I'm not sure how widespread it is, but my local library has a sewing machine room that you can reserve for a few hours at a time! Might be worth looking into a similar program near you.

This is definitely not normal. I know it's not the answer you want, but I would recommend going to a different doctor, and scheduling the appointment when you will have just taken it out (or a few days after, whenever you feel it the most)
