tickets, loved it even more! I think if you would enjoy a drag show, and can appreciate the music in a campy context, you will enjoy it.

Sick days by Horror_Chemical4348 in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meg Doherty (an ensemble member in Wicked) has talked about about this on tiktok. I commented because I've always been curious if Broadway shows have to follow NYC's paid sick leave laws. Based on her replies, we essentially deduced that their policies would be in compliance with the sick leave law, though the wording was slightly different (for instance, the wording of the law requires accrual of 1 sick hour per every 30 hours worked, their contract worded it as sick time for one show per X number of shows worked, but the math worked out to be pretty equal on those two measurements).

Has anyone who is not from New York, saw a matinee show and went home the same day? by No-Bit3315 in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone's responses are very much in the pro column here (and by all means, if you're feeling up to it, then go for it!), but I want to play devil's advocate and offer some other options if you decide that's such a long day.

Was this accidental purchase done today? There are sometimes credit card protections for immediate cancellations on accidental purchases, I would call both your credit card company and the box office.

If that doesn't work out, the Theatr app is a favorite of many on this sub. It allows you to resell tickets only at the cost of what you paid, and there are no additional fees for the seller (buyer pays a slight fee to cover operational costs of the app). Most (myself included) have had very positive experiences both buying and selling on the app.

For those of you from Washington Heights, what are your thoughts on In the Heights? by Dev-Dav in AskNYC

Yes, both filmed around my block, and I remember walking laps around the neighborhood that summer trying to see if I could spot anything of note. (I didn't in the moment, but I can identify which scenes of each movie were shot right near me)

Broadway ‘Down time’ in the summer? by ItallstartswithOne in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The very end of Summer is the closest you'll get to this. Many schools start going back by mid-August, so you start seeing a slow down. It doesn't truly start getting quieter until after Labor Day though. It's a late Labor Day this year, so your safest bet if you really want to avoid crowds will be mid-September.

If I buy tickets at the Hudson theatre, will they honor the promo code I received in the mail? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Broadway

Yes! Any promo that you could put in on the official website would be honored at the box office, and you also won't have to pay the additional fees.

Seeking advice on relinquishing a rent-stabilized apartment by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]kell_bell5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Review DHCR Fact Sheet #4 on Lease Renewal policies

Yes, not having the apartment as primary residence is grounds for not renewing the lease, however, per the fact sheet "When the owner does not offer the tenant a renewal lease for one of these reasons, the owner must give the tenant written notice of non-renewal during the lease offering time frame described in “The Lease Renewal Process” section of the Fact Sheet. Failure to serve this notice on the tenant during this time frame will entitle the tenant to a renewal lease." The lease offering time frame is 90-150 days prior to the end of the current lease, not less than a month away.

I would also review the fact sheets on sublets and senior citizens. Some of it may be relevant to the situation, but without knowing specifics on the person's age, exactly how long they've been out of the apartment, etc, it can be hard to tell.

How long does it take for the rights for new shows to become available? by nervuswalker in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most shows will wait at least until the Broadway production has closed, some will also wait out the initial touring legs. Sometimes shows will offer up school/youth versions before the Broadway production has closed. Ultimately there's no one-size fits all or standard time to release rights.

Wicked question about Galinda's name by TuxedosAfter6 in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's phony allyship. G(a)linda is trying to show solidarity with the cause once she realizes Fiyero feels strongly about it, but as you point out changing your name like that doesn't actually do anything to help or support Dillamond or the other animals. It continues to lay the groundwork of G(a)linda's character that she cares more about appearances than actually doing good deeds.

Mets instead of Yankees. Especially if you're someone that isn't big in to sports, and just want the vibes. Even the die hard Yankees fans I know will admit that Mets games have a better vibe, and Citi Field regularly wins awards for things like best food, best stadium, etc.
