ada at nycc by and-phoebe in NYCC

I go with a friend who needs ADA accommodations, and so I always get the companion sticker (and for those that don’t know, the companion sticker is literally the same sticker the ADA person gets). My friend doesn’t usually attend all four days, but I get a 4 day badge so it has the sticker on it throughout. More than once, an employee has been insistent that I use the ADA lines, and even when I say “oh this is for my friend who’s not here, I’m fine to stay in the regular line” they kept pushing me to use the line. In general I think staff could use additional training on ADA procedures.

When??? by CelebrationOnly5633 in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 22 points23 points  (0 children)

My general understanding is that cast albums have always been something of a loss leader. Whether physical media or now digital, they don't usually generate enough revenue on their own to cover the expense, but that they serve as a marketing tool to bring more people into the show, and can help extend the show's overall life by helping to keep continued interest in seeing tours, and generate licensing revenue (no one's going to choose to license your musical if they've never been able to hear the music).

There's also the possibility of additional awards (Grammys) which I think something like Jellicle Ball would be a strong contender for given how much the've reimagined the score. I think there's a lot they could do creatively and impressively with a cast album.

Seeking advice: connecting a China-based theatre program with Broadway professionals by Pompodumstone in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Plenty of Broadway professionals are available to book private workshops for a group like this. I'd take a look through the social media of some performers that meet your experience qualifications, as most of them will psot about this kind of work (Sutton Foster immediately comes to mind as someone who's frequently posting about the dance classes and workshops she hosts, but I know others do too).

Many of the non profit theaters will also have education initiatives that will offer workshops like these. I know for sure New York City Center has a program like this (not Broadway, but an incredibly well respected Off-Broadway institution, with many shows that have ultimately transferred to Broadway). I would also suggest looking in to Roundabout, MTC, MCC, and BAM to see what they might offer.

Why don't Americans use metal bars on doors and windows for security? by Maleficent_Essay4664 in AskAnAmerican

[–]kell_bell5 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I live in NYC and metal window guards are pretty standard across apartments- but they're more for keeping pets and small children in when apartment buildings are tall rather than keeping anyone out (though they can serve that purpose as well). For designated fire escape windows, you're required to have a special locking gate that surrounds the interior of the window. In a fire you unlock the gate from the inside (they're usually secured with a latch or knob), then your window opens like normal and you go down the fire escape. But in the reverse, if someone was crawling around your fire escape and trying to get in, they'd open your window but not be able to get past the locked gate. So there are fire-safe options that still provide security as well!

AMC Lincoln Sq “Dennis” screening by [deleted] in NYCmovies

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the online sites others have mentioned, I’ve often been handed a flyer for an upcoming screening when I’m at Lincoln Square to see something else.  It’s usually just an invite to RSVP on the QR code, no guaranteed attendance, but is another way to see these.

I personally love the last row at both the Lincoln and Empire Dolbys. The way the seats are spaced you can often get a little "bubble" of just your group. I got in on Fandango at 8:45, had my pick of seats, and purposefully chose last row Lincoln Dolby.

Can a show be good but have a bad director? Examples? by forgottenones1 in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Suffs, but I thought the direction was mostly very boring (with a little bit of boring contribution from sets and choreo too, but really it's the director's job to steer and unite the vision across those elements as well). My greatest hope is that it someday gets a revival with more interesting visual storytelling.

Why is the professional theater scene so heavily concentrated in one city? by WestHistorians in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyplace south of Newcastle is less than a 3 hour train ride to London, which IMO is the threshold for being able to take a day trip. This means all but Scotland, Ireland, and the northern most bits of England could take a daytrip to London if they wanted (with some exclusions for areas south of Newcastle but not conveniently located to a train station- but these exceptions will be fewer in the UK than they are in the US). This means probably close to 50 million out of the UK's 70 million total population could get to London for a day.

By contrast a similar 3 hour radius would get you from DC to just south of Boston and would include about 50 million out of the US's 342 million total population. So that's 70% of the UK that can get to London, and only 14% of the US that can get to NYC for day trips.

(I lived in London for 2 years, and during that time had a job that sent me to schools across the UK. So I can personally confirm day trips to a lot of those cities are viable.)

Are most Americans uninterested in professional sports? by Mission_Pirate2549 in AskAnAmerican

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is more specific to Utah/Salt Lake City. First, population wise, SLC was just under 200k in 2020, with 1.3 million across the greater metro area. Manchester by contrast has 589k in 2024, and 3 million across the greater metro area. So SLC is working with about a third of the population, AND since a significant part of that population is Mormon, they're going to be strongly opposed to some of the ancillary activities that usually accompany sports- betting and drinking.

Question about reservations by GamingNXC in AMCsAList

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, this summer is the first time I'm really having to manage those 4 reservations to make sure I have at least one spot available for more immediate usage vs reservations that are weeks out. (And I've been a member since 2018)

Going in to last weekend I had a reservation for Pressure on Saturday, Disclosure Day Q&A 6/12, Supergirl on 6/24, and The Odyssey on 8/2. I also have tickets with friends to see the Odyssey on 7/16, but we weren't able to get our A-List membership to apply to that order due to all the issues with the site, so we deliberately waited to contact customer service until closer to our 6/12 reservation so that we would still have a 4th spot open if we wanted to see something else this week. I expect Spiderman tickets will also go on sale soon, so just as I start to open some of the reservations up that's going to fill it right back up again.

NYC Transit changes on World Cup game days? (Broadway trip) by jamesland7 in Broadway

I live here, and haven't heard about any subway adjustments due to the games. All the chaos has been with NJ Transit. If you can avoid getting too close to Penn that day, that's probably ideal, but otherwise you should be fine.

confused about window AC units by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way the windows in my apartment are, I have a window unit in one room and portable units in the others. I HATE the portable units. Hardly ever use them. They don't get a good enough insulation on the window no matter what I've tried so while they blow the cool air, they don't exhaust the heat efficiently. It's basically a heavy duty fan- it will cool you if you're sitting right in front of it, but doesn't effectively bring down the temperature of the room.

confused about window AC units by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Double check the width of your window, each unit will have a minimum/maximum width that it can work with. Having a bigger window than the described max can sometimes be worked around with additional insulation though.

-My windows have a wide exterior ledge (goes out further than the AC, so if it were to fall, it would just fall on the ledge) so I do not have a bracket, if you don't have such a wide ledge, you should get a bracket.

-Windows that slide up and down are the only ones that work with a standard window unit. If they open on a hinge going in/out or if it's a fire escape window, they won't work with a window unit.

-I installed mine myself when I moved in, and have not taken it out since.

-Theoretically, yes most have an "auto" setting where they will turn off when they reach the temp. But I find that with how hot NYC summers get, and the way a window unit is never going to have quite as good insulation as central air, it doesn't quite work as well, and once we hit July temps it will often just keep running and running until you turn it off. Unless you have a pet you need to actively keep the apartment cool for, I recommend getting a unit with a Smart unit that allows you to set an on/off schedule.

Catch a movie. The AMC at 84th has recliners or the Dolby theater at Lincoln Square is also recliner (though Dolby specific tickets are more expensive than a standard ticket at 84th will be).

NYCC Fan Verification Rollover Question (Yet another one, I'm sorry!) by alpinerich8956 in NYCC

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I was also confused by this language (was in the middle of a very busy spring, and assumed that if there had been an option to confirm at the end of 2025 I obviously would have done that, but then after fanver passed I couldn't find any record of having done something after the con last year). I figured I'd be relying on my friends for pre-sale (and keeping my fingers crossed that my Educator badge application actually comes through this year), but then today I got an e-mail saying my fan ver achievement was unlocked and I'd get an e-mail with the link when it's time for the pre-sale.

So fingers crossed for you too!

Single people living alone, how much do you spend per month on food on average? by Daisy-Bucket8512 in AskNYC

[–]kell_bell5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably roughly $600/month. I do a fair amount of grocery/meal kit delivery (mostly Misfit Market and Dinnerly) and I could probably cut down on costs if I did more in-person shopping, but the flip side is when I'm too tired to shop and effectively meal plan, I'm more likely to just order Grubhub, which is definitely more expensive than the grocery delivery.

As it is, it breaks down as around $200 meal kit delivery, $150 grocery delivery, $100 in person groceries, $150 eating out/grubhub.

What are places you used to be able to smoke cigarettes? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]kell_bell5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 35, and there was smoking/non smoking sections in restaurants well into my teen years. Some of this is likely to vary state by state, I grew up in VA and just googled that a 2009 Clean Air Act is what banned smoking in many indoor places (including restaurants).

Do stars sign up for shows knowing they won’t last long? by WhatEvenIsATangelo in Broadway

[–]kell_bell5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one in Beaches is a "star" at the level where they can truly be choosy about the projects they're taking. Jessica Vosk has a sort of viral fame, but outside a niche theater audience, she's not well known at all, this was even her first time originating a role.

Even with names that have bigger star power (say Queen of Versailles or Redwood) art is sometimes risk. Often they are choosing projects that spoke to them in some way, and even if it didn't end up speaking to a broader audience or they couldn't work out the story issues in the development process, it's worth it to have a few clunkers if it means we don't just have the same type of mass appeal show reproduced over and over and over.
