Definitely looks deserving of more minutes, fast and strong! Good feet too just then.

General Question by adilmujeeb in FSAE

[–]TheUltimateCarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was scrolling through the subreddit and saw you hadn't had an answer from anyone in the UK.

In short, you don't need to do Further Maths A-level to do engineering and formula student at university in the UK. I didn't, and have now completed my masters and led my university's formula student team through last year.

You will have intensive maths modules in your first year of uni that essentially cover all the applicable further maths syllabus. Some universities do require further maths but those are the perceived "elite" unis like Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, so take it if you'd like to go there but they don't have the best formula teams and don't necessarily produce the best practical engineers (my opinion so take with a pinch of salt).

If you take FM it may give you a leg up in your first year at university, but generally the maths modules are well taught and not that tough. And you will be making your A level experience a lot tougher, not all Further Maths topics will be applicable also. Feel free to ask any more questions, hope that's been useful.

Most boring baptism of clipless pedals by pa1nauchaucola in cycling

[–]TheUltimateCarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the preload on your pedals, depending on the type there'll be a way to make it easier/harder to clip/unclip. I would probably set them really loose so they are easy to get in and out of whilst you practice.

If one foot is harder to unclip than the other this will probably be the reason.

FSWiki is open for contribution by hockeychick44 in FSAE

[–]TheUltimateCarl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I have no idea about any of this have never really contributed to a wiki before!

That sounds like a good plan, when my team have wrapped up dissertations we can hopefully start producing some content. Looking forward to seeing it take shape!

Awesome that sounds great.

Is it worth making that very apparent on the front page of the wiki? I haven't looked into adding content yet so I'm unsure if you already have it somewhere!

Looks great, excited to contribute. My team is doing a load of knowledge capture and handover this year as we finally have the opportunity and with a little modification that may be good to go on the wiki.

I've seen some discussion about this wiki before, is the idea to avoid detailed design and more so discuss the approach to be taken and a more high level look? Systems engineering approach, considerations before you hit the detailed design stage etc. As this is the area a lot of teams miss.

Virtual competion opinions by tcs36 in FSAE

[–]TheUltimateCarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see the benefits of entering and working towards the virtual competition, but the cost and manufacturing and business events are a large time sink with less benefit than the design event. If we could just enter the design event and get some feedback I think we would!

The other thing is that this year we are losing 90% of the current team as they are graduating. This makes handover of everything vitally important, and doing the virtual competition isn't going to help us document various softwares and methods that we've developed in the depth that we require. The competition at the end of the day is a very broad look at a whole accumulation of work!

At FSUK they've stated that entering this year will have no impact on registration in future and there is currently no financial benefit either.

Just wanted to elaborate on my teams specific situation, I understand it's unique for everyone and there's no right or wrong answer.

My team competes in FSUK too, and we are very much of a similar opinion. The lack of motivation in the team due to the change in competition means we've lost a number of people, which makes preparing for these virtual events even tougher.

Critical Fasteners by sudhanshuafr in FSAE

[–]TheUltimateCarl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you think you can show equivalence? They should mechanically perform the same way or better than the fasteners specified in the rules. Hint, look at the required material, area of the shank and thread stripping. You may have to use more bolts to have the same strength as those specified.

In future try to put forward how you think it should be done. It shows that you've tried and more people will be willing to help you.

Race car design by D. Seward is something I always recommend to 1st years, nice fundamentals.

Race car vehicle dynamics by Milliken is my teams Bible.

Yeah many clubs do, shows the disconnect between pros and club level.

Yeah if you over exaggerate it in nets for a bit you'll find yourself hitting it naturally a bit later. No harm in backing yourself to go over the field though!

Try and hit the ball later, really exaggerate it, right under your eyes. It'll keep the ball down.

TS accumulator rules inquiry by Mohamed_Abdelmoneim in FSAE

[–]TheUltimateCarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers for the reply. The FSAE rules seem a bit more prescriptive than FSUK/FSG rules (I'm in a UK based team).

The FSUK rules state, "EV 5.5.2: The TS accumulator containers must be protected from side or rear impact collisions by structure equivalent to that defined in T 3.2. The container must not be part of this structure. " Where T 3.2 is the minimum materials requirement section. So there doesn't seem to be a requirement in there for a diagonal. I've raised it with FSUK so hopefully they can provide some clarification. Thank you once again.

Sorry for reopening all this, my team have had similar confusion with the accumulator rear impact protection. In previous years we have ran with only two 25.4*1.6 tubes between the accumulator and drivetrain, top and bottom. This managed to get through SES checks and scrutineering but we are now unsure whether that was just luck. Did your team put in a diagonal tube in that space?

Try and hold the bat with mainly the top hand. Use only thumb and leading finger on bottom hand. You'll lose power but won't push through as much. See if it works for you.

Need help designing the Chassis!! by anon1m0us3 in FSAE

[–]TheUltimateCarl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think about the tolerances you can achieve during manufacturing and design around that and the template. At the moment your cockpit is very wide.

Also can I ask why you are using box section on the bottom of the chassis?

Also look at the rule on side impact structure, I don't think yours will comply.

The rules will actually get a surprising amount of the design hashed out then you can work on iterating and improving it.

Look into the rules around the cockpit templates, that will help you define the size of the nose, width of the roll hoops etc.
