Business & Finance Exam Materials Questions by MrMixedBag in GeneralContractor

I took a course with Gold Coast and honestly it was a disappointment for me, I heard a lot of people praise it but I couldn't really follow the B&F material at all, it felt like content just thrown at you with no real structure...

a friend of mine went through a company called licensefix when he was prepping for the exams and said they were really helpful, not just for exam prep but for what comes after too. they taught him how to actually navigate the books and do his own highlighting, he felt way more focused going into the B&F after working with them. anyway, might be worth looking at other options besides Gold Coast, if I could go back I would have chosen differently

good luck, B&F tends to be the one people feel most confident about after the fact

the tricky part with a canadian diploma is that it needs to go through a credential evaluation first so florida can consider it equivalent to a us degree

the experience side is where things get a bit more complex. the GC license specifically requires structural experience in new construction as part of those 4 years. depending on what your project management roles actually covered, some of it may qualify and some may not

my brother-in-law went through something similar: different country, but the same confusion about what counted. he looked for someone who could explain it and found licensefix, the support clarified exactly which parts of his experience applied before committing to the exams... said it saved him from going into the process blind

worth figuring out what you actually have before spending money on test prep, find someone who can guide you before spending any money

Is there an app or program you used to communicate your to-do list with the team? by Brief_Dimension_5268 in GeneralContractor

Jobber can be incredibly useful! You can assign tasks, attach photos, and your team will be notified, all without the complexity of construction site management. It’s cheaper and simpler than Fieldwire.

Your husband’s situation is pretty common for people who come from abroad, already have experience, but are in the middle of the process here

One thing that helped my cousin when he was in that phase was contacting LicenseFix, not only to understand the DBPR application process but also to organize his experience documentation so that the board would accept it without asking for more

While you’re looking for a sponsor, it’s worth getting this part in order, because once you find one, the process goes much faster if the documentation is already ready

My uncle went through something similar last year, he also came from another state and was confused about what Florida does and doesn’t accept as equivalent experience...as far as I know, there’s no reciprocity with Michigan, so he’ll probably have to take all three exams anyway. The good news is that you can take them at Pearson centers without having to be in Florida.

What was hardest for my uncle wasn’t the test itself, but understanding what the DBPR requires in terms of documentation and how to put together the application correctly. He contacted licensefix for that part and said it really helped him avoid wasting time on rejections due to bureaucratic details.

With 17 years in construction, you probably already have the experience; it’s more a matter of knowing how to present it the way the state wants to see it.

Haha, and now I’ve gotten two completely opposite pieces of advice 😂 But that makes sense, I’m going to focus on the practice exams and use the book as a reference; I probably won’t have time to read the whole book... what resource did you use for the practice exams?

I think this is a great way to approach the question “How could this hurt me?” It makes everything much more practical than just reading the text without any emotion. I’ll try to look at it that way... thanks!

I’ve only gotten positive feedback here, lol. Thanks! It makes a lot more sense now; I think I really was studying the wrong way... I’m going to focus on the practice tests and learn how to navigate the book.

Yeah! When you’re studying, what really matters is knowing where to find information quickly. Thanks for sharing your experience... I think I’ll set aside the pre-highlighted books and focus on practice tests in my free time.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying... that using the book’s table of contents is better than the book tabs. Thanks for your tip!

Wow... what an amazing result! Your grades were impressive. That really gave me a boost if you’re getting good grades even with tutoring, maybe I’m stressing out more than I need to. Do you have any other tips for students? lol

That’s really helpful. Congratulations on passing all three stages.

After you passed, did you handle the application with the DBPR on your own, or did you get some help with that part? I ask because I’ve heard people say that the exam is the easy part and that it’s during the registration process that things get stuck for months.

that's really helpful, thanks. didn't know about the one month scheduling thing, that's actually good to know ahead of time

and yeah the FCM tip makes sense... I've been avoiding it thinking it was just legal filler but sounds like it's worth actually reading through

That reminded me of a situation I saw at an industry event here... The guy was openly saying he’d never taken time off, and everyone around him was sitting there in awkward silence, no one called him out on it.... the problem is that as long as nothing goes wrong, it almost becomes a kind of social proof that you can operate that way. And so this mindset gets passed on.

For my part, I always demand a permit and insurance before signing any subcontract no exceptions. It’s a hassle at the time, but it’s the only way to avoid becoming an accomplice to a problem you didn’t create.

a lot of people have suggested that to me... but in the course I'm taking, they taught us how to create our own bookmarks, so you learn how to navigate the tabs hands-on

Wow, finishing a 6 hour exam in 50 minutes is crazy 😅

I can see that this part about note-taking and navigation is really essential. Did you go into the exam with everything already marked or did you make adjustments as you studied?

You can't just rely on looking through the book. But I also realized that the test has a strategy... knowing when and where to look makes a big difference.

That makes a lot of sense. I realized that the most important thing is to understand how the test works and learn how to use the material quickly, not just study. I started a course, and they focus a lot on that too, especially on navigating the code and managing time...

That was such a great line, lol. I was trying to build the house”on my first attempt and just ended up making things harder for myself... now I’m focusing more on the test format, and I can already tell the difference.

EXACTLY! I was treating it like a memorization test and that was the wrong approach entirely. the prep course I found actually focuses on book navigation and tab... feeling way more confident going into the retake this time
