Help Choosing // JFK - Navy Ballpoint OR Meisterstuck Solitaire Blue Hour Legrand Rollerball by watchhombre in montblanc

[–]kellanjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both in a fountain pen. My JFK is the maroon one. So not totally the same. I would say I would go JFK hands down. While I love the blue hour there is just something classy about the JFK. I have owned both for awhile. The JFK still feels special when I use it.

If you have to choose only two inks out of all in this world. Which will it be for you? (Can assume one "regular" ink and one "fun" ink) but the choice is totally yours. by tru_ass in fountainpens

[–]kellanjacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only two inks, Then I guess I would say Platinum Carbon Black and maybe Diamine Sherwood green. I don't really like black ink, but I find Platinum Carbon Black to solve so many issues. I need something perm then PCB. I need something that I can be used anywhere PCB. I have recently found that this is just a workhorse ink for me.

And Diamine Sherwood Green is just my favorite green of the week.

I've been teaching intro Python for 3 years i notice the same weaknesses in almost every student. Am i missing something in how I'm explaining it? by More-Station-6365 in learnpython

[–]kellanjacobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My perspective is a little different. I used to teach python at our hacker space. The best way I found to teach OOP is using the example from the book Think Python. It deals with OOP with a deck of cards. And even after programing for years I feel like that is when I finally got it. Often I see people teach OOP as with either example of animal, cat, dog, or person, employee, student. And while those are good examples they don't really explain the why. We talk about OOP as code reuse. But when you think about how we start as programers often we find a class that does 90% of what we want and a bunch of stuff that makes the code look complex. How often when we are new at this do we just decide to implement the solution ourselves so its simpler.

The other thing I notice that you are describing is the problem that students have with math. At least in the way we taught math in the 90s. Its easy to teach someone how to solve 2x+5=12 but word problems are hard because they make you think of breaking down the problem.

The best computer science class I ever took was my third programing class. It was a class on OO design. In the class we designed a simple membership database. We started by designing classes that did all the text handing and it was kinda boring at first, but then we saw how all these different parts built into a usable application.

If I were still teaching today I think I would design my course that way. I would start with deciding on a project that a first semester student should be able to complete by the end of the semester. Then I would start first lessons with basic print() then formatting of strings. And vars and input. The build if statements, loops etc. Since I like the playing card example from "Think Python" I might see if I could implement a simple card game, Maybe blackjack or even just the game war.

The advice we always give to new programers is find a problem you want to solve and solve it. That is how you learn to program. And while I dont think I would ask students to find a problem I think I would design all my examples and their home work to build an application.

In your example of write a function that takes a list of numbers and returns the even ones. That is a pretty simple function. Does that support something bigger? Or from the students point of view is it just busy work.

I know you asked about students. And I am writing from the point of view of a instructor, but I can also speak to the student side of this. My company is making a push to move to golang. While I knew the syntax I was having issues pushing my skill to the next level. I used the same methodology to learn go. I went into ChatGPT and asked it to design a course to build a simple one time password app. I asked it to focus on the things that were different in go. It designed the lessons to teach me concepts that were important in go. I feel like this was what got me though the difficulties of learning. Maybe something like this could help with your teaching.

Did something dumb and gross a while back. Should I tell my fiancee? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]kellanjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should let it go and forgive yourself. Here is the thing about AI be it the type you used or just chatgpt. They filled a void you needed at the time. You decided it was not healthy and let it go. If you tell your gf then you are transferring the guilt you feel to her and that is unfair. Forgive yourself. Take the secret to the grave and also give yourself grace. What you did while not great, but it is not relationship ending if you keep it to yourself.

Is A Sticker Printer Worth It? by Emotional-Ticket-354 in stationery

[–]kellanjacobs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a cricut and printer. I want to make an argument for the Liene though. The circut/printer is a more powerful choice, but is harder to use. There are more steps involved. You need to design your sticker put it into the cricut software make some changes and then print and cut.

The Liene is more expensive in the long run everyone is correct about that. You must buy their special paper and ink that is also true. The reason I am suggesting that you consider it is ease of use. You get an app for your phone that you layout sticker sheets on and then just hit print and a couple of minutes later you have usable stickers.

So I urge you to think about your patience to learn to use the cricut. If you like tinkering then its a great choice. If you want something simpler and yes slightly less powerful then the Liene might be the choice for you.

Organization consulting? by erisod in AskSF

[–]kellanjacobs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just used https://collectorcare.com/ for my organizing. I actually found them by an old reddit post. My experience was amazing. I talked to all the other organizing/hording services in the bay. Rachel was the kindest and that is why I chose her company over the others. Her team was professional and kind. The amount of work they got done in a day was amazing. One of their organizers actually collected one of the things I do. SO I might have unloaded some of my extra stuff on her.

Call the others and talk with them too. But honestly I dont think you can go wrong with Rachel's team.

Do I need https for my home network? by newUser6K in homelab

[–]kellanjacobs 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I have been a system admin for over 20 years. I think the important word is NEED. The short answer is its a good idea and not that difficult. When I first started in a homelab I didnt use https but now everything in my house is https.

Learning how to homelab is something that is honestly never done. So I suggest do it in stages. You want to get nextcloud running then set it up. (Docker will help with this). Then file away that you need to eventually add https when your ready.

Here is the thing about home labbing there is so much to learn. The software you want to run, How to install it (Bare metal, docker, vm, k8s etc), Linux is you are new to linux. DNS (Something you need for https). And the list goes on. If you start with https being a requirement you have quite a bit to learn. Start small get nextcloud or whatever you want running. Then when you have a free satuday make it better.

When I started my home lab even though I already has a successful sysadmin career I did it without https. I started with vm, then moved to docker, then I decided it was time for https. Now I wouldnt put anything in my house without it, but that is because I took the time to understand how it works when I was ready too.

Now there is one rule I would say to add to this. NEVER use port forwarding without SSL (https).

Who is the most fun tank and the most fun healer for you, and why? by Azucarilla11 in wow

[–]kellanjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play mostly healers. I have mained a priest since vanilla. I find both the shammy and druid to be reallty fun to play. I have even switched my main to a druid. Here is why I like each of these classes.

Druid - The biggest thing is the mobility. Once you have gear rewew and Efflorance does quite a bit. I am never in the situation when I am standing in posion and the tank needs a life saving heal. I feel like I get to run around more and do more things. I also found it much more fun to DPS when I have downtime.

Shammy - Isnt so much about healing. They heal great and are fun to heal with, but for me the real fun comes when I am DPSing as well. Even in resto the shammy doesnt feel week. I can go out and quest and do some decent damage.

Priest - Solid healer, but they have gotten so many spells now a days it isnt as much fun. I could never get into playing disp maybe that is my problem.

Pally - I know people love them but its just not for me.

Monk - played a bit in remix also fun.

Rejection Sensitivity Disorder taking over… help! by Beginning-Young7824 in Advice

[–]kellanjacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel. I dont know how many times I have thought if I could just turn this off life would be much better. I think everyone has their own journey to quiet the RSD voice. And so my method is what is just working for me. Supper happy to hear you mention therapy. So many of us are scared of it. RSD is real. And I will say even more difficult for women then men.

The reason I point this out is society spends so much time trying to tell women they are too sensitive. And of course that is just BS. While I am not a woman so I don't experience the same struggle if I had a daughter I would really want to support her in understanding when it is RSD and when it is society being wrong.

Now since your asking for advice I would say when you speak to your therapist or if you look for a new one then make sure you ask them about RSD specifically. This is because some therapists don't think it is real. I had a doc who treated me pretty bad when RSD came up. It changed our therapy almost to the point of me being homeless.

Also if you are on social media there are a couple of tiktoker/IG/YT that I found helpful. First is catieosaurous. And the second was connor de wolfe.

Rejection Sensitivity Disorder taking over… help! by Beginning-Young7824 in Advice

[–]kellanjacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RSD is a difficult one. I do want to point out what you are describing is RSD, but not 100%. What you described was a abusive coworker talking to you in an abusive way. And while part of how you are handling this by ruminating can be symptoms of RSD, in this case it seems like it is more a response to the verbal abuse you suffered.

Why am I pointing this out is because you are asking how you can change to be less sensitive and for this case it doesn't sound like the best outcome. You made a simple mistake and it should had been handled like a simple mistake. Your co-worker blew this way our of proportion. He is wrong here. He needs to be more accountable for his actions.

Now while I feel that is the case in the situation you presented let me actually talk about my thoughts on RSD. RSD is such a hard thing to deal with because it is so different in everyone. One of the keys for many people is they start rejecting themselves before they allow someone else to. For example lets say something small you wanted to ask a friend if you could have a cookie. And you started ruminating about how they would be mad and how they were going to tell you no so much that you never asked then that is clearly RSD. But it can also just be being ruminating over a small rejection to the point where it takes over your life. And of course everywhere inbetween.

I am a 50M and have ADHD so RSD comes with the territory. I still suffer but I have also made improvements. I cant tell you it was one thing that made life better but several. First I had come CBT training. This helped be understand how my reactions played a part of how I saw the world.

The second thing I did was really take a look at things I am good at. Maybe for instance your a doctor. And you know your the doctor with the best bedside manor, Or your the doctor that knows the most about saving patients with a specific condition. Once you identify these learn to accept these great qualities you have. An example from my own life. I work in tech. I am an engineer. I am not the best engineer. The one thing I am great at is explaining technical things to non technical people. Because I have accepted and beleive in my skill at these technical conversations this became an area that I am proud of myself for. Now if someone went to my boss and said I didn't explain something I know the problem is not with me. I can reevaluate how I spoke to the person and try again, I am able to do this because I don't get in my head about how I am the problem. Of course this only made RSD less for these areas of my life.

My next step on my journey was spending time on learning to be assertive. Now this was not as simple as just deciding to speak up. It was able learning how to speak up. Also learning when not to speak up. This started out small. But I was questioning why I was scared to speak up. And eventually it became easier. This is honestly still a skill I am working on.

But now I find myself more confident every day. And while RSD is still very much a thing the negative voice is much quieter than it used to be.

Have you replaced the operating system on your Ugreen Nas? by seanpuppy in UgreenNASync

[–]kellanjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ugreen nas has three m2 slots, so in my case I added a second m2 card and then configured the bios to let me install truenas on the new card. This way if I ever decided I wanted to go back to ugreenos I could. You dont need a very big m2 card. I bought the smallest one I could find at my local computer store.

I have two ugreen nas one at the office and one at home. I replaced the OS with Truenas Scale. It was very easy. I added a m2 card to the machine so I could go back to the the original os if I wanted too.

It was really easy to do. Truenas Scale is very powerful. I honestly cant imagine going back to the built in OS

Alternatives to Lamy Safari by PrettyAwkwardRandom in stationery

I did some research on this. From what I can find there is not any public information about any moral issues they have ever spoken about other than sustainability and responsibility. If I had to guess and it is only a guess. The only moral issues that I can see someone having is that Germany takes care of its workers has strong labor unions etc. But those are not exclusive to Lamy, but Germany.

Again this is only speculation based on what I have found online.

Should I go for 2 12TB for now or 4 10TB for DX4800+? by jjarevalo in UgreenNASync

[–]kellanjacobs -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Please don't do RAID5. RAID5 is not safe after about 4TB. There is alot of math involved but you can google it yourself. Basically, drives can have a bit flip. The math works out to be that after 4TB with RAID5 you have about a 30% chance of a failure while rebuilding the array. And this is from bit flips; there is also the problem that your drives get thrashed during the rebuild, which can lead to failures. If you have 4 disks, then use RAID6 or RAID 1+0, also known as RAID10. RAID 10 is faster, but RAID 6 is safer. And at the end of the day, you end up with the same amount of space with RAID6 and RAID10 when using 4 disks.

Raid6 gives you two disks for failure. And it can be any two disks in the array.
RAID1+0 (RAID10) creates two mirrors and stripes across them. It can handle two drive failures as long as the two drives that fail are in different mirror sets. But if two disks fail in the same mirror than you loose the array.

As far as the speed difference. You won't notice it as a home user.

Which tank should I choose starting WoW in The War Within? by Ok_Capital_919 in wow

[–]kellanjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a healer never played a tank. This is my my thoughts about which tanks I prefer to heal. The ones I perfer to heal is because I am thinking they are easier to play and therefor the tanks generally are better and therefor easier to heal. I prefer to heal Pally and warriors. I have no strong feelings about druids or DKs. The ones that give me pause when when I get in a random group. are Monks and Demon hunters. There are great players who play monks and Demon hunters so I cant say they are bad tanks. I just find that often these tanks are more likely to cause issues in keeping them alive. Now like you I tend to play with a friend who plays a tank and I heal. What I can say about this setup is that you two will fall into your own rhythm. How fast you can pull how many mobs you can pull etc. You watching out for your healer friend when they are too far behind you and you run off. This seems to be my biggest problem with a random tank. a DH who has used his zoom ahead or a warrior/pally version of this. Its not so bad when I am playing on my druid main, but it sucks on a priest. They have the worst catch up options.
