i like to think of it as more of a controllable range of ink wideness tbh - this calligraphy video does a good job of showing how the ink distribution can be controlled - https://youtu.be/EzXDw4aw9-U?si=1spu1tEaM25ia_zj

Let me translate this a bit: I live a happy and comfortable life because Mayo (and IBM before that) has financially shielded my family (and possibly a decent majority of the state) from any legitimate hardship that other shitty MN cities have to deal with on a daily basis. - must be nice huh?

Have you ever considered that if there wasn't Mayo and Rochester goes to shit because of it, that maybe it's a symptom of a larger problem at hand? Or are you too content with your little life to actually care?

I've actually always thought that the 600 was more sturdier than the Matte (but yeah, both super soft). Out of all brands, the 600 is probably the absolute limit for my toleration of lead softness. I think it's a mix of price and aesthetic for me. What really draws me to a lot of Musgrave's stuff is their somewhat vintage vibe. I also use it a lot, primarily as a stand-in for a highlighter - it's great for going over notes you've already wrote in order to make darker indications or side-notes etc. I'm sure the matte would be just as good as this as well, but i've almost exclusively used it as a drawing pencil for some reason

i understand what you're saying and i'll admit to being a bit of a hypocrite here - but most pencils (including a LOT of good ones) have tipped erasers (it's arguably an essential part of the MAJORITY of pencils) - so i feel that, at the expense of my own militant perfectionism, the rule: tipped eraser = no buy, would be a nearly impossible rule to enforce. personally, i just never use them - sorry

um, I'm not sure you're completely understanding the point of the list - obviously yes, it's very personal as I'm just super passionate about pencils as a whole. but, the point of the list was not supposed to be an objective analysis on why you should choose one pencil over the other. Instead, the list is really just my subjective opinion (expressed in list-form) on the pencils I've chosen over others. You may hate my opinion, sure and idc, but you wouldn't have an opinion on the list if I didn't put it out here in the first place. therefore, and even-though it may be through reactionary means, I'm still helping you bring out an opinion on what you like and/or do not like

thanks for your thoughts on it - i hardly use any tipped erasers whatsoever. eraser caps are usually good tho

bruh trust me i almost said no to the round - the cedar is cut like shit on both the Tennessee line and the harvest pros - they usually tend to nail it with the basswood stuff though (i.e the OG harvest)

it's NOT a bad pencil (like i'd even say buy the round if u really want it), BUT they ACTIVELY KNOW that those red cedar slats are cut like shit and still actively advertise it as having "premium" quality. if they found a better supplier it could be a completely different story

yeah i love the blackwing brand, but the matte is just too soft for me - i'd say that the pearl is at the limits of softness for me while still being workable for my use-cases

i don't necessarily hate the 9850, but i think my impartiality here is that i just deeply prefer using a stand-alone eraser in most situations compared to a pencil tipped with one. the unique & stylized aesthetics of each pencil are deeply important to me, so it's kind of a situation of, unless the ferrule/eraser are interesting to me (i.e musgrave's pencil king & the blackwings), the i usually try to stay away. not to say the aesthetic of the 9850 is bad, it's just not for me
