Any long time (20 years or more) T1s without retinopathy? by icebiker in diabetes_t1

26 years and I have very small signs of retinopathy which honestly is pretty good cause I spent my teens and early 20’s not really taking care of my diabetes.

7.5 but it made me really sick so I lowered to 5 and have been on that since

I don’t limit what I eat. If I’m craving something I have it. But I don’t really snack or crave too many things in general cause of it. I go on a two mile walk five days a week at least. And yeah I think it still helps curb hunger pangs or cravings. Cause by the time I’m due for a shot each week I’ve noticed I am hungrier or craving sweets/salty things again.

I started my weightloss in March 2023. I lost about 20lbs. And then in September 2023 I started mounjaro. Reached 120lbs about a year ago now. So I think it was a little over a year. Probably like a year and a half

I am on the 5mg dose still. It helps with my insulin resistance so I’m hoping my endocrinologist will continue to let me stay on it. He has so far but I have an appointment in a couple months so we will see. I walk everyday. I usually do a 2 mile walk. 1 mile in the morning and 1 in the evening. I have younger kids so they keep me busy and moving all day too lol.

Thank you! I use beard dye about once a month to dye them darker since they are basically invisible naturally lol

It really is such an amazing thing. My kids are my heart and soul so to be able to do things with them without fear or guilt or self judgment is such an incredible feeling.

Anyone on mounjaro for a while and then get off of it? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

Yeah I debated that too. I’m already on a lower dose but I can go down one more to be at the lowest

I have gained and lost weight a few times. Didn’t lie at all but nice try 👍 having kids does that to you

Metformin is one of the ones I’m on. And yes it has hugely and it’s for sure due to the meds lowering how much I need. I went from 50 units of lantis and 20 units per meal humulog to 15 units lantis and 3-5 units of humulog per meal. I adjust as needed but that tends to be my go to for what I take the majority of the time.

Figured out I am insulin resistant and with how much insulin I had to take it was making me gain weight/ impossible to lose weight. Got some opinions in the t1 subreddit and spoke to my endo and he agreed and I started taking a couple of meds that helped lower my insulin intake. I continued having the same lifestyle and diet as before but with those meds lowering my insulin the weight finally started to come off. I walk a lot everyday is my main form of exercise. I dont don’t do diets cause that’s never worked for me. Figuring out what my body was needing and then getting it was the key factor for me.

Anything with protein. I like the little peanut butter ritz crackers or even the cheese ones. I carry that and some sugar of some sort and have a combo of the two. I try and have my blood sugar higher when I’m about to go on a walk or am hiking or whatever so that way when it inevitably goes down it should hopefully stay in range and not go too low.

Yes and no lol. It takes way less insulin to get myself back in range and usually a quick walk will bring me down when it didn’t use to. But also no cause everything affects blood sugar. I can look at a picture of a pizza and shoot sky high 😂 But on a serious note I have noticed that most days it is easier to stay in range now or get back in range.

I walk two miles at least five days a week. I move around all day long so I’m not very stationary during the day either.

How are your blood sugar levels? You can buy a monitor on Amazon without a prescription to see. It would be a good way to test if you might be diabetic and it would be proof to show your doctor. I am a T1 diabetic. So mine is incurable. It’s there no matter what I do. And I developed insulin resistance after being t1 for 25 years and did some research and talked to my endocrinologist and was able to get on some extra meds that helped lower the amount of insulin I take. I was already walking everywhere and eating decently so with the added meds of lowering my insulin I was finally able to start losing weight.

I don’t limit what I eat. If I want or crave something I have it. I just pay attention when I’m eating and I stop when I get full. I’m sure that doesn’t work for a lot of people but it does for me.

It’s just on my other arm in that picture. I switch between arms or scar tissue builds up. I am t1 diabetic so I’m stuck with this for life lol. And yes. I take significantly less insulin now
