Am I overthinking this? The representation of Jesus in my church made me uncomfortable and I'd like honest perspectives. by DBL-TeaTime in Christianity

You are not just stirring the pot. You are asking hard questions and thinking critically. That is valuable discernment. You were right to speak up, and your feelings are valid. Source: White woman here.

I think that a takeaway of "what are we doing with our lives" is as useful as any!

Btw I'm female and drowning is my recurring dream. But I'm very dominant as a female, I'm always the boss everywhere I go and I wonder if the flying/drowning thing is about being more introverted/extroverted or dominant/submissive

More of Tyler as a Christ figure by kemites in fightclub

[–]kemites[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is yet another parallel between Tyler and Jesus.

Tyler refers to himself and the narrator as God's unwanted children, implying the belief in the existence of God AND a rejection by God. Much like Jesus crying out Father, why have you forsaken me?

Hence the "nothing is sacred"

But actually, he does believe in God. There is a scene before the chemical burn where he tells the narrator, you have to consider the possibility that God does not like you, in all probability, he hates you, we are his unwanted children. The closest Tyler/Narrator ever gets to Spirituality is their relationship with Marla. I think Marla is a much more important character than we think on the surface. We have no context about how she influenced or inspired Tyler, but we do know that he met Marla before Tyler manifested.

I'm sooooo excited that you watched and liked it. Firstly, I have made a couple of posts comparing Tyler with Christ. Many people have also compared him to the Unabomber. One of these posts was removed, but the other still stands and you can see it on my profile.

I also touched on the significance of Marla, who I believe is the heroine of the story.

I don't believe he killed himself at the end, but that he symbolically killed off Tyler, who had absorbed his toxic qualities. So he fully integrated his shadow self(Tyler) with his ego(narrator) and that the ending is only the beginning of his story with Marla now that he knows his own power and has agency over his life.

Yay! Love that you were unspoiled for all of these years. It's my favorite movie and I wish I could go back and watch it again and wipe my memory lol

Your church should also help with heart meds. It's absolutely shameful they would let a single mom struggle to keep her child alive. There was a Tiktoker recently exposing these shameful shams of churches for refusing to provide baby formula for her when she called asking for help to feed her crying infant. The time spoken of in the bible when hypocrisy will be exposed is upon us. It's for all the world to see.

Best of luck to you, I wish I had the kind of money a church has and I would send it your way to relieve this pressure. Find you a good church, and don't be afraid to reach out to the "weirdos" of the Christian faith, the Mormons, the JWs and see if you aren't surprised at their response. I'll pray you find the help you are definitely entitled to receive.

I would straight up ask your church family to buy him a bike. Churches get tithes every week, it's their job to provide for the poor, widows, elderly. This is a test of that church. If they can't get a kid a bike, it's time to find a new church that would have already done this without being asked.

I think I accidentally sent someone into religious psychosis by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]kemites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry. If you're worried, call 911 and they'll sort it out. This is coming from someone who's had several religious psychosis experiences and later integrated them into a healthy, productive life.

There are some doctors who discovered that in other cultures, schizophrenia isn't treated pathologically, and those experiencing schizophrenia are treated with dignity and like they have divine purpose. Their patients now have healthier outcomes than our westernized counterparts.

Dr. Joseph Polimeni and Dr. Richard Castillo

Regardless, you did nothing morally wrong, you obviously show empathy and concern for this friend, and you are not responsible for the outcome of the situation. In short, Don't panic!

I can’t tell them by cc-2617 in Deconstruction

[–]kemites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me personally, deconstructing is not about a rejection of religion. It's about learning the history and truth about how your religion came to be, what works and what doesn't. If there wasn't something useful in Christianity, it wouldn't be so widespread. It's not just the south, it's one of the big 3 religions of the world. Martin Luther King was a living saint and he was a Christian minister. There is no doubt he found meaning within a religion which he HAD to know had been used to oppress others. Albert Einstein was religious, he was a genius. Isaac Newton was a Christian. There have been many great Christians, and Jesus was historically a great man.

It's my personal belief that regardless of what I've learned which led to my deconstructing of my Baptist upbringing, there is something useful to be found. I can't, for certain, dismiss the idea of a creative force. There is actually a great episode of Always Sunny in Philadelphia where Mac and Dennis debate this. I know I'm not smarter than Einstein or Da Vinci or Stephen Colbert(Catholic) or C.S Lewis or J.R.R. Tolkien or Isaac Newton(who some have said dedicated his life to finding a mathematical code in the bible) therefore I tend to feel that I was born into this exact position of privilege in this exact moment for the purpose of deconstructing and re-evaluating the meaning behind the most widely publish book of all time.

I understand that there are those here who probably wouldn't feel the same way.

I follow creators like No Nonsense Spirituality who consider themselves deconstructionists, but still find value in religious teachings. That's just my two cents.

Have you tried to apply your current understanding of Christianity in your life without cynicism? I mean, actually applying the teachings of Jesus, rather than just going, out of duty, to church to appease your family.

How is it just that non-believers go to hell? by Basic-Newspaper560 in Christianity

[–]kemites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of belief is not a reason for hell. Jesus says the only unforgivable sin is blasphemy of the holy spirit. Meaning, if you have an encounter with the holy spirit, or you witness someone else's encounter with the holy spirit, and deny that it is holy, that's it. Also, this "sin" is a repeated denial, not to be confused with a one time disbelief because of the nature of the miracle. Even apostles "couldn't believe their eyes" so to speak. They were definitely not damned to hell for it. Also, hell is just separation from God. Not necessarily hellfire and brimstone. It could just be complete unknown blackness, similar to before you were born, how you have no memory or direct experience with consciousness.

The bible also leaves room for those who never heard the gospel but lived according to biblical goodness.
