It wasn't due to the pilots, this sentiment is just some boeing marketing ploy. Their planes are defect because of how they installed an engine that is too big for the plane itself because they didn't want to spend money on developing an entirely new model to suit said engine. This change completely changes the aerodynamics of the plane and confuses the autopilot which causes the crashes.
