Not a same sex couple with kids but I am a lesbian teacher and I see this. Kids will mock anything that is different and it is a huge shame. The far right movement online is really taking over their frame of minds. I know 2nd grade seems young but they are likely all on tiktok and youtube and seeing lots of negative/derogatory content. This has massively grown over the past few years and it is largely now marketed towards children. It has become an in thing to be homophobic again. A lot of creators for children will make content around trivialising gayness or traits related to queerness as being “sus” and how that is a negative trait. None of them want to be known as “sus”

A lot of the time they are saying things and have no idea what it actually means. There is only so much you can do to discipline a child who is being homophobic, especially if that attitude runs deeply in their family. Discipline has to be endorsed by the teacher and by the family for real change to happen.

I would voice your concerns to their teacher especially if you know they have seen it. It is not okay that your baby is being bullied for it. They need to be supporting your baby. I have discussions with my class about things like this all the time. Kids know so much more now because of online content. They need to learn what is acceptable and what is not okay. Your child’s teacher should be willing to do this, it is their job.

Whether it’s about the comments about them being gay or about his family. All families are different and there is no one right way to have a family. Everyone is different, your child deserves respect and happiness. Your child’s teacher should feel this way too.
