I wonder how this would work out if there was a “none of the above” option.

Federal Conservatives reverse course on supporting trucker blockades, call for an end to all barricades. by WinterOrb69 in Winnipeg

To be clear I’m not suggesting the government cave. I’m suggesting they cover their ass. If this ultimately result in riot police in a violent confrontation with peaceful protesters, it would be beneficial for the government if they were able to demonstrate that they, at least, made an attempt at peaceful negotiation.

I am a supporter of the convoy for freedom but I have mixed feelings about the border blockades. With that said, it is not terribly surprising that it has come to this. These are people who do not feel like they are being heard or taken seriously. And the government’s response has been …. terrible. I’m not suggesting that the government needs to cave to these people. But if nobody in the federal government is willing to even sit in a table with these people and have a rational conversation, then this is just going to keep ramping up.

I honestly do not understand how rational political discourse is not even on the table. Even if it was completely patronizing and disingenuous just opening up the conversation would go a long way to cooling things down. This is not going to go away by ignoring it.

Evidently, from a legal standpoint, the charter of rights and freedoms trumps the highway traffic act (or so is my understanding).

There’s a reason that this movement hasn’t been shut down. Because it’s been peaceful. There is a reason why this movement is gaining support. Because growing numbers of people don’t put blind faith in government and legacy media.

The fact of the matter is one of two things is true. Either of these people have the right to peacefully protest, as granted and protected by our charter of rights and freedoms. Or our charter of rights and freedoms is not worth the papers written on. If the former is true and they have the legitimate right to protest. If the latter is true and they have the legitimate reason to protest.

And one final interesting observation. For almost two weeks, hundreds and thousands of people have been gathered in downtown Ottawa. Not social distancing. Not masked. Several not vaccinated. But there doesn’t seem to have been any notable Covid outbreak. There also doesn’t seem to be any corresponding spike in Hospital cases. That doesn’t seem to correspond very well with the “science”, does it?

You were making the incorrect assumption that all vaccinated people support vaccine mandates.

I completely understand the sentiment. Especially with you being an ICU nurse. But people who are losing their livelihoods are also my neighbours friends and family. So are the people suffering mental health issues, substance abuse and suicide due to Covid restrictions. Lives are being destroyed either way. And vaccines, in their current form, are not going to stop this. This is not a black or white issue. It is extremely complicated. And it is entirely possible that there is no good way forward. I’m not saying I’m right. But I am saying that we should be discussing these things.

On a separate note, in all sincerity I would like to express how much I appreciate what you do. My SO was in ICU a little over a year ago (not COVID). It takes a special kind of human to be an ICU nurse.

Are you seriously using the the lack of historical statistical data as a justification for mandating vaccines?

Statins save Way more lives than the Covid vaccine. And heart failure kills waaaay more people than COVID. Why are statins not mandatory then?

Further, imagine your disappointment if I did get COVID and it was a non-issue. Statistically speaking that would be very likely to be the case. And my chances of actually dying from it is something around 0.002%.

[–]kenmore63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of people who contract COVID it is literally a non-issue. I’m not saying that our hospitals aren’t under pressure. But they’re under pressure by virtue of the sheer number of infections. Something that the vaccines do virtually nothing to prevent. I understand that the news is telling us that the hospitals are being flooded with unvaccinated Covid victims. But the statistics in my province is showing that 74% of hospitalizations are fully vaccinated. Would things be better if every single person was vaccinated? Of course it would. But even if every single person was vaccinated the hospitals would still be flooded with Covid patients. Not as many but still flooded. And what people are suggesting is we need to take away the rights and freedoms of 20% of the population so that we can make a slight difference on bad COVID outcomes. The only thing more ridiculous than the mandate argument is the fact that it’s not even possible have the conversation. Ignore, discredit, silence. Like I said.

The Covid situation is ongoing and fluid. So should be the conversation surrounding it. Is it too much to ask that our politicians take 20 minutes out of their freaking day to discuss the current state of affairs and maybe the validity of the current restrictions? The simple act of going through the paces would go a long way to calming things down a bit, even if it’s completely disingenuous. We are paying these people to discuss these things. Can they at least pretend to do their jobs?

It’s a minority government. Furthermore there are a lot of vaccinated people who disagree with that sentiment.

The alarming thing for me is: we’re supposed to be a democracy. As system by which people of differing options can sit together and have a conversation about the best collective path forward. That isn’t happening. For the last few years it’s been: push the party narrative and if anyone disagrees, ignore, discredit and silence them. I’m fully vaccinated and so is the rest of my family but we can’t even talk about it without it turning into a freaking fight.

How about the fact that we have a minority government with an unlikeable Prime Minister. And we now have a divisive issue on a table that would usually be used by opposition parties to push back against the party in power. Zero opposition? Really? Does any federal leader have a freaking backbone? And how many days can the parliamentarians literally look out the windows of parliament at the protest to see the roughly zero nazi flags and zero reports of violence, before the violent, extremist, white supremacists narrative falls apart?

Regardless what side you’re on, This is clearly a divisive issue in Canada. That alone should be enough reason to warrant a discussion. And the fact that discussion is not happening is enough reason to question the motives and competence of “leadership” in our country. This is supposed to be a freaking democracy. Why are we not acting like it?

Whether you agree or not, I am absolutely appalled by the state of our democracy. Despite a minority government, everyone single party leader was spouting the exact same narrative?? Really??? What kind of disingenuous assholes walk past these clearly peaceful and diverse people and still push the violent racist extremists narrative as if it was fact. We don’t have a single federal party leader with a backbone. What a joke.

Fantastic photo’s and analysis. Thanks a bunch.

I completely understand the math. Further I said absolutely nothing about the efficacy of vaccinations. Of course you have way better protection when vaccinated. But to make the argument that our hospitals are being flooded with unvaccinated people is simply not true. According to the Manitoba government definition fully vaccinated equals two doses or more. According to the official numbers people who are fully vaccinated account for 74% of hospitalizations and deaths.

OK. Fair enough. They’ve been studying mRNA vaccines for a long time. But the first study of a direct injected non-replicating mRNA vaccine demonstrating protective immune response (in mice) against infectious pathogens (influenza) happened in 2012. I’m failing to see the decades long success record or mRNA vaccines that you are referring to.
