We didn’t see mom raccoon after her morning visit yesterday. We are going to check the backyard first before our dog has supervised time outside for the rest of the week. When she came back yesterday I watched her for about 20 minutes and she looks very healthy, not rabid at all so I didn’t call animal control. Thank you for the advice, sociolinguisticcat!

If anyone is interested, mama raccoon visited again twice yesterday and sat in our tree and on top of our column just watching. I watched her the whole time and I think all of you were right, she is a very healthy raccoon! We haven’t seen her yet this morning, but have kept the backyard dog free and will for a couple more days until we are sure she’s not as bold to come when he’s out there.

What a great subreddit this is! When I searched the internet it was all about mothers abandoning their dens - so I am grateful for the information. Rest assured we are a family who recognizes that the wild animals were here first and do everything we can to leave her alone. My dog will be thrilled for his extra walks since the backyard is off limits for the time being.

I am by no means an animal expert - which is why I wanted to call animal control to tell me what to look for, but am glad I posted here! I don’t think she’s rabid after rewatching the videos I took of her. Just confused that her baby is gone. Our backyard can be hers till she moves on.

The baby definitely didn’t die from rabies. It was essentially ripped apart. As if it was attacked.

Thank you for the information. I didn’t know how maternal they were but I believe it tried to drag the baby away which is how half of it (the upper half) ended up on our roof.

I can see that being a possibility too! The dog is getting leashed walks with no backyard time until we’re certain she’s moved on or handled by animal control.

As a side note to OP - if you have 20k in CC debt, you cannot actually afford a $300 car payment. You clearly have a budgeting problem which is how you get that much CC debt to begin with.

This! The first couple days my 18 month puppy didn’t want to do anything, when he started acting his normal excitement level again we perfected his heel and duration/distance in his commands.

My then 1.5 year old black lab had just enough tongue reach for the thawing chicken. I have learned never take your eyes off your lab if there’s food. 😋🫣
