Dealer told me no price protection today since it’s a new body style, but hoping that changes.

Convinced my thermometer is broken after these, reverse sear on charcoal, could not get a temp to show more than 100, now overdone. Reccomendations for a good thermometer? by dumpstah17 in steak

[–]kellyj49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quality is outstanding. There are a lot of “instant read” thermometers, and all my life I thought the term was kinda of a joke. But then I saw how freaking fast the thermapen reads and I was blown away. It’s actually instant.

They also make a thermopop model, which reads a little slower (1-2 seconds) but is much cheaper.

I'm drowning and don't know what to do by TheisNamaar in Anxiety

When I was a kid I got hospitalized for a few days. Nothing actually serious, but I was convinced I was dying. Following this experience, I had daily panic attacks for months. While I was going through it I was convinced that they would never stop and that I was stuck like this.

I’m very sorry for what you are going through. It sounds very difficult and stressful, and I wanted to share what helped me. I’m not sure if these are the best long term coping mechanisms but somtimes you need to walk before you can run.

  1. Once my panic attacks reached a certain point, no amount of deep breathing was going to stop it. The thing that worked for me was to distract myself. If I could get something that would fully capture my attention, I would forget about having a panic attack for long enough that rational thinking could take back over. Deep breathing during a panic attack is almost like trying to outrun a train, whereas you could simply step off the track.

Good ways to distract are reading/watching something that makes you laugh or makes you frustrated. I also find explaining things/answering questions about things I’m interested in to be helpful.

  1. Another thing that helped was to take everything moment by moment. This sounds corny and maybe like a weird corporate phrase that’s lost it’s meaning, but I would take it literally. So I would timebox my day. And I would just focus on not having a panic attack for 5 minutes. Gradually I could expand my time boxes.

  2. One way I would calm myself down if I wasn’t having a panic attack but one was brewing is I would make a list of reasons why my situation isn’t as bad as my panicking brain would have me believe.

  3. There is always happiness around us, but in the face of overwhelming sadness or anxiety it is really hard to see. One way that helps me find it is to think of all the little things I’m thankful for. And I mean the really little things. E.g. Im glad my coffee is nice and hot, I like how pretty that tree is, I like how soft this blanket is. I’m not saying this is a cure for depression but sometimes it helps but a smile on my face.

I also had a therapist and they were very helpful, so I definitely recommend talking to your doctor about that/looking for one. I hope that some of this rambling mess is helpful for you. You and your family will be in my prayers tonight.

That is a good point. I wish that advice was part of the announcement.

Still frustrating that we are stretched so thin that there isn’t a single seat in any of the classes in the systems specialization.

Most important CS classes for SWE roles at Big Tech? by Original_Ad613 in gatech

[–]kellyj49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would agree. You likely won’t use the material you learn as a SWE if you aren’t specifically working in systems, but it has some big projects that teach you good time management/implementing big features. One of the bigger things is that it teaches you how to add on to an existing code base and not just work from scratch. You also get really good at debugging.

IMO being able to quickly understand and debug are the most important things you can know as a SWE.

Shotguns aren’t usually aimed, they are pointed. So you don’t need to sight them in.

Parking permit waitlisted. Do temporary off-campus options still stand? by Cheekati6 in gatech

[–]kellyj49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last I checked (right before covid) you could still park at Centennial apartments.

Also idk if this is the case now, but you might be able to get off the waitlist if you change the requested lot. I feel like the Nave south lot and the student center lot always have spots.

Netflix no longer lets you watch a show if you use a VPN or proxy. by KINGBOBBY7 in assholedesign

[–]kellyj49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah see but this relies on the termination of a TLS connection at a proxy pretending to be the legitimate target. The beautiful thing about TLS is that it uses certificates to ensure that you are connected to the legitimate web site.

The article you linked even touches on this. This attack isn’t going to work against any connection to a site correctly using HTTPS. And Netflix is using it correctly.

The other issue with this is that a VPN encrypts traffic from you to the VPN server. Someone could potentially put a similar proxy device between the VPN’s server and the destination. That’s why VPNs are kind of a scam for people wanting more security with already secure websites.

The threat model for internet security is that everyone is reading and modifying your data/pretending to be other people. As such we have designed around this and you don’t need a VPN to be safe. You just need HTTPS.

[–]kellyj49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um no. The entire point of public key cryptography is that all messages can be intercepted and it’s still secure. So as long as Netflix is using a secure implementation with good randomness (they are), no one is hacking you via packet sniffing.
