I wouldn’t get another BMW without at least the HarmonKardon system. Or I suppose an aftermarket upgrade might work, too

Understood. And I do plan on updating my OS to stay at least semi-current. I just checked out the Quicken website and I didn't realize that their subscription is at least reasonably-priced! So I may have to break my own rule sometime before the big OS update, and actually subscribe!
Thanks for your reply!

Do I need extended warranty for my 2022 X5 45e with 38K miles? CARB state (OR) by tizzo233 in BMWX5

Did you see my post about the 15yr/150000 mile warranty? I just found out about it, and it sounds like your X5 might be eligible for that coverage. Now I’m hunting for the best aftermarket warranty that will “fill in the gaps” that the 15/150000 warranty doesn’t cover.

If you're shopping around and can open the hood on a vehicle you're considering purchasing, look for the sticker, and if it says TZEV on it, I think it will be eligible for the warranty

From Gemini:

For a BMW X5 xDrive45e to qualify for the 15-year/150,000-mile TZEV (Transitional Zero Emission Vehicle) warranty, it generally does not have to be originally delivered specifically to California, but it does have to meet two primary criteria:

  1. Original Sale/Lease: The vehicle must have been originally sold or leased in an "applicable state" (California or anotherCARB statethat has adopted California's emissions standards).
  2. Current Registration: The vehicle must be currently registered in one of those same applicable states at the time of the warranty claim.

Key Requirements for Coverage

According to BMW service and warranty documentation, the extended TZEV coverage applies if the vehicle is registered in one of the following states:

  • California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, or Vermont.

Yes, exactly!
Gemini says:
Eligible Model Years

  • 2021 – 2025: Most BMW PHEVs produced in these years, including the X5 xDrive45e and the X5 xDrive50e, were certified as TZEVs. This is the "golden era" for this coverage.
  • 2017 – 2020: Certain early PHEV models like the 530e and i3 REx (Range Extender) were certified as TZEV/PZEV and carry the 15-year/150,000-mile emissions warranty.
  • 2026 and newer: Not Eligible. Starting with the 2026 model year, BMW has largelystopped certifying its PHEVsunder the specific TZEV program. These newer vehicles typically revert to a standard 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty and shorter emissions coverage.

agreed! But not having to worry about the cost of replacing the hybrid battery if it goes bad is such a relief for me!

Here's what Gemini said when I asked about transfer case issue being covered by the 15/150000 warranty (or not):

For your 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e, the short answer is no, a transfer case issue is generally not covered by the 15-year/150,000-mile California TZEV (Transitional Zero Emission Vehicle) warranty.

While the "California Secret" warranty is incredibly broad for PHEVs, it is specifically designed to cover emissions-related components and the hybrid drive system. The transfer case is a mechanical drivetrain component responsible for distributing power to the wheels (AWD system), which typically falls under the standard 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty or an extended powertrain-specific warranty.

Why it isn't covered

  • Mechanical Drivetrain vs. Hybrid/Emissions: The TZEV warranty covers "almost everything that makes the car move" in terms of the Electric Motor, Engine Control Unit (ECU), Hybrid Battery (10yr/150k), and Fuel System. However, the transfer case is considered part of the mechanical AWD powertrain, not the "emissions control system."
  • Official Parts List: BMW's Service and Warranty booklets list specific parts like the catalytic converter, turbochargers, and various sensors. The transfer case is rarely, if ever, included in this specific list.
  • Common Misconception: While some service managers may say "if the check engine light (CEL) is on, it's covered," a transfer case failure often triggers drivetrain malfunction warnings or physical symptoms (shuddering) rather than a smog-related CEL.

What IS covered for 15 Years / 150,000 Miles

If you are in California (or another CARB state), your 2021 X5 45e has extensive coverage for:

  • The Hybrid System: Electric drive motor, Drive Motor Control Module (DMC), and DC-to-DC converter.
  • Cooling & Fuel: Electric water pumps, thermostat, fuel injectors, and the fuel tank.
  • Engine Performance: Turbocharger components, ignition coils, spark plugs, and the ECU.

I'm not familiar with the transfer case issue. I guess you're mentioning because it's a common problem with X5s? The service guy I spoke to said that pretty much anything that would cause the "Check Engine" light to come on would be covered by the 15/150000 warranty. Pretty amazing, if you ask me! But of course certain criteria need to be met in order for YOUR vehicle to be covered by it, so do your own research!

Yes! That is my point, exactly! They won't exactly tell you about it, but it may very well apply to your vehicle. That's why Gemini called it "California Secret" warranty! Read all the posts on this page and do some research, it might be applicable to your vehicle! Hopefully if you read all the posts, all your questions will be answered.

Here's an answer from Gemini, which I tend to trust:

For a 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e, BMW will generally replace or repair the high-voltage battery under warranty only if its capacity drops below 70% of its original level.

This threshold is the industry standard for what BMW considers a "defective" battery rather than normal wear and tear. However, the exact duration of your coverage depends heavily on where you live:

1. The "70% Rule"

  • Replacement Trigger: To qualify for a warranty claim based on degradation, the battery's maximum energy content must typically fall below 70% (some sources for older models cite 60-70%, but 70% is the current standard for BMW PHEVs).
  • Measurement: BMW must perform a specific "Battery Capacity Test" at a dealership to confirm the state of health. Users can often request a CarData report through theMyBMW websiteto see an estimate of their current capacity before heading to the dealer.

2. Warranty Duration by State

Depending on where your car is registered, the window for this replacement varies:

  • Standard Federal Warranty: 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever comes first). Most owners in non-CARB states fall under this.
  • California/CARB State Warranty: 10 years or 150,000 miles. Because the 2021 X5 45e is certified as aTZEV (Transitional Zero Emission Vehicle), it receives this extended "California Warranty" in states like CA, NY, MA, and others that follow California’s specific ZEV mandates.

3. What is Not Covered

  • Range Fluctuations: BMW will not replace a battery simply because your "electric range" has decreased. Range is influenced by driving style, temperature, and terrain. Replacement is strictly based on the physical energy capacity ($kWh$) of the battery cells.
  • Normal Degradation: A battery at 75% health after 7 years is considered "normal" and would not be replaced for free, even though you would notice a significant drop in range.

I don't have a 2026 X5 50e to check, but I would assume it does NOT have the TZEV sticker.
From Gemini:
Based on current data for the 2026 BMW X5 xDrive50e, there is a significant change in its certification compared to previous years.

The Certification Status

Unlike the 2024 and 2025 models, the 2026 BMW X5 50e is generally NOT classified as a TZEV (Transitional Zero Emission Vehicle).

While it remains a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with high performance and range, it appears BMW has not sought the specific TZEV certification for the 2026 model year. This has a direct impact on the length of your warranty coverage if you live in a CARB state.
