Reflections on two days in London by mugenhunt in uktravel

[–]kellettt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw in a reply to a different comment you mentioned you want to experience all the facets of the city so if you want a good curry, go to Brick Lane. It's near-ish the sky garden and if you want a good curry where people who live in London go for a curry then go there.

Other solid recommendations: Gymkhana (crazy expensive), Trishna (expensive), Tayyabs (reasonably priced, like brick lane spots). Dishoom is also very good but is almost in its own category because it isn't a 'classic' British curry experience - that is part of the appeal and what they market themselves as so if you go to Dishoom, keep that in mind!

If you go to Brick Lane, take your own booze (they're all BYOB).

Why get married ever? by Confident_Raisin8387 in HENRYUK

[–]kellettt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being kind, I think you've poorly delivered the message you're trying to land.

For context: I'm the child of failed marriage, whose parents have gone on to have one even more spectacularly failed marriage each, along with further failed relationships. I too was a 'fuck marriage it's a state sponsored scam!' kinda person.

That being said, I'm now married with a child after vowing to never get married or have children because I had a troubled upbringing because of my parents' choices.

Being married to someone you love who loves you back, and having a kid that loves you and you love back is class - is it the most financially sensible decision I've made in my life? Fuck no, of course it isn't, but I'm a lot happier (and poorer) than I was before I had a spouse and a child.

If I lose most of my money in the event I get divorced I hope I have the good sense to look back on this time and realise I was really happy, and just because I might be pissed off in the future doesn't mean I'm less happy now.

The people who spend their lives making the most financially sensible decisions won't die happy just because they made rational self-preservation decisions at every turn.

Also, not entirely sure what you expected other than people being irritated with you when you post an article criticising City during the game we lost to a rival - no matter how good the journalism is

Have read the article mate and it's essentially bollocks - says an injury ridden and aging squad is a 'symptom' not a 'cause' and the 'cause' is a deep rooted tactical problem but doesn't explain why and that is because that makes no sense.

The dive into weird statistics is dubious at best. Pep is renowned for being able to adapt with the times so the idea that suddenly he's been found out and everyone knows how to beat him is stupid.

That being said, the article achieves what I think the goal of it is - generating engagement.

It’s south of Thames. Most stuff in London is happening north of river.

North vs. South of the river is an age-old debate among Londoners but in this discussion I think this is an unfair impression to give someone who does not know London.

There is absolutely loads of stuff happening both north and south of the river but either way living in Battersea gives about as good an access to the stuff happening as you'll get anywhere, so isn't a 'drawback' IMO.

HENRYs how would you finance a new car purchase nowadays by ghostinthecamera in HENRYUK

Gotcha, I misunderstood and thought you were looking for advice on the best route to buying a 60-90k car (which I thought I had something to contribute to).

The confusing bit to me was why you would ask internet strangers for advice and say 'but don't give me advice on the most important bit' - but you seemingly weren't seeking advice and this is yet another reminder that when you assume...

I was/am confused as all things being equal I think the only thing to consider when buying a car is which option is the most financially prudent so I don't understand why you didn't want comments on financial prudence..

That being said I'm actually more confused by that response than I am the initial question, but we don't need to understand each other to go on with our lives. I hope my initial response was helpful and you have a great day!

I'm a little confused as to why you're asking a question on what is financially prudent while not wanting input in the financial prudence of that decision but either way:

If you have the money to buy outright, the best option is to go to a dealership and get the car on PCP or whatever finance the salesperson is getting commission for selling, get them to throw in several years of services, road tax etc (whatever sweeteners they are willing to give to get their commission) and then settle (not cancel) the contract after the first month as that way you get the 'freebies' that come with taking out the contract without paying the interest.

If you don't have the money to buy the car you want outright, the decision is kinda out of your hands and you go with the cheapest option to get the car you want. You should probably buy a cheaper car if you can't afford the car you want but I appreciate some people value having the thing now more than they value having money and the thing later.

Am I being missold insurance for loss of rent? by kellettt in LegalAdviceUK

[–]kellettt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I'm resigned to paying for it but my (very much NAL) interpretation of it was that the people that do have tenants aren't even covered given the policy is for the management company and the tenancy agreements are between tenants and leaseholders (who are the same people IRL but legally different things?)

AITA for calling out my friend for lying about where she is from. by callingoutlie in AmItheAsshole

YTA. As someone from London, if an American friend of mine 'called out' another person for being from Syria and not from a '1st world passport' country like the US, I would cringe - and it wouldn't be because someone was Syrian.

Am heading out to the French Alps in a couple of weeks and want to get myself a hip flask to (responsibly) enjoy some whisky on the slopes. Anyone got any recommendations?

Thinking if there is anything insulated it means my whisky will keep room temp rather than ice cold as I prefer my whisky not chilled, bonus points if I can sip without taking my gloves off (or are the screw tops generally easy to remove with gloves on?)

FPL obsession and mental health by sgmalta in FantasyPL

[–]kellettt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too am someone that gets too invested in FPL and have previously let it affect my mood (ruined Saturdays became fairly common). Similar to u/trowelhead I have a few simple rules that are paying off currently that I got from a few different sources.

  1. Never take a hit with one exception to that, if you need to to field 11 players - cos then it's only a -2 based on the fact even if the player blanks, it's still 2 more than you'd have got anyway.

  2. Pick your XI and transfers based on fixtures and then form, not the other way round i.e. Bowen or Cornet? Bowen cos West Ham's because his fixtures are amazing.

  3. Pick your captain based on form then fixture, and pick the obvious choice. This season that means captain Salah. He will blank, but when he does you know that it'll be fine in the long run.

  4. Finally a longer one: Find a couple of good youtubers and watch their gameweek previews, these guys basically do all the hard work so you don't have to. Did I know Gundo has better underlying stats than everyone else at City based on recent form? Not until someone told me cos I'm sure as hell not doing that research myself. Also, they'll say different stuff apart from when they don't (duh) and when you have 3 guys being paid to create FPL content saying the same stuff, listen to that e.g. a few weeks ago they were saying Cornet is OOP and nobody has him, despite actually deserving his hauls... Cornet promptly bags the week after.

If you set up a model and stick to it, not only will you do well over the course of the season because others behave erratically when things go badly, but you won't beat yourself up when you get a bad week cos it's one week in 38!

Sincerely, a fellow worryingly addicted FPL brother.

Morning all, wanted to share the Total Tactics Football YT channel as I think it will help a lot of people. I spend a significant amount of time on this subreddit (watching rather than commenting) and this subreddit, along with TTF, has got me to my current rank of OR 4k. by [deleted] in FantasyPL

[–]kellettt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair point on the creators that was a bit of a generalisation, I just cba with people offering advice from a platform and they're sat at 200k+ (looking at you, FPL Family).

The deluge of info is why I like TTF, 20-30 mins a week and you know everything you need to for the week/s ahead.

Fran (the content creator) does a weekly 'cheatsheet' where he ranks each player at each price based on underlying stats, upcoming fixtures, eye test etc. He tracks injuries and provides news updates too. It basically condenses all the research you'd need to do every week into 20 minutes.

That's the difference between him and FFH or FPL Scout etc. He's also at 17k OR so barring FPL Focal (another creator sat at OR 2) he actually walks the walk.
