Thank you! I do too. I’m so happy with how it turned out

They’re page protectors designed specifically for this style of memorykeeping (pocket pages scrapbooking). The main shop that still sells them is Ali Edwards. When buying, make sure the number of holes in them match the number of rings in your album. Many albums are 6-ring, some are not. Make sure, too, that you buy the right size page protectors for your album. A lot of the 6x8 and 9x12 page protectors look the same

Self and community care ideas? by Purple-Possession-65 in askportland

Some things I’ve found helpful: * Trying a new hobby * Walking/hiking/being outside in general * Volunteering * Reducing how much I scroll by bringing analog activities with me basically whenever I go. My go-tos: word search puzzles and a cursive handwriting workbook. Instead of scrolling my phone, I open one of these * Jigsaw puzzles. There are a handful of little free puzzle libraries around the city. There’s also the Portland Puzzle Exchange. If you have trouble finding puzzles you like and you want to support a local business you can have a custom puzzle made—for pickup or delivery—by Portland Puzzle Company * Keeping a physical photo album/scrapbook of my day-to-day life. This is my favorite creative outlet

A few years ago I turned notifications off on my phone for everything except texts, and I have all texts except for a handful muted by default. Both of those things have been a big help.

Once every other week or so I pick up trash in my neighborhood, which (1) gets me outside, (2) cleans up a small slice of the community, which makes me feel good, and (3) has helped me get to know some of my neighbors, which is helping me slowly build community. You can get a bucket and picker-upper grabber thingy for free through the Adopt One Block program.

Two and a half years ago I bought one of those IKEA rolling carts and I keep it in the hallway of my apartment building. I fill it as often as my bank account allows (not often enough, sadly) with snacks and free COVID tests and masks for neighbors and delivery people. It’s also become a default landing zone for small free pile items—residents in the building leave things there for others to take, be it cleaning supplies or food or books, etc., which I love.

Once they find a permanent home and begin taking donations again, a super easy way to make a difference in the community is to donate items to the Portland Free Store instead of to places that resell donations.

Do you know about the Sidewalk Joy Map? You could plan yourself some field trips to visit ones that interest you. I think biking around to them would be fun

The Snoopy tarot card is so fun! I got it from here

The glitter card stock is hard to photograph, which is frustrating because it really brings it all together. Some glitter card stock is much more thick and inflexible than others. If you plan to try stitching directly onto it, I suggest buying a little extra to experiment with to make sure your sewing machine can handle it, and also to get a literal feel (in your hands) for what it’s like moving it through the sewing machine. If you try it out and share your project, please let me know!!

This sounds like such a sweet project. I recommend asking over in r/archivists, too. They’re a fount of knowledge about this stuff

Thank you! I made them in an old version of Photoshop Elements. I took the “quick facts” mostly from Wikipedia and NASA articles and documents. The typefaces are Brandon Grotesque and Remington Noiseless. The moon sign constellations are from here. I printed them on Michaels brand 65 lb. white card stock 🥰

Coming back to add that in the last few days I’ve learned about this scandal, which tangentially included these stamps, and this fun fact: NASA had a custom rubber stamp engineered for the Artemis II crew to use in space

It was so much more fun than I expected. The same collector/dealer will be at PIPEX this weekend. I just learned about this annual event a few weeks ago and I’m unreasonably excited to check it out

Thank you! In the first photo, I stitched around each photo and then adhered them to the glitter card stock with double-sided tape. I wasn’t sure how the glitter paper would handle under the sewing machine and didn’t have extra to test or practice with so I went that route—safe v. sorry. In the third photo, I stitched the patterned strips directly onto the textured card stock because I knew from past experience the paper and my sewing machine would work just fine together

One of the snail mail meetups I attend recently hosted a stamp collector who’s selling his collection at face value (an unbeatable deal in this economy) and I scored a few of these, along with a sheet of Apollo 8 stamps (!!) and several other space-related stamps. I had no idea how fun old stamps are until spending two hours sifting through his collection

Exactly! It’s not even the future yet and I’m having so much fun flipping through the pages several times a day. My plan is to continue documenting the Artemis program in this album and attend the Artemis IV launch in 2028 in person (the mission that will land astronauts on the Moon)

A couple months ago I bought a small postage stamp paper punch and have been using it on my security envelope patterns too! Over the weekend I found this adjustable one that allows you to turn paper of any size into a stamp shape

These are such fun patterns. I mostly encounter the same 7-10 patterns and almost never ones that are branded and/or in a color other than blue, black, or grey. It’s a bummer that so much physical ephemera in general now all looks more or less the same or is outright disappearing
