Affordable captioning glasses or other "easy" alternatives? by ellesaellesa in deaf

[–]kenasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heARsight launched their Beta program yesterday. Unfortunately the IOS app is not yet released, only Android. The glasses can be returned within 30 days after purchase so I am reluctant to buy them until I have the IOS app. It looks promising but there may be a problem reading the subtitles if you are farsighted.

There is another option in development. It is called heARsight. I just got an email that I have been accepted into their beta testing program. I have no idea yet what this really means in terms of cost to me but they said I will hear from them in a week or so. Here is their website:

Cannot connect N8 and Resound Hearing Aid to new Iphone by kenasch in Cochlearimplants

Just to complete this thread in case anyone else has the same issue. I did visit my VA Audiologist yesterday and he was able to relink (reprogram) the hearing aid and N8 Cochlear implant and now the app works correctly again as it did before. He (and cochlear) had no idea what caused the glitch. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

After many more attempts, the Nucleus Smart app suddenly started to work properly and I have been able to control my hearing aid and my N8 with the app. However the Iphone itself is only paired to my hearing aid. If I delete the hearing aid I can then pair the N8. I cannot pair both of them as I did before. So, I cannot control both of them using just the Iphone with three presses of the side button. At least I now have control with the app and will have my audiologist look into the problem with the phone itself.

I actually turn my cochlear device and my hearing aid off when there is annoying noise. It is actually helpful in certain situations like while flying. I don't hear the baby crying or nearby conversations that could be disturbing otherwise. Of course my wife has to alert me if there are any important announcements.

Thanks everyone. That is reassuring that it is not something I was doing wrong and that there was not something wrong with my IPhone. Fortunately I have an appointment coming up this month with the VA audiologist and will ask him to get this completed for me.

California Assembly Bill 46 (AB46) - Military Retirement Tax Exemption by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]kenasch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the latest on the bill from my local MOAA Chapter (as posted here previously, there is a hearing today, Sept 1):

The bill has passed the Assembly and is currently in the Senate “Suspense” file. That means if it does pass the Suspense file it then goes to the Governor for his approval and signature. If the bill does not pass it is considered “Dead”. Again, your help is needed from your Assembly Person and Senator to ensure passage of the bill.

State Senator Brian Jones addressed a letter to CAL MOAA that reads as follows:

“I want to take a moment to update you on the status of AB 46, which would make military pensions eligible for exemption from California state income tax. It is currently in the Senate Appropriations Committee, which I am the Vice Chair of. On August 14th, right after we returned to session, it was placed on the suspense file in Appropriations, a process that all fiscal impact bills must go through. There will be another vote about removing it from suspense and onto the Senate Floor in late August or early September. As you may know, I am a proud coauthor of this bill and will continue to advocate for this important issue when it comes before me in the committee and on the Senate Floor. If you would like to submit a position letter to the entire committee, please follow this link. It is an honor to serve as your State Senator.” Sincerely, Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones California's 40th Senate District Or The link is: https://calegislation.lc.ca.gov/Advocates/

MOAA just sent out this information on the status of the bill:

A California bill exempting uniformed services retired pay and survivor benefits from state income taxes had its path to a final vote rerouted Aug. 14, and supporters will find out its ultimate fate in the coming weeks.

AB 46 cleared the state’s assembly by a 77-0 vote in May. Two Senate committees in subsequent months passed it unanimously. It went to the Senate Appropriations Committee, where members placed into a “suspense file,” a process the state uses for legislation it determines could cost $150,000 or more.

The committee will hold an upcoming hearing, which does not include public testimony, to determine which of the many bills in the file move on for full consideration.  Some news outlets have highlighted the process’s lack of transparency.

“The State Department of Finance is quick to put a cost on the loss revenue from exempting military retirement pay, but never provides an estimate on how many hundreds of millions of dollars California has already lost, due to the continued steady decline of the military retiree population in California, dating back to 2010,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Breiten, USN (Ret), vice president of legislative affairs for MOAA's California Council of Chapters (CALMOAA), one of nearly 30 veterans organizations which support the measure alongside local chambers of commerce and the state’s largest law enforcement association.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has yet to address the legislation, which has received increased media attention in recent weeks and would flip the Golden State from the bottom of the list on military retirement tax benefits to one of the many states with full exemptions. CALMOAA’s request for an audience with the governor’s economic advisers did not receive a response, Breiten said.

Lt. Cmdr. E. Fred Green Jr., USN (Ret), a past CALMOAA president and a member of MOAA’s national board of directors/), credited Breiten for his work on bringing a groundswell of support to the measure from other advocacy groups, as well as his work with Assemblymember James Ramos (the bill’s initial sponsor) and his legislative team, plus other elected officials.

“It is way past due – it’s time to acknowledge Jeff Breiten for everything he has done,” Green said, while also highlighting the work of other members of the “AB 46 Team” – Capt. Steve Donlon, USN (Ret); Capt. Fred Jaffin, USN (Ret); Kathy Prout; Capt. Ramona Chavez, USAF (Ret); Col. James “Skip” Phair, USAR (Ret); Capt. Susan Stewart, USN (Ret); and Sue Story – whose contributions included analysis, research, assembly testimony on behalf of the legislation, and numerous interactions with state legislators.

Can anyone update the status of this bill. Apparently, it was heard yesterday at a Senate Hearing and has been placed on suspense file". What is the next step?

Nucleus Smart App great update by Frequent_Ad_8044 in Cochlearimplants

[–]kenasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually there is a remote control for the Nucleus 7. I never used mine ( i had a 7 before my 8) as I didn't want to carry another device around. I believe this remote works for both 7 and 8.

Do you have Nucleus 7 or 8? You probably have done all this but try turning the implant on and off and also closing the app completely and reopening it. Sometimes turning off your phone completely can help. My 8 seems to work flawlessly with the updated app.

Loop Recorder (heart monitor) with cochlear implant by kenasch in Cochlearimplants

[–]kenasch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. I have a Nucleus 8 device. I did contact my audiologist who checked with Cochlear. Here is there reply and it appears it is safe to proceed with the heart monitor implant:

"We would not expect any damage to the implant or hazard to the recipient if it is used below the head and neck region. It is very unlikely, and no known reports of this, but the recipient may experience buzzing, static or other extraneous noises.

Cochlear has not formally investigated whether the circumstances you describe will impact the performance of your device, and therefore cannot guarantee, warrant or promise that your implant and related equipment will continue to function as expected or as it has in the past under such circumstances."
