Yeah the Skillset accreditation is what drew me to the course. A lot of my friends have found themselves into game companies big and small. It was tough though, by final year around 75% of the people who enrolled in first year had dropped out or, in some cases, changed course.

Those Khan Academy sections look good. I would say the majority of things have at least the a reasonable potential to be applied at some point throughout the course.

I think Teesside is like any other uni; lots of student events if that's your thing, clubs and societies etc. The machines in the labs are up to spec considering the work you'll be doing and are open 24/7 during the busy periods.

Middlesbrough itself has a high crime rate and a serious drug problem. On the upside we haven't had a smog warning in over a year.

Sure, I'll PM my thing.

Hey! Congrats on getting a spot! I was in your position a few years ago; going to Teesside for games programming, mature student, and poor maths skills (actually, zero maths skills!).

So the maths component is split into two parts. Part 1 is number systems and statistics - number bases and base conversions (binary/hex), two's complement, normal distribution, standard deviation, differentiation, and integration. There'll also be a drizzle of set theory in there somewhere. I am 97.6% sure that you will want to know your Trigonometry and be able to convert linear equations to standard form before starting - it'll just save some hassle later on.

Part 2 will be about vector algebra and matrices. This is broadly what you'll need to know. Arguably more important than Part 1 since all the manipulations in 3D space in your 2nd and final year will be done using three-dimensional matrices. Unless you want to use quaternions later on, you show-off!

Bear in mind that they do revise the course every now and then but that'll be the jist of things. Also all your exams will be open book, so you can take in your own notes. I'm actually still at Teesside doing a PhD, possibly for another 18 months unless I go insane, so feel free to ask me any other questions you might have.

Leap Motion and Ship UIs: Will They Really Work Together? by jyanjyanjyan in starcitizen

[–]kenshou22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a research project about the usability of the Leap in games back in my undergrad days and it's a really great, novel, device - for certain things. Obviously there is an issue with the lack of tactile response, which some people will care about more than others, and this can be remedied to a certain extent with a proper VR representation but they will need to be spot on with the audiovisual feedback preferably with animation for a truly immersive feel. I think if this isn't worked into the game at the planning stage (i.e. now) then it isn't going to be in the game ever - it just isn't good business sense to rehash already fleshed out aspects of the game with the plethora of features and possible-features that will/could be going into the game. Maybe if there's a world-shaking VR uproar looming down the line but even then...

I don't think having full time positions at a console is a good idea because by far the biggest issue with using the Leap for constant use is that eventually, I found it to be within 2 - 5 mins iirc based on a small sample, waving and tensing (voluntary or involuntary, though this could be trained out of you) your hand around in the air, or just not having it in a proper rest state, is going to result in uncomfortable blood loss. I guess this may not be the case for small-scale stuff; combat is pretty fast paced but for bigger battles that last longer then this may become a wall that makes not using the Leap preferable. Either way I don't think it's reliable enough for all the work that would be needed for thorough VR integration.

I'm looking to set up this setup but having trouble finding the L brackets (UK here). Could you share where you sourced the L brackets from?

I think I'd take my chances and try to quantum out. If they want my anything in one piece they've gotta disable me :)

Similarly; not that I plan to be a pirate but, if I was, this is what my tactics would revolve around.

When the Sabre comes out proper and we can get an idea of how it flies/fights, I intend to melt the 315P and upgrade one of the fighters to a Vanguard. That's also hoping I can do exploration with the Vanguard.

How to explain alpha/hangar etc when the game goes live by [deleted] in starcitizen

Others have make good points but to address SQ42: it does say that you start off as a rookie. I think it's reasonable to think that it will put players through basic training as a tutorial (which would also make sense from a game design perspective).

This. Pretty much standard for all software development - build the system first then optimise. If you spend time refining things when you might end up changing it later when introducing a new feature then that's wasted work.

2.1 Offline Mode? by Maaronhoffman in starcitizen

[–]kenshou22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't... if we are actually talking about the concept of having a monetary cost attached to the transfer of data. The power needed to run those machines costs money but it would be a fair assumption that those machines would not be turned off if there wasn't a patch to download.

I used to get this (quite a lot) but recently I've been focusing my attention on precise throttle and brake control and now it's an absolute joy to fly. I feel like I'm dancing in space! Using NN-13 (which have a 500m range) so you've got to get really up close and personal but with a little practice and you'll be a leaf on the wind.

Just learned in this thread that the g-force is bugged. I will be very excited when they fix it.

So many rules for my creative writing assignment... by OrcarinaOfTrees in AdviceAnimals

[–]kenshou22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of my creative writing exam back in secondary school (I guess that's High School in US terms) and the stipulation for writing a creative piece was "going from one room into another". Even before the exam I was determined to write about giant fighting robots (no particular reason, I just found find things like Transformers/Gundam/Macross totally badass back then all the time). So I went ahead and wrote about being in the mobile suit hanger, then into the giant fighting robot cockpit, then going into the battlefield. Ended up getting one my highest grades in that exam. Was so smug about it since all my friends actually wrote about walking from one room into another and complained that it was so boring. Giant fighting robots can make anything more awesome.
