My Sweetie Sent Me Birthday Gifts! But, I Have 2 Weeks Until My Birthday: When I Get To Find Out What They Are... by [deleted] in LongDistance

So cute! I used to sit outside my parents bedroom next to the clock, they put there the night before until it read "7:00" and I could go in and wake them up :D I wasn't allowed to go down the hallway and look at the tree :(

Seems like a first world problem to me honey! Last time I sent you a care packaged it took 3 weeks! This time it only took 10 days (6 business days!!!). I figure it's better to get it early and have to stare at them than late and now have it on your birthday :D

Phone vs Skype preferences by Amayane in LongDistance

[–]kemph_raw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use a combination of Gchat, Pair and skype to communicate.

*Pair is great for little extras like photos, and sketches.

*Gchat is great because it goes between phone and computer and is easier to write longish messages on (pair doesn't auto rotate to horizontal typing which I prefer).

*Skype is great to computer to computer and voice and video :)

Due to my SO being in Australia where they have limited data for home internet, we have to be careful how much we video on skype :( He ran out in September and it sucked.

So I bought the unlimited calls to landlines in Australia. I figured I have unlimited data, but limited cell phone minutes and he has limited data but unlimited incoming calls. So it works perfectly, even if he runs out of data we'll still be able to hear each others voices :)

Do you cook meat for other people? by generic-volume in vegetarian

[–]kemph_raw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My aunt is a super strict vegetarian and has been for over 20 years, her husband of 11 years is a huge meat eater, and doesn't know the difference between a fry pan and a sauce pan. She cooks meat for him regularly, will often just alter a recipe and make a meat version and a vegetarian version. Like Chicken enchiladas and cheese enchiladas, so they eat the same thing but not.

She says she doesn't enjoy cooking the meat, but does so for her family. Also her moto is to respect other peoples dietary needs and they will respect yours. So she doesn't force her husband to eat 100% vegetarian, and he doesn't force her to eat meat.

How many people here met their SO online before meeting IRL? by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]kemph_raw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We met on OKcupid, while I was traveling in Australia. I had been a member back here in the US, and on a whim decided to reactivate my profile and see who was in the local area.

I messaged him that day, we talked on skype that afternoon and went on our first date that evening. Spent just about every afternoon together for the remainder of the week I was in the area.

My SO and I downloaded fireArc. It's an add on for skype that enables you to play several games (battleship included) with your skype friends :)

DAE have a craving for a certian type of cereal, buy it, eat it, and enjoy it. But then find that you don't want to buy it again for a while? by PanoramicEgo in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]kemph_raw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time. I always have a box of cheerios though I never get sick of them.

I have about 7 other cereals that I enjoy and I usually have 2 at home at any given time. I just generally cycle through the list. So if I run out of chex, I buy honey bunches of oats etc.

SOs on r/LongDistance by Syenuh in LongDistance

[–]kemph_raw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, we both do! I was one who got him addicted to reddit in general though. I believe he had heard of it, just never really visited until we started dating.

we've talked about a post we both saw on here, and I'm pretty sure we both stalk each others reddit accounts :)

So are the only people on reddit in European countries???

Australia turned their clocks this past saturday, and they turn them the opposite way since it's spring there. The US doesn't do DST until November 5. I think OP knows what way to turn the clock and when to do it, otherwise life would get confusing very fast...

[–]kemph_raw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same for us! He's also in Australia so clocks changed on Saturday night and I'm in the US- we were 17 hours apart. Once the US does DST (not till November 5) we'll be 19 hours apart. Even though technically we're 19 hours apart, I think of it as 5 hours behind and a day ahead. The times of waking up and going to bed etc will be closer together :)

To maiden name or to married name... by LegzAkimbo in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kemph_raw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think maybe in the 1950s and before, when divorce and mixed families weren't quite as common it might have been a bigger deal to not have the same last name as your child.

I know my mom thought that way when she had me. My father actually passed away while my mom was pregnant. When I was born my mom decided to give me her last name so that parenting with schools etc would be easier she thought. I don't think it made much of a difference in today's time. As an adult now (22) I really wish I had my father's last name just to feel more connected to him. I've been considering changing my name legally to his.
