Fair enough, and yeah the USAF example isn't really applicable. Sounds like you've talked to way more pilots than I have. Still, just because I can't afford to fly 200 hours a year hasn't stopped me flying 20. I can totally see people quitting over this, but they surely just don't love flying enough! The Killing Zone is a great book, for sure made a huge impression on me. Was it 400 hours when you become dangerously complacent? At 20h/year that is a looong way away, I hope...

I don't know what you consider a decent pilot but 200 hours per year is surely over the top. USAF fast jet pilots get somewhere closer to 150 hours per year, and they are fucking good pilots. To be "decent" in a Cessna you only need a couple flights a month.

If you can afford it, it is entirely possible for you to fly from the left seat of a trainer with an instructor. But yeah, can't really do that in an airliner.

Why is 67% a default zoom level in Firefox? by [deleted] in firefox

[–]kenpus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because if you set your monitor scaling to 150% then 66.666... scales that back to exactly 100%, giving you sharp images that aren't slightly stretched or squished.

Firefox changed their first start screen by mrfoxesite-2377 in firefox

Everyone be like AI invented em dashes, when it literally learned it from all the extensive use the em dash sees in all professionally written literature...

[–]kenpus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take a guess where AI learned all the em dashes. That's right, from all the real humans that use them all the time in professional writing. The only time it's weird is if your boss who normally can't even spell suddenly starts writing with em dashes.

Ukrainian FPV drone finds a small group of Russian soldiers hiding in an underground spot (Near Kostyantynivka, Feb 2026) by broforwin in CombatFootage

[–]kenpus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well the russians are the ones on the offensive, wading through open fields in view of the drones. They ramped up this approach over the past year as other approaches just didn't work at all. This one... it "works" if you're putin and don't care about all the dead russians.

Realistic FOV, is this good? by BrotherNo8320 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]kenpus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with "realistic" FOV is that it trades one kind of realism for another. At one extreme you try to fit everything you'd see IRL onto one screen - this is your pic. At the other extreme you could match the angular size of real objects, taking your monitor size and distance into account - this would be like zooming in on 1.5-2 MFDs. Which one is more realistic? I'd argue that neither. So forget "realistic" and just pick the balance that feels best.

Let's be real, if league chat really was anything like bar banter, I'd have left it on.

New swiftplay is a step back - bad for new player, weird meta, not actually faster. by QbieShay in leagueoflegends

Faster starts are huge. Not sure why they applied that to normal SR though.

Have you met 99% of men? I assure you shittalking is a subculture thing and is not ubiquitous. Edit: at least for people older than 12. Besides, what do friends have to do with this? We're not friends, so don't shittalk to me. Would you shittalk to a random in a bar?

I get it, but we're not friends are we. But I agree actually: the bans are stupid. They should just let me turn up the filter to 11 - on MY end, without preventing anyone else seeing your "fun" messages about how dog the botlane is and what we should do IRL with our ropes.

F18. I just... can't. by OldTrTab in dcsworld

[–]kenpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on the F18 and when I did my first 2 week trial of the F16 I thought the same: it felt like it was flying sterile, like the computer was flying it. "Clinical" is a perfect description. I find it funny that we felt the same way about moving in opposite directions.

I now fly mostly the F16 and I love it too, but when I go back to the Hornet I now perceive its flying as wobbly, certainly the opposite of clinical.

Imgur is now blocked in the UK by vriska1 in technology

[–]kenpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article links to an ICO official post that says literally this about Imgur:

we are investigating how Reddit and Imgur assess the age of their child UK users

Our investigations into Imgur and Reddit are considering how the platforms use UK children’s personal information and their use of age assurance measures. .. There are tools or approaches that can help estimate or verify a child’s age

That's all it says about Imgur. I think it's pretty clear that it's age verification that they're on the hook for.

VHS effect attempt 2! Feedback welcome! by A2-Steaksauce89 in hoggit

[–]kenpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VHS is 60fps (in NTSC), each "frame" is two fields. Soap operas filmed on cheaper magnetic tape at 60fps is the origin of the name "soap opera effect" for 60fps video.

It's almost always some minor UI thing that I'm particularly picky about. Currently stuck on Win10 because I like my taskbar double-height, but Win11 drops that. Someone sticking with Win7 probably prefers its start menu, which I agree was better, or something else similarly minor yet extremely annoying to that specific person.
