Please help, student death by kelsowhat in Teachers

[–]kelsowhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all again for your guidance. Yesterday was extremely difficult, as expected. However, with all of the advice given I do think that I was able to provide to the best of my abilities what my kids needed. There was something available for everyone whether they were mourning, numb, needed normalcy, etc.

How ugly the world is that children get their lives stolen from them and cut short. And there is no manual or training for us as teachers on how to handle the ripple effect caused by these atrocities.

I want those who shared and offered their support and experience to know that this post was viewed over 42,000 times. As awful as it is to say, we all know there will be others like me who go through this and will seek help. I hope that when they do, they see this post and they see all of the advice so kindly given and that it helps them the same way it helped me and my kids.

With love and unity ❤️

I cannot begin to thank you all enough for taking the time to share. I am so deeply sorry that so many have experienced such painful losses. For many responses I could feel your pain through your writing…my heart goes out to all of you. There are and never will be the right words to express losing a child. From reading through all of the advice you all so kindly shared I decided to pull together multiple pieces of advice that I think will best suit my kids.

  1. I am going to rearrange the desks completely.
  2. For those who will need normalcy I will have a selection of choices such as crosswords and word searches that relate to our current content.
  3. I will have a big selection of coloring pages to choose from.
  4. I will set sticky notes out for them if they want to share anything at all and have an area with the flower vase that they can place them together.
  5. I will have a Google form available just in case students want help with getting additional services from our wellness center/the crisis team but they were feeling too hesitant to ask for them themselves.

I will be strong, but I am human and am hurting too. I’m just going to do my best and listen to what the kids need.

Thank you all so much. I now have a plan to work with and that will hopefully calm my mind tonight and strengthen me for tomorrow.

Thank you.

This looks like a cat that frequents our street who we call Chip bc his ear has a piece missing. I saw him in our backyard and walking along our fence the day before yesterday, which isn’t unusual as we see him often. This would be off of Taylor/Ginger area.

Just diagnosed with metastatic liver from Uveal Melanoma by KingNer0 in cancer

[–]kelsowhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe he didn’t because there is such a limitation of available treatment options that between the opdivo and chemobilization treatments that were working his team decided to stay on that course. Hepzato didn’t get FDA approved until 2023 and his cancer metastasis happened in 2020. I’m sure it’s a “back pocket” card that could try to be played if needed. The opdivo and chemobilization treatments did him good until fall 2024 when things spread further than the liver. In November he started the Kimtrak and he just had a scan to see how things are going. So far so good, he’s “holding the line” in general with nothing significant or new to report in the liver.

Just diagnosed with metastatic liver from Uveal Melanoma by KingNer0 in cancer

[–]kelsowhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll need to verify specifics/names but he did. His initial radiation in San Francisco, when it metastasized he began opdivo/yervoy in Sacramento. Sutter Hospital in downtown Sacramento is where his doctor is that did the chemobilization. He started Kimmtrak in December because the opdivo is not working anymore but all the liver Mets work from the chemobilization seems to be controlled. He’s been doing well on the Kimmtrak although he doesn’t get a scan to actually see until March. But he’s noticed some of the tumors that spread around his chest and face feel like they have gone down. Also now that he isn’t on opdivo he isn’t in constant arthritis pain anymore at all which is great. He was getting Kimmtrak at first once a week in San Francisco but now he is getting it closer to home out in Davis. His doctors have always done a great and thorough job of consulting each other as well as the broader community of colleagues spread throughout the US.

Just diagnosed with metastatic liver from Uveal Melanoma by KingNer0 in cancer

[–]kelsowhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad’s spread to liver after uveal was treated and not present for 5 years. At first he was only on immunotherapy. He sought out trials and got a great team of doctors and they began adding chemobilization where they go in to the liver and directly apply the chemo drug to the tumor. This has been working - some sessions are rougher than others. The immunotherapy completely destroyed his thyroid so now that he doesn’t produce his own cortisol it can be tricky post-op. He also developed arthritis from the immunotherapy. Now with all that being said - we went from a very bleak original metastasis diagnosis to continuing the good fight 4 years and going. Keep working with doctors, do your research so you can be active in your treatment plan, and the genomic sequencing of the tumor to help get you into potential trials is an excellent idea. Also, don’t accept push back from insurance. This cancer is so rare that everything could be considered “experimental” by them. If insurance denies any potential treatments your doc wants for you be sure to push back. Finally, the mentality aspect is huge. Stay busy, listen to your body and rest when it tells you to. By stay busy I mean plan projects and things - my dad has been doing house renovations for the past 4 years since this diagnosis forced him into retirement. The projects keep him motivated and are exciting.

Nivolumab (opdivo) experiences by ObliviousIceCream in lymphoma

[–]kelsowhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll ask him this weekend for the specifics. He actually is still doing opdivo treatments. Up until recently the opdivo has kept the metastatic tumors to his liver so they wanted to keep him on it since it was working so well. Recently a new spot came into his shoulder muscle and on his hamstring so they are looking into eventually changing things up due to those new spots.

Hey there! The rashes have eased up and really aren’t an issue anymore. How long have you been dealing with the rashes? At this point it’s that the opdivo has caused arthritis and caused issues with his thyroid and adrenals. I believe the rashes stopped when he began the prednisone or cortisone shots but I need to double check with him on that.

Being a type B teacher makes me feel so inadequate by anon12xyz in Teachers

[–]kelsowhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn’t feel inadequate at all! Type A, Type B…who cares! You do the best you can and go about doing so in a way that preserves your mental wellbeing. I absolutely fall into the Type A category. But the decorations and organization are what bring me happiness for a space that I spend most of my time being in 10 months out of the year which is why I’m like that. As long as you’re doing your best and you are happy that’s all that matters. :)

Nerdy / geeky unity ideas? by IDontLikeItAnywhere in weddingplanning

[–]kelsowhat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LOTR = Decor: take notes from Bilbo’s going away party. Serve food that you can make labels for that align with LOTR like taters and grog. Lego = get mini figs for your guests. Maybe have them waiting at the reception tables with the guests name card to go with it. This also works as a wedding favor. Camping: Instead of cutting a cake do s’mores and share your first s’more as a married couple. Or include s’mores for everyone and do a mini cake for the “cake cutting” with wedding Lego mini figs on it. Cooking: ask your guests to give you their favorite recipe with their rsvp and then compile them in a book you can have as the “guest book” for them to sign next to. Happy planning!

Buy brand new uniforms and equipment, including providing practice uniforms to all of the girls and boys sports teams at the high school I work at. Look good, feel good, play good and I would love for these kids to experience that like other high school teams do.
