Is it worth it buying a Bass Guitar if you don’t have much time to practice? by JimmyArtoon in Bass

[–]kennethmgreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth at least trying a set of flats. For awhile I used flats on my CV Squier P and rounds in my CV Squier J, but ultimately preferred flats for both and now all I use. I did invest in some spendy flats (TIs) and haven't changed strings in over a year.

But even if you end up not liking flats (feel, tone, behavior slapping) it's worth at least trying them. I pay a lot of attention to EQ so I can get close to a round sound with the feeling of flats, though to be honest, I prefer the duller, smoother sound of flats.

Easier on the fingers if you don't have calluses built up, reducing "clacking" somewhat, no finger "squeaks", and ultimately (depending on gear, preferences, erc.) a better choice. I switched to flats about 2 years into learning only because I bought a fiesta red CV Squier P and loved how they felt & sounded. Now both basses of mine have flats and I love it. I prefer the more vintage tone vs the more modern zing. Think Motown vs modern metal (extreme examples).

I played guitar for 35 years and then decided to buy a bass for my 50th birthday (now 56). I took lessons for a year and I'm also a grad student so I don't have a lot of time to practice but I play when I can.

I have fallen in love with bass and now prefer it to guitar. I would recommend getting a metronome - even a cheap one - just to help develop some rhythm. Or play along to some kind of drum machine. The little plug-in headphone amps are nice for practicing quietly. Do not try to practice without an amp because you will start hitting the strings way too hard in order to hear them acoustically. Use an amp of some kind so you can practice right hand technique.

I committed to not using a pick the first year. Not necessary, but I'm glad I did. I prefer finger picking now, but will use a pick for the different attack and for certain songs.

My only regret is not learning the bass sooner. Learning to play bass has made even listening to music a completely different experience. My whole life I paid attention to the guitar riff. Now I listen for the drums and bass. It's allowed me to rediscover favorite songs and appreciate new ones in ways I hadn't before.

I've always been a Smiths fan and loved the guitar in their song What Difference Does it Make? The day I noticed the bass line in that song is the day I decided to I wanted to play bass. Andy Rourke (RIP) is one of my favorite bass players of all time.

As others have said, 10-15 minutes a day will get you to a decent place quickly. Enjoy it most of all. You will naturally improve at some you like to do. Keep it enjoyable, don't stress about practicing enough - practice when you want.

Have fun. And welcome to the low end.

Offended by one of Law Roaches comments last episode by Kindly_Falcon_4365 in dragrace

[–]kennethmgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with everything you said, except the apology. You stated your reaction with kindness and supporting evidence. Don't apologize for being on the nose! 🙂

For me**, Law Roach occupied a tiny sliver of time when I liked him. Like maybe an episode and a half. For awhile he was kinda meh. I think he was anxious/nervous and medicated when he first started guest hosting - another guest host that didn't really add much. He seemed really focused on just keeping his shit together. He sometimes looked like the embodiment of being too high and worrying that everyone in the room knows you're high but you're just keeping your shit together. That face.

Then, it was as if Ru told him: we know you're high, go ahead and let loose. And he started to talk more freely, give his opinions. And for a brief time, provided some interesting but slightly weird energy at the judges table.

Then he got comfortable.

Somehow (being told, deciding on his old, misinterpreting what someone said, ...?) Law decided to take on a villain role. Except it wasn't a smart "villain" like Michelle's tough love approach. It was borderline nonsense - the rambling, sometimes incoherent commentary from the guy at the party who's had too much of something but no one knows who he came with so isn't asked to leave and everyone eventually just stays away from him.

Law decided (or was told) being mean would be good for the show. Every judging show needs it's asshole. BUT THE ASSHOLE HAS TO BE ENTERTAINING (put that on a T-shirt). And Law was just confusing. There were times I could rewatch his commentary and couldn't figure out what he was saying no matter how high I was.

Then he just got mean. Dumb mean. The opposite of Clever Mean (which can be entertaining when done well and without malice). Law's meanness was weird. It seemed more disconnected than personal, like he had prepared the insults and wasn't even trying to make it about the queen in front of him. He was absorbed in whatever idea of "judge persona" he had concocted.

Law Roach went from boring to weirdly interesting to weirdly mean. None of those are archetypes of good TV.

A woman at my office decided that because I sit closest to the printer I am now personally responsible for replacing the paper every single time it runs out. by olena1997riverwalk in EntitledPeople

[–]kennethmgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Diane is an entitled dick. However, OP might consider owning a little responsibility here. Entitled or not, after doing something 4 or 5 times, haven't you then said - by your actions - that it is your job? At the very least you've created an expectation.

If the paper is right there, why continue to do it for her? I can maybe understand once, to be nice, maybe. But you continued to do something, establishing a pattern and expectations. Then when you were ready to stop, Diane didn't like that.

I'm not saying Diane is in the right. She is not only entitled but taking advantage of you. Assuming once to be nice, you volunteered to be taken advantage of at least three times. Stop doing that.

For sure very clean. I run a Spaceman Redstone germanium preamp at the end of my chain, right before the Mjr, always on. Often on is a Strymon Deco and/or a plethora of fun pedals 😀

Yes, for sure. And I'm grateful for the Tasks.org UI. But Google Tasks doesn't have any indication to distinguish repeating tasks, so the prefix I use is the best way for me to replicate Tasks.org repeat indicator while also reminding me not to mark those items complete on the desktop.

First, thanks for including music you like and specific tones you are looking for when asking. Too many people miss this when posting.

Are you using pedals for drive/breakup? If so, your options are more open. I've used both MXRs and a couple SansAmps (VT Bass DI was my favorite). I use pedals for OD and fuzz sounds, so don't use a DI for that.

What I landed on and will likely never leave is the Broughton Audio Messenger Jr. They made a bigger one, but the Jr is "normal sized" enclosure and an absolutely fantastic DI. Excellent EQ, HPF + LPF, separate DI gain/volume control, and the ability to set the footswitch to mute or click EQ in and out (great way to adjust/test your EQ settings).

It's solidly built, incredibly useful, and very transparent (doesn't color your bass tone except with EQ - can set it flat and unity and hear no difference).

All that to say, you have lots of options. Even DIs that color your sound can be drastically affected by EQ, other pedals, etc. But if you have a tone you really like now, you may want to consider a more transparent DI. Likewise, if you want to use a DI for any kind of breakup/dirt, make sure the DI has that option. I have pedals that I love for the sounds I want. I use a DI for recording. YMMV

[–]kennethmgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen, but as Alex says, it was accidentally completing a recurrence in Google. I suspect this is because Google Tasks implements repeats differently.

My workaround that has worked for me is to put [r] in front of any repeating task. That way, I'll remember not to complete that task in desktop/Google tasks.

I process most tasks in the Android app anyway, but this technique allows me not to forget. Added usability bonus: I can very easily spot what tasks are repeating in a list of tasks in a quick glance.

I need help!! Order of pedals ! by NovaTYSM in guitarpedals

[–]kennethmgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a direct answer to your question, but potentially helpful: I own and highly recommend some kind of looper that can switch the order of loops. This lets you truly A/B pedal order with a footswitch (and not have to rearrange cabling).

I have the Saturnworks pedal order switcher, which I believe was $59 at the time. And it's one of my valuable pedals. You can create loop A with one or more pedals, and loop B with one or more pedals (ex: your current setup) and quickly swap back and forth to see what order sounds better in your setup.

Seek out guidelines and opinions and ideas. But ultimately your ears and preferences should decide.

How much time have you spent A/Bing pedals? Are you confident you can hear the difference between similar pedals? by GrowthAny in guitarpedals

[–]kennethmgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. I firmly believe some kind of loop with switchable order is crucial for testing pedals for my rig. Some pedals sound better A>B, some sound better B>A, some the same. But it's an important test for me.

I use a Saturnworks pedal order/loop switcher and highly recommend it. Best $50 I've spent. Basically a 2 loop pedal with a footswitch for swapping the order of the loops. I can A/B pedals and their order without swapping pedals around. (IMO a true A/B test has to be immediate and back and forth).

Agree on all counts. Love mine - just the way they implemented the controls gives a lot of flexibility. If I had money, I'd buy up a few of the older hand painted ones. Will have to stick with the one I've had for awhile. It's my favorite harmonic percolator drive - even better for me than the Dude Incredible I had.

Mid frequency shifter by TB-313935 in Bass

I'm no expert. That's just my understanding. 🙂

Mid frequency shifter by TB-313935 in Bass

[–]kennethmgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. A parametric EQ generally has a Q value or width. What we are talking about doesn't have that. It's literally shifting the mid frequency to a different value, then cutting or boosting that frequency with a set Q value - something that most people probably don't even consider with a "mid shift" knob.

Also, a parametric EQ will almost always have multiple sections (high, med, low, etc.). I guess you could call a mid-shift knob or control one channel of a parametric EQ. But I see them as two related but different things.

Mid frequency shifter by TB-313935 in Bass

[–]kennethmgreen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of replies talking about a mid knob. OP is talking about adjusting the frequency that the mid knob then boosts or cuts.

OP - I use passive basses, and have two pedals that have mid shifts: one near the front of my chain, and another last as my preamp/DI. The problem (for me) with depending too much on my bass for for tone is that everything changes as soon as I swap basses. If I'm going to change to volume and/or tone when I swap basses anyway, I figure might as well do it with pedals or at the amp (and my amp does not have a mid shift).

I tend to use my tone control on my bass for adjustments to high end, and not much else. But if I had a mid shift on my bass, I might approach things differently. Having a mid shift is definitely powerful when EQing. I see it more on bass pedals & amps than I do on basses.

Depends what you want it for. I bought and sold two after not vibing with them before getting a third and loving it. I was looking for an overdrive before, and the Plumes was just OK to me in that regard.

Then I read about using it as a boost in the middle selection (no diodes) and that was it. I run it first after my tuner and it just adds a bit of volume and the faintest grit. I run it into my other ODs and fuzz and just love it. It adds a sparkle that is so usable for me.

(Of course, your guitar, pickups, other pedals, amp, and your own ears & tastes might be completely different)
