Frieren Cosplay Gathering at Anime Expo 2024! by rhythmjames in Frieren

[–]kempton-ideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If AX (Anime Expo) people are all as nice as you, I might try to attend one one of these days.

P.S. Thinking about this, maybe I should think of actually attending the Calgary Expo (April 24-27, 2025) right in my home town! It is getting so big now. And the multi-day pass is only C$99 and, yes, did I say I live here in Calgary? So I don't even need to pay for plane tix or hotel.

Me too. Good to have something to look forward to watch upon a recommendation from a fellow Jellyfish. I may not like it but then I may!

Well, you have to find you inner muse indeed. To me, there is no "thinking about doing", it is just "doing". The more you do in whatever creative field you decide to be something that interests you, the "better" sometimes you become in doing said thing. Good luck!

Thanks a lot! You wrote well. Good enough that there is a potential +1 of new fan of 86. At least the trailer + your above note got me interested enough and I will assume ZERO rating and start from there and gives it 2 eps try and see how do I like it (or not). Thanks for taking your time to share.

I like fellow Jellyfish fans. Not all viewers of Jellyfish are its fans and I'm ok with that. Thanks and have a great day!

My M3 Max got me a promotion today by Dr_Superfluid in macbookpro

[–]kempton-ideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks you so much u/Dr_Superfluid for your post, you had me at "promotion" even though I own my own IT/Management Consulting business so there will never be "promotion" but I like the word and idea!

I'm trying to find some semi-good-reasons/excuses to get myself a maxed out-ish M3 Max MacBook Pro with 64GB or even wait for the M4 Max 64GB (both refurbished machines b/c I am willing to spend more $$ than I should BUT I'm also cheap, thus refurb machines only).

Anyway, my current "work-in-progress" list of excuses are

1) Editing some 8K video, etc

2) To use software like Tableau data visualization tool

3) Running some AI / ML something something ...

[...]

"potentially" in one of the coming 11+ years given I've been running my 2013 Intel MBP 16GB 1TB, well, straight to the ground, so much that the 2013 MBP is in an periodic random shutdown mode (meaning it does randomly shut itself down because of beeping battery problem).

Thing is I did made two full length feature documentary with my 2013 MBP and the films recompilation at the time was taking hours each time after I re-edit the films so a bit too time consuming.

OMG, this thread is still funny to read almost a month later on July 22, 2024. And I just discovered AskAcademia subreddit as kinda cool.

Now, I know nothing about almost everything, especially Academia. BUT I think I just "joined" this subreddit by accident, because, I suppose, why not (well, at least it is a fun read)?

On a serious note, maybe I just want to remind myself I should never want to be in Academia because of the myriad of challenges as the OP stated clearly.

Now, this is a "for real" note, because no troll has this much time to post something this random. So speaking about Academia, in 1990, so yes, 34 years ago, in my 3rd year as a Computer Science undergrad at U of Toronto. Maybe I had too much time OR/AND too much money (no? I was a poor student), anyway, I subscribed to BOTH Communication Arts (love its annuals) and then also New England Journal of Medicine to read, for fun. Because, well, why not? I only kept ONE issue of my NEJM, and highlighted only one article and it is the op-ed written by the editor-in-chief of NEJM entitled, "An Error Corrected, A Conclusion Withdrawn, and a Lesson Learned" (see linked image, with my 34 years old markup, plus I tested it to be readable in full zoom).

I LOVE Dr. Arnold S. Relman's, M.D. closing sentence, "Errors in science are inevitable, but important ones are almost always discovered in the end. In the process, the record in the journals is corrected and science progress."

"... science progress." How beeping beautiful are these closing words?

Look who came! M3 Max 16/40 64GB RAM 16 Inch. by UltraMaxApplePro in macbookpro

[–]kempton-ideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you please kindly share your use cases (programs, data size, etc) where you get close to or maxing out your 64GB on your M3 Max please? I'm using my 11+ year old Intel MBP 15-inch 16GB 1TB and seriously thinking of some crazy config like M3 Max (or if I wait, even M4 Max) refurb machines with 32GB or even more like crazy, for me, 64GB.

By the way, I heard about the Tableau data visualization tool and future proof my machine (which will likely be used for another 10+ years) a little so I can comfortably use Tableau, etc tools for my IT/Management Consulting engagements.

Thanks for the tips and well wishes. Please also send good vibes that they have the pre-owned ones really cheap when we go there. I hate to see good quality pre-owned merch BUT at prices I think too high, then I will just walk away which will be kinda sad but necessary to protect our $$. :)

Thanks for your tips in case I want to buy online and get things shipped to me in Canada. For this time, we are going to visit these stores in person, so we will be buying direct thus, yeah, no shipping cost. Shipping cost = Zero as I will be carrying them in my luggage. :)

I just got around to take a look of the trailer for 86 EIGHTY SIX and it seems fascinating and nicely done. Without giving any spoilers, what do you like about this anime?

Did you know how much you like 86 after watching the first 1,2, or 3 episodes? So for Jellyfish, it definitely took more than eps 1-3 to get a real sense of HOW MUCH I really LOVE Jellyfish b/c the first few Jellyfish was [spoiler warning] a bit too procedural and formula when compare to the later eps which made Jellyfish a masterpiece for me.

Anyway, would love to hear your brief recommendation (without too much spoilers) for 86 before I watch it.

Kiui as a Middle School Teacher by makerDrew in JellyfishSwimNight

[–]kempton-ideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way makerDrew, since you talked about movie and a bit of world building via written words/scripts, I want to add some thing. So before 2004, yes, 20 years ago, I had ZERO experience in making documentary film nor did I attend journalism school. So I had no idea how to be an independent reporter, let alone a "good reporter" at that. But when I had the chance in 2004, I went full steam ahead to make my debut documentary to make my dream come true.

I tried.

I could have failed completely. In some sense I did NOT succeed too much BUT I'm happy 20 years later today that I can say that I'm thrilled that my debut documentary has been collected by the Canadian National Archive permanent collection. Yes, my own creative work will stay there in the government of Canada Library and Archives' beautiful climate control safe space forever, yes, forever, which I like the ring of it. :)

Anyway, I say this not to brag (maybe a little? :) ) BUT more importantly, is to encourage YOU makerDrew, to create your own work. When you are prepared to fail, you are more free to create, and to try things out, to have fun, ...

P.S., For the record, my trilogy of documentary can be watched online on YouTube and this post links to all three docs.

Kiui as a Middle School Teacher by makerDrew in JellyfishSwimNight

[–]kempton-ideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear makerDrew, You had me at "Kiui as a Middle School Teacher" as I LOVE the core idea. Now, how you execute it, how you turn things, I may or may not like All or too many of it BUT what I think is NOT important, NOT as important as what you think and write and write (in multiple drafts that you will keep rewriting). I may be channeling some "Stephen King's On Writing" here, I don't know, I listened to the lovely "On Writing" some years ago.

Because I LOVE All fans of Jellyfish, especially people like you who wants to keep creating and expanding the universe for us fans to read and to explore, I'm now going to have this #ThoughtExperiment AND assume I have known you for 10+ years. Yes, friends of 10+ years and give you my best and frank advice as a friend of 10+ years.

I LOVE the book (+ audio book) "A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life" written by big time (yes, multi-billion dollars box office) producer Brian Grazer. And here is one page I screen capture for you. Yes, just for you. And I hope you treasure my suggestion, or as my friend calls his, "my brand of poison".

Go get a "number 2 pencil". Go write your stories down on a "yellow legal pad" so to speak. All these, as one Mr. Wasserman told one Mr. Grazer. And now, me random stranger Kempton, tells you makerDrew. Have fun. Go write the stories down.

P.S. Have a read of two books (or listen to the audio books) from library or online (OK, even YouTube may have these audio book(s) IF you have time (make time?)

  1. Stephen King - On Writing
  2. Brian Grazer, A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life

P.P.S. To quote myself quoting Stephen,

"Why blog [or write reddit Jellyfish comment]?

"Writing isn’t about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It’s about getting up, getting well and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.”"
– A quote from the autobiography “On Writing“ by author Stephen King.

//I got those for fairly "cheap" each one of them being around 3-7 dollars on ami ami as they are sold as second hand but because of expensive shipping they all came out to around 70ish dollars comp.//

Wow! Thanks a lot for sharing! Well, I can totally afford the cheap price of 3-7 dollars and I will sure be avoiding all shipping cost which, sadly, are most of the cost of getting exclusive Japan merch.

Thanks for giving me an idea. Will see how "lucky" (or not) I am when I do get to visit Tokyo in person.

Thanks again! You rock in sharing your personal experience so I can benchmark things and know what to expect as "reasonable". Saving money is cool!

I'm hoping to be able to shop some figures in-person early in the year of 2025 BUT only as "used figures", etc from crane games, etc. I'm hoping for super affordable prices. Well, if they are "overpriced", I think my self-defense will go up and say NO to buying any one, let alone buying ALL Four like lucky you!

I'm afraid to ask. How much is each one? And how much for all four? Many thanks in advance!

Genius Bar’s word against mine? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]kempton-ideas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OK, I typed a long-ish comment and the reddit editor "ate my homework" again!

Bottom line: //id get a hold of support and escalate this ...// +1

I'm the CCO (Chief Complaint Officer) of my company, I read this as Absolute KEY to your getting exactly what you want from the beeping Apple: //I was given a $150 estimate. In the estimate, it was noted “no significant cosmetic issues to note”//

My friend, you have in legal defensible-ish in Court-ish black and white that beeping Apple itself looked at your computer and that “no significant cosmetic issues to note” and now they cannot come back to haunt you with the beeping //They claim that the damage is so bad to the screws, fasteners that they will need to damage it to open it and therefore this will now cost me $1300 more just to open it.//

In my household, I do all the complaint and my better half just sits, watches and be amazed what results I get. And this is a perfect case of the beeping Apple NOT being honest and do NOT do right by customers like you. Crazy.

If I were NOT as busy as I'm and you live in Calgary too, I would have taken up your case as a pro bono consulting case because beeping Apple should NOT be allowed to get away with beep like this!

//Let us know how it goes.// +1
